Good news everyone,
new stable version 18.1.2326 has just been released.
What's new:
- You can now add multiple files to your Virus Chest at once
- We now better handle opening multiple Avast windows at once
- We've optimized scans of downloaded executable (.exe) files
- We now warn you if you try to shut down Windows during installation to ensure your Avast installation finishes properly
- Avast updates and installations are now more reliable thanks to our new fallback HTTPS server that kicks in if our standard servers are not reachable
- We've added a new Anti-Exploit module for better protection against exploits, shellcode, and other malicious executable files
- Hate being tracked online? Check out the new Avast AntiTrack offer we've added to your Privacy menu (now only in English version)
Fixed:
- Fixed scanning of files in your Virus Chest
- Fixed some problems with the Outlook plugin
- Fixed wrong text in the Recycle Bin context menu
- Fixed the name of the Avast window in the taskbar
- Fixed an annoying bug that minimized games every 30 minutes
How to install:
1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program
2. Or you can download and install from here

Thanks for update. Avast is now again lightweight like before (no second AvastUI.exe).
- There is little bug in Test history - run time - always said "few sec" even my test was 15 min long.
- After each PC restart, scan history is gone.
- Fixed wrong text in the Recycle Bin context menu - now there is no text only icon (blank space where should be text).
-
Not sure how much control over this the Avast team has, but the Windows Security Center showing an exclamation point all because Avast has a program update is a bit annoying. I have it set to manual, which is basically ignore, yet it still reports this info to WSC. A minor complaint, but still.
-
Just did the update using the Off Line Installer .. all went well on the Toshiba Laptop with Window 10 Home 64 Build 1709 .. On my Dell Dimension 8200 running XP PRO SP3 it also went fine, but on first restart it took a while before the tray icon showed up. Will see if that time improves next time. Otherwise all seems good.
-
Auto update very smooth.

I did notice that a lot of sites had logged me out after the update today.

Ok I don't mind being protected on line and all. While I have SecureLine VPN ... after this new update I'd like to know a little more about this Avast AntiTrack Premium add-on now available. Is not VPN enough?

Thanks but no thanks. Would prefer to go through Avast on my computer. This one is in A$. Nice try. Whether I have Avast Secureline VPN going or not I get this frozen white screen when I apply through the Avast program at the PayPal stage. Hold on. I will try to connect through credit card. Let's see.

Updated the Win7 x64 rig via the inbuilt updater a few hours ago. It required 2 reboots before the GUI would load properly (first time I got the "this is embarrassing" message) but it's loading fine now. The behaviour shield also required turning on manually after the first reboot, but it turned on automatically on the second.
A couple of things I have noted since updating:
1. When you run a scan and check the scan history it now says the run time is "a few seconds", when in actual fact the scan I just ran took an hour. So I checked the history of old scans run well before the update today and it appears to have changed them all to only " a few seconds" in the run time field too. A full scan on this tired old rig takes a good few hours. The amount of data tested appears accurate, it's just the run time that's off.
2. Someone in a comment on the main part of this form mentioned their avast tray icon wasn't animating on this updated version. Mine is animating when it is scanning - I'm pretty sure it was broken on the previous version(s) but is working again now.
3. I created a custom scan in the last version after avast! removed the quick scan. I used pretty much the same settings as the old quick scan (taken off a computer I hadn't updated at the time), only I adjusted the sensitivity from low to normal, and I added modules loaded in memory to "scan areas". After this update today I notice avast! has altered my custom scan. Before the update my custom scan was named "My Quick Scan" with no description in the comment field. The name has been changed to "Quick Scan" and a description has been added in the comment field of the settings saying "Performs a scan of the areas on your computer most susceptible to malware infection". I did not add a comment when I created the scan! It also reconfigured the scan back to low sensitivity, and removed the modules loaded from memory option in the "scan areas". I have since adjusted it back to how I had it before the update. It's good if avast! have bought the quick scan back (?), but I think it should have been added as a standalone scan like the full scan, targeted scan, & boot time scans are; rather than altering someone's custom scan.
EDIT - Have now updated Win10 x64 machine via the internal updater - went completely smoothly. No need for second reboot.
1. Same issue on this computer with the run time for scans in the scan history showing "a few seconds", including scans before the update which took about 30mins from memory.
2. Avast tray icon has been fixed and appears to be animating again on this machine too. :)
3. The update has removed the custom scan I created called "My Quick Scan" on this machine too, and replaced it with a "Quick Scan" using avasts default quick scan settings. I have kept this and created my own version of a Quick Scan with slightly tweaked settings. I'm annoyed that avast removed a custom scan but glad to see they've re-thought removing the quick scan. It's a good alternative to the full scan (which I run only once a month or so) and the smart scan, whgich I personally never run because I don't think it's adequate for anything.

