Title: Avast closes automatically Windows 10
Post by: REDACTED on April 18, 2018, 09:42:15 PM
Hi, I hope someone can help.

I'm using Avast Internet Security on Windows 10 Pro.

The Avast icon in my start menu disappeared a few days ago. If I try and run Avast, it closes automatically after 1-2 seconds. I can't do anything!

I've followed the instructions to repair, do a clean install (using Uninstaller tool in safe mode, installing in offline mode, etc). I even tried just using Avast antivirus free. I've tried sfc /scannow, I still can't get it working.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm stumped, I can't see another solution other than use another antivirus/firewall tool!!

Hi.

Welcome.

You've removed all prior and original manufacturer antivirus programs?  Leftover remnants can/will interfere with new antivirus programs:  https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/11/#artTitle (https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/11/#artTitle)
-Reboot.

Below is only if needed:
-So your desktop shortcut icon disappeared?
-Try creating a new shortcut icon by navigating to here:
-Local Disk (C:) > Program Files > AVAST Software > Avast > Highlight and right-click -AvastUI.exe.  (64-bit)
-For 32-bit machines, substitute Program Files (x86) for Program Files.
-Move mouse to 'Send to' and select 'Desktop (create shortcut)'.  Click this line to create your desktop shortcut.

See:  https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=211973.0 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=211973.0)

Finally, is this a trial version of Avast Internet Security?

Hi.

My current machine has only ever had Avast on it, and it's always worked fine.

The desktop icon is still there, it just closes automatically when I run it, and the notification icon disappears.

I've seen this problem reported by others but the solution (a clean offline install) didn't work for me.

I am trying a trial version of AIS yes, but Avast Free AV caused the same issues.

Thanks.

Hi yes I did say, I followed the clean install instructions exactly, maybe 10 times now!

I actually have the same problem with Avast Free.
The Notification Icon is shown until i hover the mouse over the icon, then it disappears.
Although Avast still seems to be running:

When i try to open Avast (programm, UI) it's shown for a few seconds and then crashes. (Just disappears alongside with the notification icon)

I tried to re-install avast two times now and it didn't work.
Running Windows 10 version 1709 (10.0.16299) lates updates (at least the windows updater doesn't says so ;))

Any help here? I really don't want to switch to Avira Free again ;)

Thanks! :)

@ yaku.mo,
Looking at the icons in your system tray, it doesn't show Avast but does show a problem
with Windows Defender. What error message(s) are you getting ???

yeah, that what i meant, with the notification icon always disappears and is not shown.

The problem within Windows Defender ist just the diabled "Smart Screen" for Windows Apps within the store. though this reminds me to turn it on xD

Thanks again! :)

Hey bob!

First of all: thanks again for your reply, but as i already stated: This didn't change anything.
But still and just this once i did it a third time (as av. i followed the instructions step by step)

The problem is still there: as soon as i launch avast, the UI is there for around 2-3 seconds and then it crashes alongside with the systemtray icon.

:(

Hi can you let me know if you find a solution? My solution has been to go with BitDefender instead as I couldn't get this working no matter what! Thanks.

To me, it still looks like you haven't totally cleared all of Avast or some other AV off your system.

I wasn't using any other AV. I've been using Avast for years.

All of a sudden, it stopped working. I did several cleans, followed the instructions, did fresh offline installation etc, and still same issue. It shouldn't be this hard to run software, Avast never used to have this problem!

Same as the version you've screenshotted it seems.

Is windows defender running when you attempt to install avast?

Is windows defender running when you attempt to install avast?

The Windows Defender Firewall?

I've tried installing it with it on and with it off. I turned it off in services, is there another way?

Then it makes no sense that you're having an issue with installing Avast unless something else is amiss.

Submit the support files following the instructions.

Sorry.  I meant Windows Defender Antivirus.  There is an option to turn that off before you install a third-party antivirus program.

Since you've no other a/v, that should be running atm.

Actually, Windows Defender automatically turns itself off whenever you install a third party AV.

My thinking is that is one of those rare-use cases where it hasn't turned itself off automatically.

Nothing I've ever experienced in hundreds of Avast installations. :)

OK, just tried it again.

Did a clean removal of all other AV, and Avast again. I turned off Windows Defender in every single page that there was. I did a clean install of Avast IS.

Same problem, no luck.

Even Windows Defender settings recognises that Avast Antivirus is installed, and it allows me to run Avast from there, but again closes down within seconds.

So no solution, for a problem that shouldn't happen, to BitDefender I think?

Sometimes malware gets on a machine and the only symptom is a failure of certain security programs and/or microsoft programs to install or run properly or as expected.  This can be because Windows system files have been changed/damaged or corrupted.

I'd recommend submitting logs to enable a certified malware expert to ensure your system is clean, and if it is not, remove any infection found.

Have the exact same issue today on laptop after Avast updated. Win10Pro.  Also same issue on second PC. Been using Avast for years.
Avast interface automatically closes after few seconds and icon disappears when mouse place on it. Done several clean uninstalls and reinstalls with no fix. This appears to be an Avast issue as was working until Avast updated.

Same thing with me. AVAST Free, no other AV, Win 10 Pro 64 Bit 1803.

SysTray Icon is visible, when I start AVAST GUI it closes after a few seconds. Systray-icon still there, but hovering with the mouse over it makes it disappear.

I never had any other real-time AV or 3rd party firewall installed. Once every month I ran MBAM, never had any issues.

I tried uninstalling AVAST via safe mode and avastclear.exe and reinstalling -> same symptoms. A scan with MBAM brought no issues, no PUP, no threat, no nothing. So I think I can rule out any malware infection, to me it clearly seems to be an AVAST issue.

I just now have uninstalled AVAST finally and stick to WIN Defender, since the way it is, AVAST is useless.

Has this problem been resolved in the newest program version? Does anybody know?
