Like the subject says. My CPU keeps taking up 50% of my CPU no matter what I do. I've tried repairing, reinstalling, restarting my PC. Many things. But nothing is working. It insists on hogging 50% of my CPU. Any help would be nice.

Have you done a Clean Install of Avast:

I have experienced an avast spike on CPU use, but we need more information on your system.
Operating System including build number/SP version ?
What avast version are you using avast Free/Pro/AIS/Premier, etc. ?
The Avast version 18.8.2356 being the latest regular release.
Do you have any additional security software installed (if so what) ?

I'm using Windows 10 (Version 1803)
Avast Free (Version 18.8.2356)
And I have no other security program.

This was most commonly seen on XP systems, on XP I had to go back to avast! free 18.5.2342 as changes in avast 18.6.xxxx caused this problem after some time the AvastSvc.exe was using 50% or slightly more.
Even if there was no other activity and or I had shut down other running programs, the CPU didn't fall back and a reboot was the only option.
I haven't experienced this on my win10 system.
I would suggest following Bobs suggestion for doing a clean reinstall.

After removing everything to do with Avast and uninstalling it, a fresh install did the trick! My CPU is now back to normal. Thanks for your help, everyone!

You're welcome, happy that all is back to normal.
