Title: Action settings in 19.1.2360
Post by: rocksteady on January 05, 2019, 05:39:40 PM
On updating to v19.1.2360 (free) today on Win10 1809, I have taken time to review my Settings.
I am a bit nervous of the default automatic: Repair > Virus Chest > Delete File option, although recognise it is safest except in case of a false positive. I therefore have 2 questions regarding action Settings.

1. Settings/Virus Scans.
“perform automatic actions during this scan.”
What happens if this selection is left unchecked and a nasty is found during the scan?

2. Settings/Core Shields.
“Select what action to be performed…
(*)Ask ”
What happens if a nasty is found. i.e. what options are presented to the user?
(i.e. menu of actions that can be chosen).

Working with the previous version/s actions.

1.  If you don't select “perform automatic actions during this scan.” then when the scan completes you should get your Scan Information and you should be able select actions for individual or all detections.

2.  "Ask" essentially gives you the usual actions on detection, the only real difference is that you select which rather than it occurring automatically (again according to the settings, default or user selected).

I have only ever selected Ask from my very first installation almost 15 years ago.

in v19 some of the action settings options have been reduced.
It is now no longer possible to limit automatic actions to just Repair OR> Move to Virus Chest OR> Nothing (i.e. Don't Delete).

So much for making things configurable.

This was one of the major things that drew me to Avast in the first place (almost 15 years ago), this really is a backward step.

If there are limits imposed on what Automatic allows, then I would suggest don't use Automatic actions and have the first option set to ASK as I have mentioned.

I think the key words are 'for now.'

It really must have taken more effort to have an option to include using the old settings.  Is this option too remain for any length of time, I rather think not.

So are these settings going to be included in the new UI, that we will have to wait and see if we end up with dumbed down, lack of configuration of avast. This is what made avast unique from other AVs when I started using avast almost 15 years ago.

Some of the advanced settings will return in GA (geek area) later on.

I think old settings are really good nothing to change.... :)
Avast should retain the old settings with new GUI.

It would appear to me that this new UI has arrived too soon. If it isn't ready why push it out and have to resort to using the troubleshooting section and bolt on the Open old settings.

I know you can't answer for avast on that, it just doesn't look polished when it is incomplete.

Settings/Protection do not appear in the old settings available in Troubleshooting, unless I have missed something.

@Be Secure.
I trust your pictures are from earlier version of Avast. I can't find these old white bacground settings screens in 19.1.2360 via Troubleshooting or elsewhere.

@Be Secure.
Ah Thanks. Eventually Found the (old) Action settings I was wanting.
Have to use the individual component "Customise" links.
