Title: Unreputable Addon Warning for Imaginary Addon
Post by: JMitch on December 02, 2018, 09:55:45 PM
Just bought a new computer during black Friday and have been steadily reinstalling my programs, extensions, etc. Avast was the second, after Chrome, to be installed. I've had it set up for maybe 4 days now and for the last 3 Avast has popped up a warning about direputable addons.

I only have 4 addons. When the warning appears, I click Resolve and it finishes immediately with no information, details, or obvious changes. All my addons are still in place & enabled, both before and after the "Resolution".

Google brought me here with many links to people with similar issues, only one of which seemed to be solved (they had an actual bad addon). People have pointed to some logs located in either C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report or C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log, but neither exists on my computer, hidden or otherwise. There is a log.dll, but it is gibberish when opened.

I've used Avast since 2013, but was forced to uninstall it for AVG last year when an update broke it entirely (another reported issue no one could resolve). While it seems to be running fine this time around, this daily warning has gotten old.

In the meantime, I am going to run a scan and see what, if anything, turns up. Hopefully this doesn't still take 4 hours, given that there is nearly nothing on this PC.

EDIT: Forgot to add - Windows 10 Home 64 bit; Avast Free, standard
Also, WOW are these CAPTCHA ridiculous! It's next to impossible to post!
Even the audio option is terrible!

Smart Scan thankfully only took a couple minutes.
Ok'd my browser addons with NO warnings, so there is something contradictory going on within this program.

I feel like there used to be a Scan Log option in the UI once-upon-a-time, but the whole thing got an overhaul a few years ago, so who knows at this point. This is yet again another feature people ask for in their posts, but just gets redirected & ignored.

The only issues it DID find are a network vulnerability (doesn't like my wifi and tries to sell me AvastVPN) and performance issues (recommends disabling my audio and bluetooth! lol, then of course tries to push Premium so Avast can do it for me...)

Captchas only for the first 3 posts so you are almost out of the woods (Spam protection)
If you plan to stay with the free version than only install what's part of the free version. :)

That's great to hear, especially since the audio option didn't work at all this time!  :)

Any ideas about the addon warning?

A screenshot of the warning would be helpful.

Identical to the one here:

Three other people with the same problem... just in that one thread.

Also, unrelated, I never stay logged into this site, even though Remember Me is checked. Amazing.

So did you check the log files to see what was found ???
If you clean your browser history and cookies, that would explain your sign=in problem.

Like I said in my first post, there are no logs on my computer except for logs.dll which is unreadable.

I do not/have not cleaned my cookies or history; it is only the Avast site not staying logged in. Other sites are working properly.

In any case, the error did not reappear this morning, so I am hesitantly hoping the issue is gone.

PROBLEM NOT SOLVED

It has returned/resumed, again after NO additions, updates, etc.

Screenshots attached of the only screens it ever shows. Notice the lack of details or additional information.
All that is ever clicked are Resolve & Finish.

Which version of Avast ???
I suspect that maybe the warning is coming from Avast Cleanup which is a paid product.
Unless you intend to pay for it I suggest you remove it
Menu > Settings > Components > Performance and then select to remove Cleanup.

Like it says in the very first post, I am using the current, up-to-date, free version only. No extras, addons, etc.
There is nothing to remove, unless I were to uninstall Avast completely.
When I follow your direction to remove Cleanup, there is no option to do so. I see Install Component for other things, but Cleanup only has a description and nothing else.

THIS PROBLEM IS STILL NOT SOLVED - NO CHANGES

I have tried REMOVING ALL addons & extentions, but Avast STILL pops up the "Disreputable Addon" warning every other restart.

And as much as I appreciate the replies, it'd be great to hear from someone other than bob3160... who doesn't seem to have the best reading comprehension.
No offense, bob3160, but most of our interactions are unrelated to the problem or me spelling out info that's already posted here.

I suggest you to remove avast completely using this link:https://www.avast.com/en-in/uninstall-utility (https://www.avast.com/en-in/uninstall-utility)
Next you can download and reinstall(Use custom install and select minimal protection) from here:

Maybe Browser Cleanup is main culprit.

Online installers (recommended):

Uninstalled, restarted, reinstalled, and restarted again.
No warning so far, but we'll see in a couple days!
I'll either report back in a week or so if it doesn't reappear, or immediately when it does.