I'm not paying an extra $50.00 for that. I pay enough for Avast! Premier on 3 PC's and Avast! SecureLine VPN, and Avast! Mobile Security. I will do without the new addition.

I agree to a point. New hacks available in your area any time now. While Avast and other antivirus programs have secured the portal issue, now hackers are available in your area through your browser. And then again, these antivirus programs are on the alert for browser attacks. It was just a matter of time. Where there is a will there is a way. Now since most new educated youths these days are educated in computers, one sector goes one way towards benefiting from on-line activity, and there are those that go the other way towards benefiting getting your information to their advantage. The more educated we are as a society pertaining the on-line world, the more vulnerable we may become. I am a TRUSTING customer of AVAST ANTI-VIRUS that they have our best interests in mind. I totally rely on them (well not totally) but you get my drift. But of course I draw the line and have some common sense when enough is enough.

Ha Ha the credit card approach worked. Perhaps PayPal is down right now or Avast isn't aligning with PayPal anymore?. Kept hanging up. Anyways. I'll try the product out since Avast isn't God and I'm not Judas Priest or people in the spot light. Perhaps Avast should approach those. I'll be back with new updates in the future and just my opinion.

Well it looks like they have changed the way it used to work, it never animated when doing an on-demand scan only when on-access scans took place.
With the old version of the animation, some people complained that it didn't work with on-demand scans, it was explained that it was only for on-access scans. Don't ask me for a link to this explanation, it was a long time ago and I'm working from memory.

I just found new bug
Avast tray icon is not so clear also avast tray icon animation is not working

I have avast updates set to automated, but I am usually waiting a couple of days until auto-update kicks in (it usually does after the initial hotfixes are out).
I have set avast to ignore the notifications about updates, but Windows Defender still keeps saying avast needs my attention. It should dismiss the message as soon as it is dismissed in avast.

I've got a second AvastUI.exe running and I never got the part of the update where it asked me if I wanted to install chrome, is that gone now? But how do I get rid of the second AvastUI.exe running? I thought that was gone.

the second process can still appear. If you close the main window there should be just one running (tray icon). The offer of Chrome is not displayed after every update, usually every 90 days or so..

No, you can have both. The technology of Avast Anti-Exploit is kind of similar to Behavioral Shield, but with focus on different characteristics (and different malware behavior). It runs on background and evaluates the processes behavior. It also scans the process for know virus signatures in certain trigger points.
Anyway, if you find some incompatibility with 3rd party products (like Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit), please let us known. Thank you.

Updated without a problem

Wow, I'm late now :-X
Thanks for the release.

Just updated but scan history shows each scan took only a few seconds including the full system scan when it is usually 75 minutes

I used the AIS offline installer to update my 3 laptops. No problem on 2 of them but this Toshiba machine had problems and had to be manually restarted twice. I still have the problem with Behaviour Shield being off on Windows restart as outlined in https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=201143.msg1420062#msg1420062 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=201143.msg1420062#msg1420062).

