Good news everyone!
New stable version 19.3.2369 has just been released.
What's NEW:
We’ve set our VPN free - SecureLine VPN is no longer attached to your antivirus. It’s now a separate product
A safer UEFI - Anti-rootkit scan now protects your UEFI (unified extensible firmware interface)
What we FIXED:
- When installing Avast Ultimate, all products in the bundle will be installed in one go
- Fixed our boot-time scan
- Made sure our UI loads correctly ("white UI" problem)
- Fixed a bug for our users in Russia where Passive Mode sometimes turned on for no reason
How to install:
1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program
2. Or you can download and install from here
Online installers (recommended):
Free: https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_FREE
Internet Security: https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_IS
Premier: https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_APR
Offline installers:
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_offline.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
We hope you enjoy the new version!

Hi,
Thanks for the new release. Installed over the beta and rebooted. So far so good. I am on Windows 10 insider release 18353 64bit.
On smartscan, I noticed there is no new interface where we see the files being scanned. I am sure it was in the beta of the same version. Am I missing something?

Hi, smart-scan works for me. Try another reboot.

Thanks Asyn for prompt reply but your screenshot still says beta while mine does not anymore.

Ignore it, I'm always on beta channel.

Thanks for the update, but there is a veritable amount of issues.
Firstly, even after 2 restarts and a repair, my Smart Scan UI is still old.
Secondly, when right click scanning a file/folder, the progress pop-up in the lower right corner doesn't appear.
Tertiary, the program doesn't show when it was last updated, and I recall it was supposed to do it after 19.2. (See attached)

Ermm, your screenshot clearly shows the release date (March 11).

It does, but it was supposed to show when the update was installed too, yes?

Only difference would be the modules used, appearance should be the same.

Hi bob,
I had previously installed beta av only (which I think is for free users) and it still showed new smart scan but now I have installed current release over beta and dont see the new smart screen UI anymore.

Critical bug:
If you scan infected file or folder which contain infected file in explorer (right click), it opens Avast main window instead test results, that means no detection, everything seems ok, but is not.
Only in test history i can see detected file. Now fixed
Other bugs:
- Version 19.2 not notify me about program update if i have set notify.
- Unistallation not remove Overseer task from task manager, also not remove Overseer.exe from system. (This problem persist since Overseer was added)
- On my one of two PC's after installation (offline installer), GUI was unreadable, there was program code instead real words. (Fixed after PC restart)
Suggestion:
- Add button "Clear test history" directly to test history tab. Now is accessible only trough old settings.
-
My Smartscan looks normal to me, at least looks like it did in 19.2

Hi Patrick2,
yes but it changed in 19.3 beta but does not reflect on 19.3 final release. That is the issue.
Please see screenshot of Bob which I am pasting below.

What we FIXED:
- When installing Avast Ultimate, all products in the bundle will be installed in one go
- Fixed our boot-time scan
- Made sure our UI loads correctly ("white UI" problem)
- Fixed a bug for our users in Russia where Passive Mode sometimes turned on for no reason
forgot to mention the fix on the BSOD messages : UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (aswbidsdriver.sys)
reported Here (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=225338.msg1495340#msg1495340) or Here (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=225096.msg1497324#msg1497324)
It seems to be solved now, my 2 devices work again using VPN.

Just updated to the new version, and now the data shredder does not work correctly. It allows me to select the desired files, but once selected, it just returns to the home screen without completing the task. I've rebooted twice since updating with no luck.

Just logged in to report the same. Tried 'Repair', uninstall/reinstall component, complete clean/reinstall & all the requisite reboots... no joy.

For the first time i actually had to do a clean install of Avast. Works fine after that though.

After installing newest update:
Using avast free edition on W7 HP SP1. avast will NOT LOAD AT ALL. Attached is what comes up when I try to click on avast, which in the tray has a red 'x', "You are not protected." I tried rebooting a few times, and I was able once to repair (no help). Now however when I try to uninstall I get a message that I have to wait, attached that little message too.

after update my browser (firefox) didnt allow me to open any url - wont work.
workaround: disabled web-protection module.
i guess thats a bad workaround and hopefully avast will fix this - its inacceptable and was the reason that i swapped from Kaspersky to avast cause facing same issue with KAV - no issues till this update with this url-probs. after update all sites blocked ...
Please fix this - TY
Edit: i also tried to uninstall/reinstall avast premier - same issues - only work if i disable the web protection

So what all did THIS update break? Is this one a 'safe' update that won't cause BSOD with any VPN? Are any of the old scan options back? Do I need to hold my breath for Avast to not crash my laptop with this one? After the fiasco of the last update and all the bugs that came with it, I'm VERY hesitant to even update my program...
Update: After doing a clean install, this version did fix the BSOD when running another company's VPN. However, it has new bugs. Scheduled scans do not work at all. I have a smart scan set to run at 5am every day and generate a log. So far, for 2 days now, no scan has run at all. It makes me wonder if my program is doing anything.

I solve it by install the forum version instead of Avast support website version.
But now have a new problem, Behavior protection report does not record start and end time of service.

