Title: Failure to Update

I'm new to this forum; please forgive me if this question has already been answered.

I am using the free Avast anti-virus (build 4.7.844, June 2006) on my system (WINXP Pro, SP2 and all critical updates).  For several days now the program has failed to update itself (error message says 'can't select any server for downloading from 0').  Is anyone else experiencing this?  My registration is valid until 06/01/07.

Note: this has happened in the past, and the only solution was to re-install.  I'd like to avoid that if possible.

You can download servers.def from here: http://download1.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def
Save it to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\setup folder
Start the update again.

Using this information, I cured my update problem.  However, the file name in the setup folder is just "servers".  When I used "servers.def", it still would not update.  The procedure that I used, was to go to http://download1.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def
 (http://download1.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def) and hit ctrl a then ctrl c.  This copied all of the text to my clipboard.  I then opened the servers file in the setup folder with notepad, hit ctrl a, which highlighted a bout 8k of blank spaces, then hit crtl v.  This copied my clipboard contents to the file.  I saved and exited.  Works fine now.

Any idea why the file was corrupted?  Thanks for the info.

You need to use the Tools, Folder Options, View and ensure that you have Hidden files and folders displayed and also untick the Hide extensions for known file types, see image.

Corruption can for many reasons, hiccup whilst the file is being updated could corrupt it, but we are seeing more of this update problem lately.

Thanks, I had the "Hide extensions for known file types" checked.  Looks good now.

Windows in its infinite wisdome has that ticked by default  ::) The problem is users are unlikely to know what the known types are.
