Title: windows 10 firewall will not remain disabled
Post by: REDACTED on February 26, 2018, 08:18:04 PM
I allowed my win10 home 64bit to update to 1703 last week. I hesitate to allow updates as MS insists on removing customizations, adds more junk to the system, changes many user settings, and activates many services I don't want running. to put everything back (many times some cannot be restored) takes many hours.

since allowing the update, windows firewall was turned on, I can go into services and disable it (takes several attempts) and stop the service. within 2 hours I start having internet connectivity issues, I look in services and windows firewall has been turned on and its setting back to automatic.

the windows firewall has always been more than problematic since I have clean installed windows 10, but this failure to remain disabled is causing numerous problems.

I'm on Home 1703 64bit, running Avast Internet Security, no other av or security software.

I've tried uninstalling avast, and the windows firewall will block most internet connections, reset windows firewall and everything is blocked including my network. disable windows firewall and all is fine. reinstall avast and all is good too. give it a couple hours and windows will change the firewall to automatic and start it, then all the problems reappear.

isn't Avast supposed to disable the windows firewall and defender?
is there a way to keep windows firewall off permanently or uninstall it?
or should I disable the Avast firewall and try to get the windows firewall to work?

Try this and reboot   >>   https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/Repair-Antivirus

Any change?

thanks for the reply,
repairing avast made no difference, on the reboot windows firewall and defender were both back running.

I'm able to disable the firewall in services, but give it time (usually about an hour) and it changes itself to automatic and starts again, defender is running and cannot be stopped or its startup changed.

is Avast not supposed to disable both?

It's actually Windows 10's security that's supposed to shut itself down when a third party security is installed.
Try the following: Clean Install of Avast:

thanks bob3160,
I did a clean install of Avast, all went well. after the reboot, defender and windows firewall are still running.

I see you are still on 1703, could you check if defender and firewall are disabled on your system.

I believe Bob will be on version 1709 as he is usually an early adopter of windows updates.  This is either an out of date signature or a typo in the signature.

As far as I'm aware Bob also uses the Windows 10 firewall so it should be running.

David is correct. I've updated my information. Sorry my error.
@ vega,
Glad your problem is solved. :)

thanks again,
the problem is not solved, defender and windows firewall are still running. disabling the firewall only lasts an hour or so, then windows resets it to automatic and starts it.

If it is windows then it should also happen to other AV vendors

ok, I"m at a loss. what do you want a screen shot of? I disable the firewall, and in less than an hour it changes to enabled and it starts. at that point I lose all network and internet connectivity until I disable it again, and reboot.

yes, last night.

Has the system been restarted at least once ???
Since I only use the free version of Avast, I really don't have any other suggestions.  :(
