Title: High CPU After 191.2360 Update
Post by: nhoeller on January 14, 2019, 05:37:34 PM
I am running Avast Pro 191.2360 build 191.2142.0 on Windows 10 Home version 1709.  Since the latest update, I am often seeing Avast detection consuming 25% or more of my CPU (4-core processor), causing the laptop to become sluggish.  I can understand if it were during file access but I have seen it continue to consume cycles after the program or file has completed loading, or even after the application is closed.  Disabling the avast! shields does not appear to resolve the high CPU.   can most easily reproduce the problem when using ACDSee (image manager/editor) but have also seen it periodically with Office applications and during browser activity.  Disk activity is typically 1% or less, with avast! disk activity of 0.1 MB/s or less.  So far, I have seen the same problem on two laptops.

I have done a repair of avast! - it seemed to help but only for a day or so.  I will do a clean uninstall/reinstall when I can free up the time.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks, Norbert

I did a clean uninstall - my laptop is once again performing.  I am going to run with Windows Defender for a while before re-installing avast! - I need to catch up on the backlog of work first.

Thanks, Norbert

I am also seeing a similar problem with the latest version of internet security and Win7, avast UI is regularly hogging an entire core and causing general lag across entire system as a result.
No other AV installed on my machine, and as of now am back to running version 18.8.2356 without problem.
Have tried clean install a couple of times, removed Microsoft Security Essentials entirely and disable Windows Defender.

Hi nhoeller,
to find which component is responsible for such huge CPU usage we would need to capture performance log.

1) download windows performance toolkit  (windows 7 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3138 ) - just install performance tools xperf !
2) Run cmd line as admin and type : xperf.exe -on DiagEasy+DISPATCHER+Profile -stackwalk profile+CSwitch+ReadyThread -start user -on 72AA3505-D4D6-4527-A088-92534DA1082C   (xperf is usually located at c:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\(Sdk number)\Windows Performance Toolkit\xperf.exe)
3) Wait for CPU peak
4) xperf.exe -stop user -stop -d xperf_merged.etl
5) Upload as nhoeller_1_2019_xperf_merged.etl file to avast ftp  (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming)

Thank you for report !
