Hi Ahmer2,

First off, welcome to the forums.  (About the CAPTCHA thing, only for the first 3 posts, SPAM protection.)  (Once you hit 4 you are good to go.)

Looks as if the avast push update of your browser did not take or complete properly.  (You can find current version number via C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Browser\Application\AvastBrowser.exe.  Highlight the executable to see the current version.  Please report back with the version number.)   :)

Be sure to back up your bookmarks before you begin, if you can.  See:  https://duckduckgo.com/?q=how+to+back+up+bookmarks+in+a+chromium+browser&t=ffab&ia=web (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=how+to+back+up+bookmarks+in+a+chromium+browser&t=ffab&ia=web)

Maybe it's time for a clean install of the Secure Browser
Download the installer from here, https://www.avast.com/en-us/secure-browser
Download the Secure Browser Removal tool from here, https://download.avastbrowser.com/avast_secure_browser_uninstall.exe
Save your Bookmarks via the Book Marks Manager if you have custom bookmarks so you can import them when you re-install.
Uninstall Secure Browser via Programs and Features - Reboot
Run the removal tool, reboot, run the installer import your favorites if you saved them.
A video to help with the installation: https://youtu.be/r_VLA0HMLQM
Report back if that's solved the problem or not.

If you really still run W8, update to W8.1 or W10.

My avast secure browser shows white window when its starts, and doesnt show any tabs and then it becomes not responding.

I am receiving the following error in my Windows 7 System log.
DCOM got error "2" attempting to start the service AvastSecureBrowserElevationService with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{620A093F-79D3-4CAB-8CAD-EB1A39A8C0A2}

Then it is immediately followed by the following:
The Avast Secure Browser Elevation Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

Hello.
The same issue with 2 PCs (both win7 x64). After last Avast Secure browser update cannot launch browser- it hangs up with up to 100% CPU usage. Reinstall does not help. The only way is run browser in compatibility mode (winXP SP2 or 3) or switch to another browser.
Title: Re: Avast Secure Browser Working But Do Not Show Display
Post by: ondrejz on April 25, 2019, 01:11:51 PM
Hello,

thanks for reporting the issue. We have already started investigation. Let me summarize what we know about the problem:

- it occurs on Win 7 and Win 8 OS's
- only some users are affected
- browser latest version 73.0
- browser is frozen, no tabs, it is not possible to do anything in it
- in event log there are errors related to Avast Secure Browser Elevation Service
- uninstallation and clean installation does not resolve the issue
- did I miss anything?

We have to find what is unique on affected machines. Please can you help us with investigation?

1) Create dump of the browser process
1 - Run browser
2 - Open Task Manager (right click the windows taskbar -> Start Task Manager)
3 - Search for AvastBrowser.exe (how many processes do you see?)
4 - Right-click the processes and choose "Create Dump File"
5 - Pack all dump files and send it to us (you can attach it to your post)

2) Enable browser debug logging
1 - Open command-line window, locate AvastBrowser.exe file (it is usually in: c:\Program Files (x86)\AVAST Software\Browser\Application\)
2 - Run "AvastBrowser.exe  --enable-logging --v=2"
3 - Close the browser
4 - Go to c:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\AVAST Software\Browser\User Data\ and send us safer_debug.log file

3) Will clean profile help to resolve the problem?

Steps:
1 - Close the browser
2 - Disable Avast Self-Defence in AntiVirus Settings -> Troubleshooting page
3 - Rename the `c:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\AVAST Software\Browser\User Data\` folder to `c:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\AVAST Software\Browser\User Data_BAC\`
4 - Launch the browser - is browser working?

4) Send us user_id

1 - Open Regedit and go to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Avast Software\Browser
2 - send us user_id value data

Thank you very much!

I am running Win 7 and I don't get the blank screen and frozen browser.  I am able to use the browser just fine.  The problem I get is the System log has the Elevation Service error.  The error seems to indicate that the service is looking for a file that does not exist.

I've followed your instructions and got the debug, Id and dump files. How can I send them to you?, since only the debug file is bigger than what is allowed to be attached to the post.
Instruction 3 didn't help. Thanks a lot.

For those, who can reproduce the problem:

Did you try to rename the profile? Did it help? If not please try this:

1) Move the "Extensions" folder to other place so it is not present on this location:
c:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\AVAST Software\Browser\User Data\Default\Extensions

2) Run browser. If the problem persists, move the folder back

Do not forget to disable Avast Self-Defence in AV settings before, thanks!

Apparently this type pf problem has also been reported for the Chrome Browser.
On of the suggestions was to disable Hardware acceleration under the extended settings in the System section.
I've never seen the problem in Chrome but I've also always had hardware acceleration turned off to help speed up the browser.

You are right, this setting is related..

For those who are affected, you can try avoid the problem running the browser in compatibility mode and then disable the setting in the browser. From that time, you can run browser normally.

Turning off Hardware Acceleration in the Browser Settings did not work for me.  I am still getting the error message in the Win 7 System Log about the "Elevation Service."  I suspect the real fix for this is going to be me UNINSTALLING this "secure" browser.

So you still see the blank window after turning HW acc. off and restart of the browser? The error in System log is not so important now.