Maybe time for a clean install. :)

After updating to this latest version of AIS, I ran a Smart Scan, restarted Windows and then ran a Full Scan yesterday. Today, checking the scan history shows "No Scans".

I tried that with the previous versions to no avail. Perhaps it might work with this latest version. The odd thing is that for 3 days or so just before updating, Behaviour Shield was starting on bootup. I'll try a little later.
-
For me on the Free version it was working on the previous version and is working currently on the latest build.

It's working here on 2 of my laptops; just not this third one.

What's different on the one that's having the problem ???
-
Probably his Toshiba Laptop has the AMD CPU .. My Toshiba with an Intel Celeron B830 CPU & my Dell Dimension 8200 with a Pentium 4 both updated fine.
-
The Toshiba that has the problem has an I7 processor, while one of the others has an I5 and the third is an AMD. Other than that all are Win 7 Pro SP1 OS with most of the third party software being the same. All are kept current. Of course, the drivers and maker's software varies. All have 8 GB memory. None are low on hard drive space.
-
I do not know exactly what issue you have with Toshiaa I7 and Avast Free .. But what I would suggest is boot into Safe Mode, run the Avast Uninstall Utility, reboot, download the Full Off Line Installer (on page 1 of this thread) and then do a clean install of Avast .. see if that works. .. If not, then someone here with more experience with these glitches should be able to find a fix.

You don't need to go into SafeMode to run the Avast removal tool. It does it for you once you run it and give it permission to boot into safe mode. :) Clean Install of Avast:

Hi. Thanks for your updated Avast Free Antivirus program. Despite some notable flaws (for instance, as others have mentioned here, reporting that a 40 min scan took only a few seconds, and changing personal scan settings), the updated version seems to run okay for me, with one exception: The usual scan progress message box no longer is displayed. It appeared automatically on Day One (on a same-day basis), after your update was installed and I had reset my custom scan, but it failed to appear at all starting on Day Two. So far, I still have to open then minimize the UI to provide myself with a visual progress report. Is it a known bug? Is a fix expected for this flaw? I'm hopeful. However . . . This particular feature continues to fail, update after update.
Sorry and thanks. Regardless of my rants, I appreciate your work, and your Avast system.

Have to thank you very much for adding HOURS to my work day!
It'll be weeks before I find the last 'setting' I'm used to having in these programs.

Hello,
is there any issue with WiFi Inspector ?
already several (French) users end up with their modem router threatened.
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=215586.0
These modems are the property of the internet access provider and he indicates that the firmware is up to date and without security problems.
Furthermore, everything is OK with WiFi inspector from the old version avast

Sure, the tray icon is only responsible for the GUI.

??? Just updated to new version of avast pro v18.1.2326 and is it me and my imagination or this new v runs much smother, it feels so much lighter on my system. Even thou I have 6950X and 128GB of RAM so if anything takes more resources I wouldn't know much but I I can tell things are much more responsive, now my FF and web browsing responsiveness is blazing fast ;)
Avast team should try to keep it that way from now on, it feels that this is a BIG performance improvement , probably since the good old avast 4...please keep it this way ;)

A known bug.

So are there not supposed to be detailed reports for scans anymore, if there isn't a virus?
-
No, known bug. What you are seeing is a panel in the avast gui saying 'A few seconds' irregardless of the actual scanning time; that is the bug.

Avast Rescue Disk unable to boot. (again).
Gives "Unable to launch main Avast Rescue Disk shell, aswShell.exe!" error box. Clicking OK in box results in system reboot.
Latest vps version for 20180216 installed in both CD and USB versions. ARD worked just fine in version just prior 17.9.2327.
Media search of aswShell.exe not found. Can anyone confirm?

Were you responding to me? I'm asking about detailed reports, which show you files that couldn't be scanned even in the absence of a threat. No sorry, my reply was directed here:

What Bob said.

