Title: Errors and bugs from last month.
Post by: Martin00 on October 27, 2018, 04:58:56 PM
Hello,

Ive got couple problems. Anyone who knows how to resolve them please post here. Thank you.

1.  Anyone got a solution for retrieving files from the quarantine? It looks like Avast can't do that. I have that problem with all files that got into quarantine for last couple Avast releases. Actually it is better then it used to be - before that the files were just deleted, nothing ended up in quarantine even when Avast said it was.

2.  Why there isn't any option to whitelist everything and Avast just puts them in quarantine without asking? All my settings are set to notify and ask...

3.  How to delete anything from quarantine? Looks like Avast is incapable of doing that.

4.  How to clear Avast quarantine list? I have removed the files manually from HD since there is no way to retrieve them, but they are still on the list.

5.  Why does the taskbar popup message (for starting a scheduled scan for example) is hiding on the right side of the screen? Only few pix line is showing up.

Avast - FIX YOUR SHIT! Its becoming unbearable to see more and more bugs each version with only few of them fixed.

Hi, before we dig deeper here...

- Which Avast..? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
- Which version..?
- OS..? (32/64 Bit..? - which SP/Build..?)
- Other security related software installed..?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast..?

Avast Free v18.7.2354
Win10 x64 Creators Update
No other programs (except build in defender - disabled).
No other AVs - I think I will have to look for one eventually...

1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

From my previous experience that does more bad then good...
And why do I have to do that every time there is a new Avast version? Thats a normal procedure for updating or something?

Well, it might help to fix your issues, but the decision is yours.

Did that. Can't say if the quarantine problems are there yet, but I guess Ill find out soon enough when it will detect something...
Popu messages are still screwed up (check 01.jpg) - this one I have no idea what it was, no trace of the message anywhere (not in notifications).

Also I have noticed that restoring (or saving) settings option doesn't not restore all settings so every time I do the clear up (with every new Avast version) I need to go through all of the settings anyway....

Strange, I can't reproduce it here, wait for one of the guys with W10.

Hi Martin00,
the problem with notification happens only when debug logging is on. (as far as I know)
So try to turn debug logging (Settings>Maintenance>Enable debug logging) off if it helps.

1. Works for me.
2. My settings are also on ask and I get asked, so I can't confirm it.
3. Works for me.
4. Also works for me.

Note, IDP detections aren't fully covered yet, but the devs are working on it.

My settings are setup to always ask.
And answer "works for me" is a typical IT people answer that doesn't say shit.

Bug #6 I forgot about before: Whenever I click on a scan in progress (details in tray) there is a scan complete sound effect even though the scan is still in progress.

Its been two months. How long does it usually take for someone with Windows 10 coming here? @Asyn

Also Avast, please add a freaking exclude option to the Behavior Shield threat found popup. Right now it moves it directly to the quarantine that as mentioned earlier in this topic doesn't allow to recover anything nor delete!

By looking at the changelogs it looks like there are few new features and few fixes (none of which regarding any issue I mentioned in this post) but most of the fixes are for the bugs that were made by the previous beta version. I don't see the point of installing that beta. Especially since more things can be screwed up as usual in beta versions.

Test the file at VT (https://www.virustotal.com) and post the link to the result here.

Well, it was detected by BitDefender engine that on VirusTotal came out clean somehow.
And how did you test it since you are definitely sure?

Usually couple of engines detect Firefox and Chrome insall files aswell. If only couple of engines detect something in a legit application it's 99% FP.

From the file name (ais_res-884.vpx) it seems to be a avast signature update file ?

This contain a ton of virus signatures, no surprise that other AVs detect this ....

Bitdefender on VT doesn't detect it, what do you make of this? I would rather believe the VT one, because that is running settings picked by the AV vendor. Besides Kaspersky, Emsisoft, Eset, Malwarebytes, Microsoft, Trendmicro and every other relevant AV also doesn't detect.

By the way, this. Are you implying that Avast got hacked, because they own CCleaner? If you are, you are wrong, because Piriform was infiltrated before Avast bought them, but the effects got out to light about the time Avast bought them.

Most likely has to do with who has recived latest signature / FP fix

===============================================================
Each antivirus solution present in VirusTotal makes a signature update infrastructure available to VirusTotal. VirusTotal periodically polls this infrastructure (each 15 minutes) in order to see if there is anything new to download. Therefore, if the last update date for new file scans is old it is because the given antivirus vendor has not released any new signatures for VirusTotal.

@Pondus
No, I don't have Bitdefender installed.
I have it with other type of software that scans my system every now and then.

@TheSharku
I have no idea. Though it has been detected by IObit Malware Fighter with BitDefender module.
It might have been picked up by IObit database, I'm not sure since I have them both on. If you want you can install free version (which wont have BitDefender module on).

And you find lots more online if you search

So Avast excuse is to show that someone else is doing (was doing in this case) "worse"?
How is that relevant?

I don't really understand why do you take that detection so seriously... Especially if it is IOBit Malware fighter, it might not actually even be Bitdefender module in reality...
Even if it is the real Bitdefender engine, it really doesn't show much...
I have used IOBit software in the past, it was pretty bad.

This has NOTHING to do with avast, no relation at all

I am the one posting this, not avast.
This is just info about how trustworthy IOBit is, no more no less, use that info as you want

I have used IOBit software in the past, it was pretty bad.

I take everything relating to my PC security seriously. I trust Avast enough not to disable it right now, although it still bothers me.
I have my firewall setup to disallow any connection that is not on the whitelist, IOBit is not on that whitelist, so I dont trust it enough to be on it, as for Avast is has limited internet access, only certain ports.
IOBit does its job, and for me it does it pretty well so far. It has some security features that Avast just doesn't + that extra BitDefender scanner. I also use Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool every few months (didn't run it for a while now).  So that must tell you something about how serious I am about security. 3 AV scanners and a custom firewall settings to disallow everything except trusted apps an certain ports.

Edit: And to be honest I am a bit pissed off about Avast that they don't provide any help for free users except through this forum (if even that), so I'm sorry if I'm being a bit snappy sometimes but that's the reason why (and of course mostly because my issues are still unresolved).

Well, you can never be sure what it exactly sends out or download on its own. No point of risking it if its not necessary.

Yes, a Chinese company with bad reputation probably sends a lot of things back.