As indicated by my previous posts on this topic, I have never had a problem with the blank window.  I see the browser just fine.  I am bothered by the System log error because it wouldn't be there if there wasn't something wrong.  I never had this problem before the last update so clearly something was broken.  I consider System Log errors VERY important.  I am running the latest version of Chrome and it doesn't throw System log errors.  If it did I would quit using it too.

It means have some patience.

Yeah, it worked.

However, Bank Mode shows grey window when its starts, and doesnt show any tabs and then it becomes not responding.

Additional  in event log Win 7 there are errors related to Avast Secure Browser Elevation Service.

The problem, alas, is not solved.

The problem with elevation service in system log will be solved too. We know about it. This is a minor issue now - it does not block you in anything.

The bank mode is problem because you cannot change how the browser in bank mode is started :( The only solution will be update to next version.

I haven't been able to use the browser since about April the 20th either. I tried turning off hardware acceleration, and I really have no idea what the ramifications of messing around in there are..... as I started the nVidia program that runs my video card because windross 7 wouldn't let me disable hardware acceleration from the control panel. I had to first add avast secure browser to the list of software it (nVidia) was supporting, then I tried to turn off hardware acceleration, but instead had to turn off about 10 options individually (oh, that program they made really sucks), some of which couldn't be turned off....

That didn't work....

Oh, and, I BARELY stumbled through the process (using computers for 20+ years), I have NO IDEA how my mother could do this... oh, wait, it would have been IMPOSSIBLE.... Welcome to the "world of computers, 2019", STILL unusable by the average person!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, what you recommended worked (I tried windross 7 first, that was a no-go).

Ok, you tried 2 ways, I went straight to windross 2000 and it worked... but, really? I'm supposed to use this in windross 2,000 mode?

So, if I reinstall Avast Secure Browser, I'll lose the history and various other things in there, right? Of what value is that, if it's unreliable? There are IMPORTANT things in there.

Can I reinstall without losing the passwords, bookmarks and a few other things in there, or not?

Thank you evallejo, because until I saw that I should choose windross 2,000, well, I don't know, I was digging through some unforesaken parts of windohs' twisted tangled options sub-sections and bumped into it.

Starting a program that won't start to change an option setting wasn't doing it for me.

I haven't updated wingross 7 for about 8 months, could that have anything to do with it?

I have NO PROBLEM with Mozilla FireFox, Google Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi of which I run all of them at the same time, even until Avast Secure Browser failed on me. I quit all of those browsers including ASB to re-boot my computer which had been running for about 8 days, and all except ASB would start back up again.

Hi,
I've had this problem too since version 73... Windows 7 sp1 x64 and x86 machines.
Installing NET Framework 4.7.2 (kb4054530) solved the problem!
Hope this helps.

No clues.
Have you had this problem since secure browser version 73?

Version 74 is available download it from here: https://www.avast.com/en-us/secure-browser (https://www.avast.com/en-us/secure-browser)
The website still states 73 but the download is version 74.

On my  windows 7 machines, secure browser v73 didn't work. When I updated to v74, it still didn't work.
After installing net framework 4.7.2, secure browser v74 launches.

The browser works fine on my machine.  It all the errors that are getting written to my System log that is my problem.  Something about Elevation Service and Schannel errors.

getting the same issue, using windows 7

If its helpful, it really seems like everything is there in the browser, but for some reason its invisible. Like you can type stuff into the address bar if you can find and click it (though the text is invisible too)

I also clicked and dragged in the middle of it and could see a pic I clicked on that was in the browser.

I've already tried that, still the same.

Yeah, so, it's still NOT working. I re-installed it (from version 73?? to now this version, number 74), but did NOT use the "full uninstall" option. I just removed it using "programs and features" and not removing it's bookmarks and data.

wizzlbang is right. I didn't know it before so I tried and managed to get to yahoo.com, highlighted the text (I never did SEE that text as highlighted), then pasted it into notepad and it was there, readable. You can also "grab" an image, and when you drag it, THEN it appears.

I am using windos(not) 7 pro(vomit)fessional 64 bit and have not updated is for about 8 months.

Avast Secure Browser starts and works if I go to the program, right click, then choose properties + compatibility + tick "run this in compatibility mode for" -->windos(not) server 2008 (service pack 1)<-- and hit apply then okay.

And in true windos(not) form, it doesn't KEEP THAT SETTING the second time I run the program. It goes back to NOT working. I have to repeat the above step.

Someone mentioned installing .net (garbage).... I have "microcrap asp.net mvc 4 runtime" installed... is that it?

I *probably* need to reinstall windross to get rid of this problem. But maybe not. Who the hell knows?

I'm not willing to go through the HORROR!!!!!!!! of reinstalling windross again (although I will probably HAVE TO before they stop supporting it in Jan. 2020).

Anyone want to earn $20 bucks?

Why don't you try a clean install ??? That would include using the removal tool.

Well, I found out how to solve the problem on another website....

And, my browser history is GONE... Precisely why I didn't want to do a clean re-install of avast safe browser. The history wasn't erased from a clean re-install, I didn't need to clean re-install, but rather from just, I guess, all the entries being OLD, fell out of the URL history database.

Obviously, you didn't follow the instructions as outlined in my post.
