If you have a paid version you can turn Avast ads off. If not, close it on your own or wait for the timer to close the popup.

They try to get us to install Chrome on avast installation, which many would avoid.  Why would they think that a popup ad would work any better.

What gets me more is what is so good about Chrome, when they aren't doing more to promote the Avast Secure Browser.  No money in that perhaps.

The sense of entitlement by some Avast Free users is out of control. Its a free product and they have to make money somewhere. No ads mean no more Avast Free. Its the users choice and you can choose not to use Avast Free.

^ That is a pretty silly statement. A 'free', if cut down product should tempt, persuade and provide positive incentive to 'upgrade' not the opposite which seems increasingly the case. The "sense of entitlement being out of control in some 'free' AVAST users" is simply the articulation of the reasonable expectation that any software on their computer does the job claimed and doesn't interfere unnecessarily with their use of that device.

AVAST, much as I appreciate and respect their core product, have never understood that last part.

You're entitle to your opinion. :) If you're not happy with Avast, it's your computer. you have the right to change to something else.
I personally have been happy with Avast since 2003. I also understand their desire to try to get you to purchase some of their paid products.
We expect Avast to remain in the forefront in keeping us protected. As far as I know, that takes money.
Avast still makes it possible to remain protected and continue to use their free product.

Should be noted some antivirus providers don't give a free program option:  It's either Trial or Buy.

There are always ads in free products, that's the hook.
The fact remains, Avast is the best "Free" Anti Virus product available ( for protection, reliability) and uses the least amount of  System Resouces of any comparable competitor.
Worth it. ;)

I thought my post would provoke that sort of response but all it was a criticism of the blinkered marketing strategy not the core 'free' product which I still happily use 8+ years' on.

I'd point out that I have promoted its use in the numerous forums I'm signed up to, something which I consider part of the deal when using 'free' software when it does what it is supposed to do well.

The value of that sort of promotion can not be gaged of course but it is real and so should not be sneered at. Happy users are the best sales force there is in any field of business.

Do you really think that without that occasional nudge to purchase, those using the free version, would ever even consider spending money ???

Yes, if the paid for product had additional features you want which are worth it. That it is just less intrusive is not an additional feature you should have to pay for.

How likely is it that if an user of the 'free' AVAST version is being significantly annoyed by the unnecessary third party and self-promotion pop-ups they would think to grab their wallet and shell out for the 'full' version?

When you decide to start paying directly for a particular type of software the world is your oyster. Thinking that you would actually choose a product from the same company whose marketing techniques via their 'free' version have effectively bullied you into making that decision is what does not make any sense.

I don't know what you consider bullying? An occasion popup certainly isn't any big deal. If you're getting more than that,
maybe it's time to check your settings and your installation.

There really has to be a balance and marketing doesn't seem to have that balance right.

I don't believe many would complain if there were the occasional popup, but it becoming much more frequent could have the reverse effect. Too much push from one side meets resistance from the other side.

Much of what I see people getting hot and bothered about are the popups resulting from your use of the computer, Avast looking over your shoulder to serve up ads.  Gaining or taking advantage of their privileged position, being installed on the users system.  Even if you have a minimal installation without components that they are pushing in the ads.

^ That is pretty much what I meant, getting the balance right. I see nothing wrong with AVAST telling you at boot via a tray icon message that everything is up to date, working and, if they must, include some sort of discrete promotional content for things like CCleaner, the full AVAST version or even third party 'partners' at the same time. That would be an acceptable extension of what it did/does anyway.

But once booted AVAST should shut the hell up and do its job quietly, effectively, reliably so you can forget it is even there but know it is still providing good protection. No unnecessary pop-ups, a good GUI with as much opt in user control over everything as possible and everyone is happy. Yay!
