Title: Why does avast free take a long time to startup?
Post by: REDACTED on November 19, 2018, 01:33:36 AM
I have noticed the last couple of months that my avast free takes another 5 to 10 seconds after bootup to appear on the taskbar.  Does that mean I'm not protected until that shows up or what?  Thanks

You mention "my avast free takes another 5 to 10 seconds after bootup to appear on the taskbar."

That is the AvastUI.exe user interface and that doesn't have a direct part to play in your protection.  The AvastSvc.exe is the main avast process and that plus other avast low level drivers load much quicker than what is your access to the user interface.

Avast GUI (your tray icon) allows you to interact with Avast.  So it comes in later.  It does advise you when there is an issue with Avast you should know about.

Imagine if you had to make detection decisions immediately as they happened all at once; this part is done automatically and you cannot see it.  These decisions are done by the low-level drivers DavidR is talking about.  Because of that they are loaded early in the boot process and are unseen.
