At some point the Avast Hero Browser was installed on my computer without me noticing and I'm not able to uninstall it through any of the traditional routes.
Whether I do it through the control panel or through the AvastHeroUninstall application I get the same message "Failed to retrieve configuration settings. Please check your internet connection." even though there's nothing wrong with my internet connection. following any of the links provided by the program just lead to 404 file not found pages on the avast website.
Any suggestions on how to remove this program?

Clicking the first link listed (with uBlock Origin installed) gives this: https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/30/ (https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/30/)
Hero Browser = Secure Browser
Follow instructions per second link or Pondus' link above.

The browser doesn't seem to be installed as an antivirus component, I checked that first. It's a standalone browser knock off of chrome and a bit of a nuisance.
Following the steps on the second link provided by mchain to uninstall it just repeats the message "Failed to retrieve configuration settings. Please check your internet connection." and the "Download removal tool" link just leads to a 404 page not found.

Try a clean install of Avast. It should also remove everything else. https://goo.gl/4Ptzkf
