Title: AvastUI.exe * 32 always uses 25% of cpu's resources.
Post by: REDACTED on April 06, 2018, 03:31:44 PM
It has occurred since April 6.
AvastUI.exe * 32 always uses 25% of cpu's resources.
I am not running the scan.
It will not fix after reinstalling.
There are no other installed software.
Is there a solution?

This sentence is translated from Japanese to machine.
I am sorry if it is difficult to read.

Hi,
when you see 25% of cpu resource for avastui.exe process, can you please run Task Manager (taskmgr.exe), right click on this process and select "Create dump file"? Please compress this file (e.g. zip/rar or 7zip) and upload it on our ftp (https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/FTP-file-upload). Thanks!

I'm experiencing the same behaviour after updating to program version 18.3.2333. Avast is using up to 30+% CPU time while I have not "instructed" Avast to perform any actions.
I have already tried to repair my installation but that didn't help.
I'm running Windows 10 Pro including Avast Premier including an active subscription.
Any ideas?

Yes, follow pk's (an Avast Team Member) request for information when the CPU % is high.

Any news on this topic?
It is rather annoying as the fan inside my Surface Pro 3 is running at higher speed and thus making noise as a result of the increased 30+% CPU resources.

A Japanese user also reported this issue. I suggested to update Adobe Reader and will report back.

Edit: 4/13 23:27
In his/her case Adobe Reader seems not related. Uninstalling Adobe Reader does not solve his/her issue.

Edit2: 4/14 1:03
A Japanese user having the same issue uploaded dump files to the ftp.

Repairing Adobe Reader XI didn't have any affect.
Removing Adobe Reader XI presents an error in regards to files being in use by Avat Antivirus, see attachment.
As I can't turn Avast off at this point would I like to know how to continue.

Changed Avast to passive mode, rebooted, removed Adobe Reader XI, changed Avast to active mode and rebooted.

Now Avast Antivirus reports to use hardly any CPU resources. However, the CPU usage remains quite high and now Windows installer reports a CPU resource usage of 30%.

This behaviour started after updating Avast to program version 18.3.2333.

Any idea what is causing this strange behaviour?

Hi Non
in your case it seems that there is Datascan thread which consumes CPU. I would try to disable datascan for a while - it might help
Thank you

Hi kwiq, the OP claims there is no way to stop "Datascan" (I believe this refers to "Sensitive Data Scan") because he/she users Free version of Avast, thus no way to stop/uninstall this component.

Avastui.exe grabs close to 100% of my cpu upon booting.

I'm using Avast Free 18.3.2333 on up-to-date XP SP3.

I have zipped AvastUI Minidump.dmp and AvastUI Full Dump.dmp into the folder Dumps of avastui.zip and sent it per PK's instructions to the Avast Team FTP server, incoming directory. The upload was apparently successful.

Thanks, folks...

Hi lanshark4972,
I found 'Dumps of avastui.zip' folder.
It looks like there was DataScan task running in background.
To conffirm it please disable avast self defense for a while and rename  aswDataScan.dll -> aswDataScan.dll.org (C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\aswDataScan.dll) than enable self defense
and restart Avast UI.
Let us know if it helped you.
Thank you

You nailed it, kwiq; thanks! I did what you suggested, rebooted, and that rascal avastui is nowhere to be seen. Moving right along: is there any problem with aswDataScan.dll being disabled?

Yesterday:

You nailed it, kwiq; thanks! I did what you suggested, rebooted, and that rascal avastui is nowhere to be seen. Moving right along: is there any problem with aswDataScan.dll being disabled?

Today:

* AvastUI.exe now runs only 3 seconds or so, then quits with no errors, both at boot and when manually clicked.
* The Avast tray icon then remains but disappears upon mouseover so I have no way to see the UI--if it is running...
* Avastsvc.exe continues to run as a task, but Task Manager shows no cpu usage when I check it.
* AvLaunch.exe does nothing that I can see, and shows as v18.3.3860.0

Questions:

* Is Avast providing me active protection now?
* How do I get to my UI?

Using XP SP3 up-to-date & Avast Free 18.3.3860.316

Hi lanshark4972,
you can always rename aswDataScan.dll back and see if AvastUI.exe runs.
 start  "c:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastUI.exe"  process.

It seems that AvastUI.exe depends on aswDataScan.dll :-(.
I will ask my workmate how to disable datascan and not break UI.
Thank you

Thank you, kwiq; remember that, in spite of the title of this thread, avastui uses just about 100% of my cpu
, so reenabling aswDataScan.dll doesn't seem like a good idea. Let's hope that your workmate is successful.

I gave up because of Avast's slow responses and lack of a timely solution. I removed Avast and went looking for an antivirus solution that wouldn't eat up the cpu on my XP desktop. I tried and passed on several, including Avast's evil twin, AVG. In the end, I selected and am happy with a free cloud-based AV, whose name I won't divulge because, well, that wouldn't be right...

One of my systems is XP Pro SP3 and I have never experienced this excessive CPU usage.  Obviously I have no idea of your installation (what components, other security based applications, etc.) so I can't test it.  My installations are very minimal the basic security shields and no others.

Be careful of cloud AV protection, as in how does it cater for off-line useage.

Has there been a response to this regarding the aswDataScan.dll file?  I too am experiencing 100%CPU usage on a Windows XP SP3 laptop.

Thanks,

Hi LeifW,
there is an option Enable=1 in DataScan section file: C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\avast5.ini
Try to disable self defense and override it to Enable=0
Thank you

I'm interested in why this might effect some XP systems but not others ?

Also, considering AvastUI.exe is meant to be for the control of the UI, why is it apparently (CPU % usage) now involved in a security related function/required file, e.g. the aswDataScan.dll ?
