Title: Another browser security tool
Post by: polonus on July 21, 2006, 05:23:16 PM
Hi malware fighters,

Link scanner is a tool that can be a nice addition to MacAfeeSiteadvisor or the scandoo.com search engine.

Go here to read about this: http://www.explabs.com/linkscanner/

It is a free security tool that checks websites for hidden dangers like malware and exploits. LinkScanner has been developed by Exploit Prevention Labs and should be competitive with MacAfeeSiteiteAdvisor in the near future. SiteAdvisor, that was acquired by McAfee's, checks searchengine's results for malware etc like Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

LinkScanner works a bit differently by checking continuously the dangers of a website, so it is more up-to-date than MacAfee's tool is. At this time LinkScanner is a handy tool for opening hyperlinks that people get sent through e-mail. "While you have told people not to open them, they do so anyway" says Chris Weltzien.

De checkup that LinkScanner does is not very extended, so phishing sites can be let through at times. They developed the tool that way because it is a known fact that websurfers want to go on after waiting 30 secs. That's why polonus says use in combination with MacAfee's SiteAdvisor or even better next to DrWeb's link-scanner plug-in.

The only problem I see is that you would have to copy the link,
then open up the site paste the link and then wait for the results.
I'd rather bypass the link then go through that much checking.
No website is worth that much to me.... :) :)

Feel the same... Better will be, at least, a browser context menu item  8)

It would be great if they could come up with a simple right click context menu entry. The more hoops people have to jump through the less likely that it will be used.

I feel the same about siteadvisor, I hate its being proactive, scanning everything, this is a real drag with dial-up that I have disabled it. I emailed them about this, they said it was a good idea  and they would pass it to the development team, then they got bought out, rats.