I think I also found a bug because sometimes when I open scan history avast crashes. I reported this so we will see. Avast IS, windows 10 home 64 bit version 1709. Also when I complete a scan it doesn't show up in scan history. This also looks like a bug.

Avast:
Hi. I posted previously regarding the scan progress message box failing to popup during scheduled custom scans. Since then, I've noticed forum posts reporting that the Avast tray icon isn't working. After seeing these reports, and given I'm not at all sure about the correct jargon or labels, I decided to include a screen snip of the malfunctioning component. The snip of what I usually and awkwardly refer to as the progress indicator or progress message box is attached. To summarize: This component opened on Day One of the 18.1.2326 update, but stopped appearing after that. Now it only appears if I change scan settings, or sometimes if I start the scan manually, and then solely on a same-day basis. The only way I can currently check my custom scan progress is by opening and then minimizing the Avast UI.
Thanks for whatever help you can provide. The snip is attached to this post.

2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

I report, as I already do for the mobile android version the missing Italian translations and possible bugs present in this version
Operating system used: Windows 7 64 bit
Avast Version: 18.1.2326
(https://s9.postimg.org/3ofkcrzaz/History_scan_img.png) (https://postimg.org/image/3ofkcrzaz/) (https://s9.postimg.org/f0s5uk0a3/trash_img.png) (https://postimg.org/image/f0s5uk0a3/)
In the first image I point out the lack of translation into Italian of some phrases.
In the second image, with the 'full trash' by clicking the right mouse button, the avast icon leaves without any word.
I hope this report will reach the avast team for corrections with the next program updates.
Google translate helped me with the translation in english
I apologize in advance in case of error.

Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.
Asyn:
Thanks for responding to my inquiry. Sorry for the delay in responding to you. My laptop system was frozen until late afternoon yesterday, and the Avast forum login site has not been accessible for me until now.
The Control Panel Repair method you suggested was never really successful for me in the past. However, just to be sure, I tried it again yesterday. It not only failed to fix the message box problem, but it also froze during its run, and immobilized my entire laptop system along with it. I've since freed my system, and cleanly removed and reinstalled Avast, which is now up and running. phew. Anyway, with the exception of my recent freeze-out experience, all the usual fix-it methods work for one day (Control Panel repair, resetting the scan, changing random interface settings, manually activating the scheduled scan, reinstalling Avast, etc.), but seem to give up by Day Two. Any other ideas? It's not a crucial problem, but the feature, if fully intact, would be helpful to me.
Thanks again very much for your input. I appreciate your work.

I'm with this gentleman regarding scan history. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there used to be two tabs: THREATS and WARNINGS. You would see the THREAT tab only if you had an infection and WARNINGS tab if had hidden files that could not be read. Mine were Adobe so they were always there. Those tabs are now gone. We were just noting this in addition to the Run Time bug saying a few seconds.

so you would like to see the scheduled scans in popup instead of main UI?

Martin Z:
Hi. Thanks for your response. Answer: No. See, on the first day I run a scheduled custom scan after an update, a message box automatically pops up. The message box shows me how far along the scan is. It indicates the scan's progress in terms of percentage and, I guess as a further visual clue, simultaneously shows scan progress using the moving bar method. I've found this message tool helpful. I can glance at my laptop screen while passing by my desk, see how far my scan has progressed, and thus use my scan-running time to take care of non-desk work, so I'll be all ready for desk work after the scan is completed. Something like that, anyway. Unfortunately, the scan progress indicator, auto-popup message box (or whatever it's called) only works on Day One, but never appears again. I've been able to start it on a same-day basis by changing my UI settings, deleting then rescheduling my custom scan, cleanly removing and reinstalling the latest Avast edition (my process includes clean reinstall method Bob supplied me via link), and other techniques suggested here, but the message box still refuses to appear beyond Day One (except during a previous edition, when it agreed to show itself for three days before withdrawing again). As I stated earlier, the auto-indicator is useful to me, but of course not as valuable as Avast's excellent (and free!) security protection, and its otherwise mostly user-friendly interface, despite some other bugs in the new edition (18.1.2326), as mentioned here and possibly yet to be encountered. ? I don't know why this particular tool continues to malfunction, but I'm hopeful that its failure doesn't much matter -- doesn't indicate other problems elsewhere -- and that it will eventually be fixed. Is it a known bug?
Well, whatever. I'll attach the snip of it again, just in case my vocabulary and overall problem description here is misleading. Sorry. Thanks. Thanks for your work with Avast, for providing and managing this forum, and for your individualized forum input/output. !

