Title: "We've detected you're using an older version of Chrome"?!
Post by: asparagus on August 24, 2018, 11:51:41 PM
I am an Avast Internet Security user who has also been using Avast SafeZone as default browser of choice for a while now, and I am pretty happy with it. What I would like to know is why in some of my tabs, I am seeing this message at the top of the page, and whether or not I should follow the advice to "Reinstall to stay secure".

I only use Avast SafeZone for my browsing. Before I started using it, I used Firefox. I don't know if I even have Chrome installed any more, it's been so long since I last used it as my browser of choice. So what's this message within Avast SafeZone all about? It seems to be I only started getting it very recently, and specifically when I search for stuff (with the Google search engine). Does this mean whatever browser I think I am using, if I search for stuff with the Google search engine, I'm really using Google Chrome? Because if so, that means my perception of Avast SafeZone as a secure alternative to Chrome and Firefox is just an illusion, doesn't it? In what way does using the Google search engine oblige me to use Google Chrome the browser? Or is the error message misleading?

Hi
Avast Safe Zone has been replace with Avast Secure Browser (ASB). :)

Interesting. A bit odd that Internet Security has not brought this to my attention. It is up to date. But from what I read in the linked topic (thanks for that BTW), Avast Secure Browser is Chrome under the hood and Avast SafeZone was Opera under the hood, not Chrome. So I am still baffled why Avast SafeZone is giving me a message about using an outdated version of Chrome.

How would I replace Avast SafeZone with Avast Secure Browser, were I to decide I wanted to? It seems it doesn't come packaged with Internet Security.

You're welcome.
Avast Secure Browser as stated is a stand alone browser that can be used 'without' Avast being installed. However to access "bank mode" Avast does need to be install for that feature.

Side note, Opera is also based on Chromium.

Yep, there are many more. That's why I prefer FF (escaping monoculture). ;)

I currently have the Avast Secure Browser set as my default  Browsers have always been a user's choice. One person's favorite is not nessesarily another's
