Title: avast android app doesn't update
Post by: sarah2000 on December 27, 2018, 08:13:37 AM
I bought my first android phone today (I got fed up with Apple). I have avast on my laptop (which is running Windows 10), and I wanted to have the same antivirus on my samsung phone. I installed the app, but when I try to "update the virus definitions", it doesn't work. I always get an error message. Any ideas/solutions?

Exactly the same problem here... the last virus definition update was the 13th of December.

@haggisfarmer2 that's cool! But I'm assumming that you stopped getting the updates temporarily and now you have them back. In my case, I installed the app and never got a single update due to a "vps download error".

Any ideas?

Hi, there has been a VPS update issue, the team is working on a fix, coming soon. The definitions are actually up-to-date, but with a wrong date.

Hi Tereza,

Thank you for getting back to me!

I have a question: Will the fix to the "VPS update error" be part of a "new version" of the Avast app or will it be an "invisible fix" that we can't check on the Play Store?

I'm asking this because I installed another antivirus due to the VPS problem that Avast currently has. However, I love Avast and I will certainly install it again when its VPS issue is fixed, and it's important to know if there will be any way to confirm that the issue has been solved.

Actually both :) By releasing new “heavy” VPS, users will download VPS with proper date and it will fix it for them for a few days. But, in the new app version, we will fix the issue in general, so even updating “light” VPS will set proper VPS date and the bug will not appear.

I am also suffering this problem - I am on android Samsung Galaxy S8 and am unable to get updates or seemingly able to connect to get the updates.
When are we going to get a fix for this issue?

Do Avast realise this Date issue may be affecting more of the Avast software - because when I initially tried to log-in to this forum with the standard security challenge, part of which is answering which year this is and upon replying 2019 - this answer was NOT accepted! so I typed in 2018 instead and I was allowed to post to this forum! clearly that is wrong.....so come on Avast is there a bigger issue going on that you are not telling us about?

Dear Tereza,

Thank you very much for letting me know.

I'm a little paranoid when it comes to online security, and to be honest, "heavy VPS to solve the problem for a few days" still sounds like a broken app to me (No offense). I prefer to wait for the new version of the app.

In the meantime, I will continue to use the other antivirus that I currently have on my phone, and every week I will keep checking the Play Store to see if the new version has arrived. When the new version is available, I will definitely uninstall this antivirus and I will try Avast again.

I look forward to getting the new Avast version soon! Thank you for your time and consideration to my messages!

@Calum10: Thanks for pointing this out, I will try to reach the forum admin to have a look at it. But technically, the forum has very nothing in common with the actual app or other products, so I can assure you there is no big issue going on.

@sarah2000: I believe the VPS with correct date was applied yesterday, which means the definitions are not only up-do-date, but also show correct date. The new version will only make sure it doesn't happen again, but let me repeat that the definitions have been up-to-date (and users fully protected) all the time. New version coming soon, looking forward to having you back then ;)

The Information you provided is Wrong! The Update Issue REMAINS UNRESOLVED! I have literally just checked today at 11.36 and there is no update and the Response taken from the App's log says "Virus definitions update failed Downloading of VPS Failed "
Please correct your statement/information and advise when/if this security issue is actually fixed.

If it says “failed” it is a different issue. Most likely, network connection. Log might actually say this because update is done fairly often and sometimes it fails. Can you share what is the latest VPS you have?

The Virus Definition is 181226-04 (17 Dec 2018) and I have no problem with my internet connection, if there is a connection issue, it is at the avast end.

It means there is another problem we need to investigate.
Could you please create a bugreport (instructions on https://goo.gl/FVt9nX) and send it to me by email?
Thanks.

Bug Report Sent as per instructions.

I do not understand how the issue I raise is any different from that which all others have been raising through this entire thread - Namely the VPS issue which has corrupted the date/software within either the app or the software which updates the app describe it as you may.....the issue is the same.

