Title: 4.7.827 build is freezing my pc for 1-3 seconds constantly
Post by: sognim on June 04, 2006, 06:38:18 PM
Hello!
the new update screwed my pc. when freezing started I got worried but i didn't suspected of avast. I manually checked every running process, I ran an exaustive scandisk, I defraged the HD, i ran a virus ( avast! and trendmicro house call) scan, a trojan (lavasoft SE, spydoctor) scan and cleaned my registry (registry booster) and everything was clean. I suspected it was firefox new update because the freezing only happened when I was connected to the internet but it wasn't. So I stoped avast resident protection and the freezing stoped. I unistalled avast, rebooted and no more freezing.

symthoms:
-my pc freezes for 1-3 seconds (no HD activity at all) in intervals of 30-60secs (or more if i'm browsing a lot). only the mouse moves but in slow motion and with the last cursor that was on.
-it's not processor or memory overflow: when memory transactions are at 50% an cpu below 20% it still freezes
-all apps are afected
-clipboard seems allright
-when it freezes while i'm scrolling down a webpage, if i continue i get speaker bips

here goes system/hardware report attached as "repor.txt"

I use XP Pro SP2 Portuguese (original)
all my security tools (avast, ad-aware SE, spydoctor and registry booster) are orignal and latest versions.
This report was made with resident protection running and the system freezing

I also downloaded avast! virus cleaner tool:

avast! Virus Cleaner Tool - version 1.0.209 Unicode

No, the freezing continues. It's not intense as it was with build 4.7.827 but continues...
I'm really don't know what do... does anyone has the same problem? I'm currently with resident protection (on-access) off because i really can't work with it on...
What's wrong?

Just some guesses:
1. Do you have a network card? Are the IP, gateway, DNS settings set to automatic? Are they correct?
2. Isn't it any trouble with the firewall?
3. If you disable all avast (last option in the system tray icon menu), will the problem be solved?

Hi

Yes the IP, gateway, DNS settings are set to automatic and they seem to be correct, but I received a message a few time, that there is a conflict with my IP Adress on the network, because i'am connected to a switch/router with another PC. Is this the source of the problem?

There isn't any trouble with the firewall
And yes when I disable all avast, the problem is solved.

Thank you

What if you only disable the Standard Shield provider? Or pause it?

hi,
I connect to the internet via wireless at college campus, no external network card. The settings are automatic, "let windows manage connection" but everything seems to be ok cause i can use all app like messenger, thunderbird, but anyway:

Endereço físico: 00-16-6F-01-27-6F                 physical adress
Endereço IP: 193.137.154.25                          IP
Máscara de sub-rede: 255.255.255.0              sub-network mask
Gateway predefinido: 193.137.154.254          pre-defined gateway
Servidor DHCP: 193.137.154.254                    DHCP server
Aluguer obtido: 05-06-2006 10:00:12             obtained rental??
Aluguer obtido válido até: 05-06-2006 10:10:12        valid till
Servidores de DNS: 193.137.55.20, 193.137.55.21        DNS servers
Servidor WINS:                                                       WINS server (this is blank but it always is)

I just disable On-access protection and no more freezing.
I have personalised protection in web messaging, P2P, choosing the apps I use. Everything else is normal.
The firewall don't seem to complain.
Thank you for your support.

Is this the source of the problem?
Any hardware conflict or driver missing could generate this problem I suppose...
Control Panel > System > Hardware > Dispositives (or something like that...). Is there any device listed there with a red cross?

Mr. Venom, if you disable WebShield, will the problem disappear?
If you use another browser, will the problem be solved?

And so?
If you check the last scanned item into the provider settings, which are they?
Which file is 'freezing' on scanning?
If you disable WebShield will the freezing disappear? And Standard Shield provider?

I'm getting the same problem. I updated Avast a few days ago to 4.7.827 (home) and ever since I've been getting a few freezes. I then pulled up Windows Task Manager and looked at the processes. Everything seemed normal, but every so often I noticed ashServe.exe consuming around 99% CPU time. Stopping all scanners seems to solve the issue, but I'll do further investigation to see if I can determine which scanner in particular causes the problem.

Computer:
AMD AthlonXP 2500+
1GB Ram
Windows XP SP2 (no apparent driver issues)
Windows Firewall (no others)
ASUS A7N8x (v2) Motherboard
Broadband connection via Ethernet, always on connection.

It's early testing yet, but I disabled the P2P Shield (version 4.7-827) and enabled everything else (the Outlook/Exchange process isn't running), and everything seems to be back to normal. Of course, it could be wishful thinking, but I suspect that's where the problem lies.

Hi all.

I have this problem too.

99% of the time I only have msn messenger, notepad and firefox up.

When the freezing occurs, the avast icon usually spins slower than normal.

Usually most of the time I have 4-5 firefox windows opens and if I shut them all off and reopen firefox, the problem goes away.  But also notice it seems something in one of the firefox displayed windows is causing it as a couple of times, if I shut down one of them while leaving the rest up, it the problem also goes away.

"My" freezing is when starting from hibernation only. During 3 up to 10 seconds.

Isn't it normal? I mean, form hibernate to normal state the computer should take some time to wake up...

P.S. This happens with me every morning  ;D

"My" freezing is when starting from hibernation only. During 3 up to 10 seconds.
I no longer use Hibernation:
One it uses a lot of resources as it saves all open files/programs, etc. to disk, Hiberfil.sys, this file can be very large.
Two, on occasion my system didn't come out of hibernation and I had to reboot, I prefer to use Stand-by, both of which take a little time to get started, which I don't think is down to avast.

Hibernate Turns It Off, but Saves Your State

In the same way, Windows XP helps your computer start faster when you use Hibernate. This feature saves the contents of RAM to your hard disk in compressed form so you can turn your laptop or desktop computer completely off. When you turn on the power, your documents and applications are open just as you left them so you can start work quickly.

Windows XP reduces the time it takes to compress the memory data and save it to your hard disk. The time it takes to resume from hibernation can vary considerably. Newer laptops can resume from hibernation in 20 to 30 seconds, but the actual time depends on how much data was saved in RAM at the time you started hibernation.

Yep I can confirm that disabling P2P Shield resolved the problem.  But obviously now P2P Shield isn't running which is not very satisfactory.

As I've posted some minutes ago, sometimes, it's only necessary to exclude some files (or just one) from the application folder (AND NOT THE DOWNLOADED ONES).
For instance, for emule, you can just exclude onlinesig.dat  ;)

What does the P2P Shield do? Would the Standard Shield work as a substitute when the files are accessed?

What does the P2P Shield do?
It's a dedicated resident to scan downloaded and accessed files of P2P application.

Would the Standard Shield work as a substitute when the files are accessed?
If you use the 'High' sensitivity to the Standard Shield provider, it will do the same  8)

I do not use Stand-by because of the power-consumption.
