Title: Avast Free Preventing Network Connection on Boot
Post by: glasscat33 on May 20, 2019, 08:38:56 PM
Hello

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem. I tried searching the forum but didn't really see a similar situation that fits.

When my laptop first boots up and I log in, it takes ages before I am able to connect to any sites using my web browser (I have tried Firefox, Chrome, Opera). My wifi shows that it is connected, it shows that internet access is available, yet when I open a browser and try to get to my homepage (Google), it comes up saying the site cannot be resolved or DNS not found (the message varies). This is happening on my laptop and my partner's laptop. If I wait about 5 minutes, then I can connect to any website without a problem.

Just as a hunch, I uninstalled Avast and used the built-in Windows Defender and the problem has gone away. I've installed another free antivirus, and the problem does not occur. I reinstall Avast Free and I'm back to having to wait forever to be able to get to any website. This only happens when the machines are first turned on mind you.

Had anyone had a similar experience? Does Avast somehow delay the DNS host from connecting?

Avast Free version: 19.4.2374 (build 19.4.4318.491)
OS: Windows 10 Professional 1809

Which firewall are you using and, is Avast allowed in you firewall settings?

Just the built in Windows firewall. I checked and Avast wasn't listed as one of the allowed apps, so I added every .exe file in the Avast folder, rebooted, and it still has the same issue. It takes forever to be able to get to any website after a fresh boot.

Oddly enough, I was just going to post an update right before I saw your response. My laptop had the version update for Windows 10 to 1903 (May Update). During the course of the update, it prompted me to uninstall Avast in order for the update to proceed. So, I uninstalled it completely, proceeded with the 1903 update, and then reinstalled Avast Free 19.5.2378 (build 19.5.4444.497). Since this process, I haven't had the problem, touch wood, with the network connection on boot. So, hopefully it is fixed! We shall see.
