I just updated Avast to version 18.6.2349 and now I can't open websites in Firefox and Edge. I can successfully ping sites via Windows command prompt but not via my Internet browser. Current solution to my problem is to disable Avast shield control and everything works again. I'm running Windows 10 with all the latest updates.
Any suggesting?
-
Okay, by messing with the settings I have isolated the problem to the Web Shield component. When I deactivate the Web Shield component everything works again.
-
Is anyone having a similar issue with Google Chrome?

Disabling a scan isn't actually going to solve the issue, this could well be your firewall blocking the Web Shield accessing the web.
What is your firewall ?

I never said it was a final solution. But it was more more preferable to just disable the Web Shield component versus disabling Avast entirely, as a temporary solution. And the problem started right after I had restarted my PC after applying the new update.
As for a firewall, I use the inbuilt in Windows 10.

Programs affected by the Web Shield:
OneDrive
Dropbox
Steam
Thunderbird
TeamViewer
qBittorent
Not affected:
Avast
PowerShell

I have the same problem in my internet. After update 18.6.2349 avast blocking access to DNS.
What's wrong with the avast update?
I use firewall native from Windows 7, but the firewall doesn't the problem.
I disable the web shield for use internet, because web shield is blocking access to DNS

Same problem. I have Windows 7. After updating to 18.6.2349, I am having difficulties accessing Chrome, Avast site, Network & Sharing Center etc. I can only turn computer off manually (force shut-down) and even that takes time. When I log in again, it seems o.k., but this sequence of events has happened twice so far today. I am not computer-savvy. What to do?

Hello,
Thank you all for the reports.
We are looking into the issue.
If possible, could you please provide more details like:
- Your Avast edition (Free, Internet Security, ...)
- The exact error message from the browser (ideally with info about browser version)
- Does the issue appear immediately after enabling Web Shield or is it working for some time and then breaks?
- Does ping of domain work or just ping of IP address?
- Generate support package when the issue appears and send us the ID: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Submit-support-file
- Generate a Wireshark PCAP (https://www.wireshark.org/) with the issue (record and try to browse + specify which URL you tried to visit during the capture) and send us a download link or upload it to our FTP: https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/FTP-file-upload
- Create a dump file of AvastSvc.exe and send us a download link or upload it to our FTP: https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/FTP-file-upload
Thank you,
Filip

Awesome, thank you very much!
We're looking at it right now.

Before dumping try turning OFF Avast self-defense (Settings > Troubleshooting) and File Shield.
You can also try dumping it just from Windows Task Manager.

We have an idea of what is wrong.
To confirm it, could you please check and post file version of these files:
- "C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\aswStreamFilter.dll" (or in your Avast install folder)
- "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\aswStm.sys"
Thank you,
Filip

so, no one from server side really tested this before putting it in update?
makes you wonder if we are facing another "ccleaner" kind of problem. yeah, i am probably exaggerating, but hey i am a scaredy cat.

Updating through the gui (updating over the top of old installation) could fail to update some older files. Also, using web installer can cause issues such as this due to iffy connections.

I find it kinda weird that the language in the aswStreamFilter.dll says Czech when the install language is English ??? Unless this has to do with Avast being a Czech company and nothing with the installation language ;)

Hi citizenkenneth, thank you for your screen. It seems that aswStreamFilter.dll was not updated to new version on your PC and we need to find out why. Can you please export also "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\aswRvrt\Parameters" reg key and upload it to our FTP server? Thank you

Is anyone having a similar issue with Google Chrome?
Yes, laptop got stuck completely. I followed the advice on malwarebytesforum and turned off the real site protection. It works...for now.

Hello,
We have identified the issue as a problem during program update, that left some old Avast stuff there, that should have been updated.
To fix the problem please perform a repair: https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/Repair-Antivirus
Or uninstall and newly re-install your Avast Antivirus.
Permanent fix for the update issue is coming in future version.
Thank you,
Filip

some french users with this issue seem to say repair doesn't work :-\ stream filter stays with v.17.8.3705.0
Or uninstall and newly re-install your Avast Antivirus.
this seems to be the solution waiting the next update :)

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed

If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

users do not need this kind of help that has already been given above
A repair doesn't work !!!
there is no need for a clean installation, a simple re-installation works (according to users), as already proposed by Filip Braun.
Of course the clean installation procedure is generally proposed in the French forum in a post-it topic called "toolbox" (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=201741.0) that I created to help French users (and yes, I spend time helping myself) ,procedure to use only as a last resort, and not at the slightest opportunity.
My intervention was a simple report and not a request for additional help, French users (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=221340.msg1473728#msg1473728) were able to solve their problem with Filip Braun's advice (which I translated) , thanks.

I posted this issue on MWB's forum and then came here. I had this problem after updating Avast on thursday. Currently I have Avast set to not load at startup, so its not on and I have MWB 3's web protection set to off to prevent internet blocking and other window related issues such as the inability to access network diagnosis and event viewer. Another problem I had restarting my PC to finish the update, it hangs, and I have to hit the reset button.
I looked for both files mentioned in this thread and found that along with the updated version the old one is still present.
-
:(
I have same prob. (with Internet Security, Paid Ver)
No internet access. Affects almost all software which access the internet.
WorkAround= Disable BOTH WEB and REALSite components.
The REPAIR* did not help
(*"To fix the problem please perform a repair: https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/Repair-Antivirus

Reluctant to do complete re-install .. because of the work, risks and time-expense involved.
Any easier ideas.?
Stewart.
-
As said before , a repair doesn't work for this issue.
So you haven't choise to wait for new version or re-install it.
obviously no need to do a clean install so work and time-expense ??? 5 minutes ? less than the time for you to post
risk ? aren't you paranoid

My Dell Inspiron 6400 continues to stall after initialing the opening of one program. I think version 18.6.2349 is causing damage beyond Google Chrome.

Several days have passed since the last substantive replies for this problem. I have put in all Avast/M'bytes exclusions. I have uninstalled (clean uninstall) and reinstalled Avast. These did not work. I contacted Avast tech support and was strongly urged to spend money for "advanced diagnostics" (shame!). Are Avast programmers/developers working on this?

Have you tried to totally remove Malwarebytes to see if that clears the problem ???
This would include downloading and running MB-Clean. You can download that tool from
https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/196955-malwarebytes-support-tools/

SUCCESS :)
I did following (using helpful info in earlier posts *)
Downloaded AvastClear.exe and avast_internet_security_setup_offline.exe
Uninstall of Avast Internet Security via Control Panel
Ran AvastClear (went to Safe mode when asked)
Install
Setup
Connected Wifi
Activated ( ie I am using paid version)
Completed setup.
Took a about 60 minutes (mostly: download, reading, checking, documenting, restorePoint and other paranoid behavior <grin>)
A BONUS: Behavior shield now can be switched ON (previously I could not get the ON setting to Stay]
