Title: Avast Causing Email Server Interruptions
Post by: tryorktr on December 26, 2018, 05:05:43 AM
I have just solved a perplexing problem, and the Avast Mail Shield was the apparent cause.
Since Friday, Outlook 2003 on this Windows 7 computer received the Server Interruption message after 27 emails came in. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook several times with the same result; the server interruption message after 27 emails came in. I then installed Thunderbird, and it too stalled after the same 27 emails. Meanwhile, Thunderbird on two other computers worked fine. As those computers are set up to keep the accumulated mail on the server, there was still email to be downloaded if I could just fix this Windows 7 computer.
So I defeated the Avast Mail Shield, and down came 142 accumulated emails in my Outlook! I'm guessing that Avast times out the email server connection after some interval, which may be OK if you have only a few emails in the hopper. That's no good for me, especially when we have returned from a trip and there are hundreds.
So there you go...
Just defeat the Mail Shield until is is properly repaired. I may uninstall the component if it switches back on automatically.
It is not a big deal; I am quite careful about incoming email. Avast  has never been able to filter out those fake messages from my "bank" which try to get my information, afterall...