@Tereza V. - Your last message motivated me to try Avast before the new update of the app is available, but the "VPS download error" was still there. I was using wi-fi (I was literally in front of my router, in the same room, and on the same desk :) ). My internet service was 100% active and had no problem.

Every time I tried to update the Avast app, The "VPS download error. Check your internet connection" message popped up, but my Internet was working fine on my phone, laptop, and desktop. The virus definition that the app had when I installed it was the same it had in December, that is: Virus Definition from November 22nd 2018.

I uninstalled Avast and I will continue to use the other antivirus until the new version of Avast is available. I hope the new version doesn't have this annoying bug. It's so frustrating!

Thanks,

Sarah

One more thing:

The Avast version that is on my Android phone's Play Store says "Updated: December 6th 2018", and it weighs 21.46 MB. However, when I check the Play Store on a Windows computer, the Avast version says "Updated: December 17th 2018", and it weighs 28 MB. Maybe this has something to do with the regional distribuition of the App, but I'm sharing this in case it is useful.

This Avast app from December 6th 2018 (which is the only one I can get) has definitions from November 22nd 2018, and all it does is showing the "VPS download error" when trying to update manually.

Also, the screenshots that @Calum10 shared reflect the same problem I have. There is no way to update the app's virus definitions.

Same Problem with the "VPS download error. Check your internet connection" message popup since dec 20 2018.
I use avast since many, many years, but this is really annoying and I will uninstall avast if there is no fix in sight soon!

Thanks for all the details, have been forwarded to the team.

The "Update failed" in the Activity Log can mean that the VPS was updated like an hour ago and you do have the latest version - the updates are really frequent and some of them may fail. But the most important is the VPS version number - that is actually the date when your virus definition were updated.

So back to the screenshot - although you can see "(17 Dec 2018)", the VPS number 181226-04 actually means the last VPS update was on 26 Dec 2018. We keep working on it, thanks for your patience.

@Calum10 a question from the team - have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the app?

@Tereza V. - What about my situation? Every time I installed the Avast app, the definitions were from November 22nd 2018.

Does Avast want all users from my part of the world to think that the definitions were updated yesterday?  ::)

@sarah2000: What is the number of the virus definition version? (the number before the date in brackets)
Title: Re: avast android app doesn't update

@Tereza V. - Well, that was tedious. I had to uninstall my current antivirus, installed the broken Avast app to take screenshots (If you tell me how to attach images on this forum,  I'll send them to you), then I uninstalled Avast and installed the other antivirus. I think I should be getting paid by Avast at this point. By the way, this is the last feedback I'm giving you guys. At this point, I feel like the other antivirus is doing a good job.

The Avast version that is on my Play Store is version 6.15.1, which was updated on December 6th 2018, and weighs 21.46 MB. However, the version that is available on the Play Store when viewed from my computer is version 6.15.1, which was updated on December 17th 2018, and weighs 28 MB. I understand this might be caused by the regional distribution or availability of the app.

The version of the app that I am able to download from my phone is version 6.15.1 (which was updated on December 6th 2018, and weighs 21.46 MB). The virus definition is 181122-00 (22 Nov. 2018).

My family and I have all uninstalled Avast, because it went from being a great app to be a broke and useless app.

I hope this feedback helps, and I'm about to give up.

@Tereza V. - I wanted to ask you if I will get a response from Avast regarding the problem with the app (VPS download error) or if I should just wait for the next version. I provided you with the information you asked me for, but you didn't get back to me.

Hi sarah, we have been collecting data from users (like you), not providing them with any replies or further instructions at this stage.
I've just checked the roadmap and the latest plan says the bug will be fixed for version 6.17 (release date TBA).

@Tereza V. - I see. Well, I'll wait for the new version of Avast for Android. I really hope that the "VPS download error" is fixed. For me, this is the first time that this awesome app has such a horrible problem.
