You have been working with me for a while about my avast problem
& you have been very very helpful.
But since my computer does not have antivirus software,
I am starting to get worried about leaving it without protection for such a long time.
I would like your feedback as to where I can get a temporary antivirus software that I could use until I can get avast up and running.

Hi olivertwist...
If your looking for free solutions, there is always AntiVir and AVG. Clamwin is also an alternative but it doesn't have a realtime scanner. I would NOT recommend you run them together with Avast as it will cause conflicts.
You can find them here...

Have you tried the solution offered by Tech in your other thread to completely remove avast and reinstall it ?
Something you could install that shouldn't conflict with avast (when you get it working) is Ewido, it comes with a full 14 unrestricted trial which includes resident protection, whilst it isn't a specialist anti-virus solution it is a good trojan/malware hunter. This should give you some time to resolve the problem with avast. Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
If not beware of installing another resident AV as that may cause a conflict when you come to reinstall avast.

need free antivirus :-\

All of the above including Ewido are/have a free version. Ewido provides a fully functional 14 free trial after that you lose the resident elements and it is still free.

AVG, ClamWin, Antivir, BitDefender (free if you want just on-demand scanning).
