I have 128mb of Ram on my desktop (windows 98se)
I now have running avast, zone alarm, and spy sweeper.
To conserve system resources shouldn't I disable them or some of them while playing? (I am not playing online but playing Civ3 from a CD.)

Hi stwils...
Personally, as long as your system is in NO WAY connected to the internet, you could probably get away with shutting down all three. If you are connected to Broadband or DSL, I wouldn't even consider it. ;)
Have you thought about adding more memory?

Thanks, ardvark. I guess I could unplug the cable from my modem.
But short of doing that, could I undo all except the firewall?

Hi stwils...
I wouldn't recommend it but that would be up to you.
Your best option I still think would be to upgrade your RAM.

Upgrade my Ram on my Windows 98se?
I think I will just unplug the cable from the modem. :)
Thanks.

Why not ???
I've noticed a difference on several machines (upgrading from 128 to 256 MB's) running Windows 98SE.
Again, your choice but I have noticed it helps game performance :)

I never disable AV. Only thing that can cause is a bit longer level load time (just second or two). There has never been proved that AVs actually slow down 3D applications (because they don't).

Hi stwils,
Read here what you can do on Win98SE:

The only change that I would make is by adding the folder where the game is stored to the exclusion list on avast!'s Standard Shield.
Now you said you are running it from a CD, so that could slow things down more on your system.
Examples to add to exclusion:
D:\*.* (or whatever drive your CD is)
C:\Program Files\Stupid Game\*.* (or wherever your game files are stored)
That should do just fine.

Excluding the whole CD drive might be dangerous - you never know what CD you'll insert.
Btw, it might be slightly better to use masks like D:\*, instead of D:\*.*
