Dear All
After using Avast free for a number of years, I was going to get the paid for version - BUT - for months now, the GUI hasn't been loading into the notification area at startup. I know this has been thrashed to death in many posts, but having used avastclear in safe mode and the offline install, I'm getting no further towards resolving this.
As a fudge, I put a shortcut to Avast UI in my startup folder, so on every boot the user interface opens and I simply close it again.
I'm on Win10 64.
At NO point to I get any error messages, so my problem (although it may be related) is not exactly as described here:
https://support.avast.com/en-gb/article/Troubleshoot-Antivirus-UI-Failed-load . I have gone through all of the fault finding steps there also.
So to re-cap :
The icon for the Avast does not appear in my notification area automatically after boot up.
It only appears there if I either manually run AvastUI.exe or if I have a short cut to that in my startup folder.
My Program version is: 191.2360 (build 19.1.4142.454)
Virus Def's 190201-6
Number of definitions 5,374,921
UI version 1.0.326
Please can anyone offer a guaranteed fix? ;) ;) :) :)
I can provide as much system info as reasonably practicable ....

Are you hiding the icons in the sys tray or are you showing all icons ???
What operating system and version ???
-
Hi bob
For some reason I wasn't notified of your reply :-(
I'm on widows 10 x64 and the icon isn't hidden in the sys tray.
Having received an update notification today, that said it had fixed the UI fault, I used avastclear in safe mode and then re installed avast free.
The icon is still missing from the sys tray :-(
Thanks.

A screenshot of your system tray may be helpful.

Hi Bob
There's nothing to see apart from other items that I would expect to see in the Sys tray (Notification Area).
I've worked in control system support all my life and am a very competent user - but not a programmer.
If you have a specific path you are following with this, than I am happy to work with you, but can see no benefit from showing the contents of my notification area, other than to show that the Avast icon is missing.
As an interim, I have a shortcut to AvastUI.exe in my startup folder so that the UI opens at startup, rather than remaining 'hidden' other from it's presence in the Sys tray.
Avast does actually appear in the list where you 'select which items appear in the notification area' and the radio button for Avast is set to on.
Thanks for your reply :-)

Have you tried repair and reboot?
Repairing Avast Antivirus

Hi
Thanks for asking, yes I've done that several times along with using Avastclear in safe mode and then reinstalling. None of these actions helped.

If you want there are some diagnostic logs you could post?
I can then notify a log expert. He fixes lots of stuff from those logs but no guaranty
-
Thanks Pondus!
I'm happy to post logs if I know where to find them ;)
Where are they located?
I guess I would need to remove the AvastUI shortcut from my startup folder, re start and then post the most recent log.....

See here >> https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=194892.0
scroll down to step #2 Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Follow instructions and attach the two diagnostics logs here in next reply
How to attach is also in the guide

That's a hell of a lot of my system information to post in a public forum! IS all of it required? :-\

What is Avast status now?
-
Hi Sass
Well that's an improvement!!! ;D ;D ;D - You're an absolute star!!!
Avast now loads into the notification area, but the UI then opens on the desktop. The UI now als shows that I'm using the Beta which it didn't before :) (I had opted for Beta previosly).
The attached 'system restore' notification appeared on 1st re boot.
I also note that 3 other items re appeared in the notification area - I hadn't realised they were missing! ::) ;D ;D.
So is there a next step to prevent the UI from opening on Boot?
Is it also possible for you to try to explain the process behind the fix?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
-
There was configured group policy which prevented loading startup items including Avast tray icon. As for loading Avast GUI on startup that should not happen. Does it after each restart?
-
Goodness knows how that happened!
I've re booted three times and the GUI appeared on each occasion.
If I look in Task Manager/Startup I see that 'Avast AntiVirus' and 'AVLaunch Component' are enabled. Is that correct?
Thanks again :-)
-
I've disabled Avast Antivirus (which points to AvastUI.exe) in Task Manager/Startup and now as well as your fix which lead to avast appearing in the sys tray, the avast UI no longer opens automatically :)
I hope that is an acceptable thing to do -
What do you think Sass?
-
UI shouldn't appear on boot but anyway that would be everything.

Hello. I have the same problem. I updated to the new Avast version (19.3.2369) and it does not seem to work at all. No icon on System Tray and when i try to scan a file by pressing right mouse buttom, a Windows message appears: "Avast UI.exe process is not running. First execute the application before scanning". Could you help me please? I attach FRST log file. Thanks.
-
Can you reinstall Avast?
-
Thanks for your answer. I did it using the offline installer but nothing changed. I tried to reinstall 2018 version (18.3.2338) and it works properly. So i'm using this version right now.