After using safemode it now appears to shut down normally in normal mode.

almost a year later the GUI is STILL SUPER slow to load it images when click on task icon to open the program., I know this reported multiple times. is really that hard to fix that? and this is on SSD drive too boot, it much worse on HDD drive we talking 8+ seconds on HDD vs 2-3 seconds on SSD there should be such huge amount delay in show images

Less than 1 second here on a HDD. ???

Yes, we also aren't happy with the opening "speed" and we are currently working on some optimizations that should make it faster in the upcoming 4-6 weeks.

Yes the newest version supports regkey notation. Avast was one of the earliest to set the regkey. The registry information on the right of the snip is there to allow manual insertion or verification of, into the registry.

Win 10 pro 64bit - Outlook 2016
Had the same problem as others, and was a silent reader about the issue until seeing the Beta version 18....... come out.
Have installed the Beta, and it expires now in 12 months2/2019 - my Avast Internet Security expires 7/2019 months later as purchased multi years.
How does this effect the AIS expire date and should both be running at the same time?
My spam icons came back in Outlook 2016 and accepted the addon.
Really surprised that it took this long for Avast to have a "fix" for the Outlook issue

Apply your license to the beta version and it should update its expiration date. :)

will have to uninstall and reinstall prob in order to do that as there isn't a place to update your key.
Also do you have to run both this program and the Avast Internet Security?
Tks

If you have a license file just download it and then double click it to activate.

Firewall "Allowed application" popup did not go away until you click "X" on the upper right corner. This did not happen before this beta...

upgraded today, thought things going okay, then Outlook 2016 froze and wouldn't pull down mail.
Had to reboot - when I did the add-in is gone for Avast Spam. - Tried it again and the same thing. So back to square one, didn't fix the issue. No virus protection for email. - Anyone have any other solution? or another program that will protect email and work with Outlook 2016 Win10 64?

Has anyone tried to use the Avast Rescue Disk created by this version?
When booting from the created disk I get:
“Unable to launch main Avast Rescue Disc shell, aswShell.exe!”
Since 18.1.2326 the disks are created without \RESCUE\SETUP\CRT\INSTALLCRT.EXE.
This could possibly be the problem.

Already reported and acknowledged. To be fixed in the next regular release.

Still no change to the scan time saying a few seconds and then complete deletion of scan history after reboot. I assume this is on the list and we are just waiting?

Correct.

Hi, I don't run Outlook but I haven't heard of any complaints, lately.

This forum melds several editions of Avast Antivirus together: free, pro, IS suite, premier. These release notes do not specify for which editions apply each of the changes. For example, I thought the anti-exploit module was available only in the payware Pro edition. Has it been added to the free edition, too? I've tried several anti-exploit tools and ended getting rid of them. Too much interference resulting in me wasting time to diagnose a problem, whitelist in the anti-exploit tool (if the option is available), or noticing an impact in responsiveness of my computer (not huge but noticeable). Security is nice but not when it interferes with me using my computer. Security and ease-of-use are the antithesis of each other so it should be up to the user to decide their comfort level.
I use the free edition. If the anti-exploit module has now been included in the free edition, can it be disabled? I'll experiment with it but want to know that I can disable it should I find it too intrusive or too much a nuisance.

Here you can compare the different features included in the various versions offered by Avast:

Yes, you can turn it off/on in Troubleshooting.
