What is a good free anti-malware product to use in conjunction with Avast on a slow WinXP machine?
I want something which scans for ad-ware, ransom-ware and suchlike which are not really viruses.
Would Malwarebytes be a good choice?

Malwarebytes is certainly not light on system resources.
For my money, you already get everything from Avast.

I thought Avast offers only anti-virus protection. Do the file and web shields in my Avast 10.4 also detect malware (such as adware, ransom ware, etc) ?

Dont get so hanged up in the name these programs have as they are years old and things have changed a lot
All virus are malware, but all malware are not virus ;)
Malware = Malicious program (virus / trojan / adware / spyware / worms / ransomware /..... )
Avast detect all types of malicious programs
Malwarebytes does not target real virus, it also does not target script / doc / media files
Malwarebytes is certainly not light on system resources.
It is if you use the free version (no realtime protection)