I found a bug with Avast Free 19.3.2369, shields only install, Win 8.1. Previous 19.1.2360 uninstalled & full offline clean install 19.3.2369.
When typing chkdsk c: /f /x in elevated cmd (or powershell), on reboot autochk doesn't run. Confirmed via event viewer boot logs, no wininit executed on boot. Reboot shows press key to abort scanning, then gets to scanning but proceeds directly to windows boot. Never shows "scanning and repairing drive (c): xx% complete." Reverted to 19.1.2360 executes correctly again. Haven't tried 19.2.2364. Initially I though it was probably the March kb4489881 patch...
-
Custom scans do not ummm scan. I have a custom scan set to run a smart scan daily at 5:00am and I clicked the option to generate the report file. This scan has been in place for 2 days. No scans have been completed at all. Am I even protected??? What else did this update break...
Running Windows 8.1 64 bit. Latest version of Avast was a fresh install to rid myself of the BSOD caused from the previous update.
This is getting quite frustrating!!!!!
-
@ smokedawg1281,
If you want to see if avast is protecting you try the following links: All test links trigger real-time avast defenses which automatically protect you.
https://www.amtso.org/security-features-check/ (https://www.amtso.org/security-features-check/)
Use the Desktop solution if you are running a laptop or desktop. None of the 6 tests will harm your system. Report back.
(Some links will take about 15-20 seconds to trigger an active avast block, so give it a little time)
If you would rather not, then do a Repair of Avast followed by a reboot. See attached below: (Click Repair to begin)
-
@mchain
Thank you very much. I'll check those out. Somehow, after deleting the scan and creating a new custom scan, it worked this morning and I got the report afterwards. I'll still check out those links.

Since this update, the following has returned:
It occurs on a random, unexpected basis. Not on every boot.
-
Hi! There is third version with 2 AV launch component in Windows start up. Are you going to fix it?
-
This new version has bricked the Windows ScanDisk program causing it to error off. I have tried it on many Windows 7 PRO Optiplex 3020, 7020, etc machines with both conventional and SSD drives and NONE will run. It took me a while to isolate the program that did it and it is this new Avast Free update.
Just try running ScanDisk and you will see what I mean...
Please fix it. I love Avast and have run it years and recommended it to many many people over the years who are still running it today.
Thanks for a great product!

Since that last update, my Avast Internet Security is down (You are unprotected) and no matter what I try, it says "Loading... This shouldn't take long" (only button available is the exit button). Except it never ends...
I tried to update and repair Avast 3 times by going through the uninstall panel, but nothing will do.
What can I do?

Afraid this version broke my computer (W7 Pro). Started to want to run chkdsk every boot, but failed with the same problem as here: https://forum.avast.com/?topic=174575.0 Have uninstalled Avast and since there are unfixed errors it wanted to chkdsk on first boot, but at least it's running now. As I write this it's only 10% through.
Other symptoms were it went into permanent disc light and I had to force a shutdown (probably the reason for all the errors). Weird thing though, if I ignored the failed chkdsk and let it boot, which it did, the machine seemed to be working fine.
p.s. the machine needed several reboots before it started working properly, without freezes/constant disc light

Ah thanks. I had searched for chkdsk not autochk
-
You're welcome.

I'm seeing that avast has errors in the new version so I have not updated it yet.
First I have windows 7 64bit.
The error that chkdsk that says it does not work affects windows 7 or only windows 8.1 / 10?
If you have errors I almost prefer not to update for now. I've seen others in windows 8.1 go back to the previous version.
How does the latest version of avast free work in windows 7? Chkdsk works, well I read that by uninstalling the behavior shield or something like that. But if I almost wait for it to work as it should.

As I put in the link there is a problem with the https scanner of Avast Free 19.3.2369 in firefox only under windows 7.
In tests with VirtualBox the https scanner worked well under Windows 10 Pro 64bits (at least in that version of 2015).
On the other hand it did not act (nor repairing the installation) on Windows 7 Ultimate of 64bits. Firefox here allows you to download:
https://secure.eicar.org/eicar.com
Thing that under windows 10 with the same firefox avast blocked it.
VirtualBox 6.0 with Windows 10 Pro 64bits (year 2015) https scanner from Avast Free 19.3.2369 in Firefox 66.0.2 works.
https://secure.eicar.org/eicar.com (https://secure.eicar.org/eicar.com) (link blocked in the tests of Windows 10 Pro 64bits (year 2015) with Avast Free 19.3.2369 in Firefox 66.0.2)
VirtualBox 6.0 with Windows 7 Pro 64bits https scanner from Avast Free 19.3.2369 in Firefox 66.0.2 does not work, (allows download)
https://secure.eicar.org/eicar.com (https://secure.eicar.org/eicar.com) (link not blocked in Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits tests with Avast Free 19.3.2369 in Firefox 66.0.2)
The question of the million would be If the https scanner works in Windows 10, because it does not in Windows 7 if it uses the same version free of avast and firefox? It is a very strange thing.

Version 19.3.2369 (build 19.3.4241.445)
I usually don't focus on your program structure, but it caught my eye in the Avast Software Updater that your references to the programs I use on my system are now calling them "apps". This is ridiculous. I update installed programs, not "apps".
I don't know why you have decided to forsake normal computing program terminology for the 'kidsy' / trendy word "apps" that Microsoft seized on also with their W10 offerings. This seems to me to go back to cell phone program terminology and has no place in standard home computer system software components.
Please change your software updater terminology and remove the useless word "apps" and correctly refer to my installed software again as 'Programs'.
-
Agreed. :)
-
Apps belong on smart devices. Programs belong on computers.
Updating Avast on our computer should definitely be a Program update.
-
Yes this could be a long discussion here ;-) we just follow here latest terminology of Microsoft. And they use now "Apps and Features"

Guess, everyone knows what an app is nowadays, so no big issue. As long as you don't name it cupcake or such... ;)

Hello MartinZ,
The "White UI" issue when opening Avast is not fixed for me, and it was supposed to be fixed in version 19.3.
I'm running the latest version of Avast 19.4.2374 on Windows 8.1 (64-bit), with UI version 1.0.360.
Please see the screenshot I attached.
