Title: Avast Omni Beta Testing Begins in US!
Post by: Will0x539 on June 27, 2019, 09:59:46 PM
Hello all!

I would like to introduce you to our latest security innovation, Avast Omni.

Omni is an accumulation of decades of tech and research that has led to our most comprehensive online security solution yet. Avast Omni offers three dimensions of security: first, it protects your home network and all the devices connected to it, second, it secures your mobile phones, computers, and tablets with our most powerful on-device security, and finally, it helps you keep your children safe — both online and off — with parental controls.

More information can be found here:
https://www.avast.com/en-us/omni

We are kicking off a beta program in the United States to help us uncover bugs and improve our product. To partake for free, please download here:
https://bits.avcdn.net/productfamily_ANTIVIRUS/insttype_OMNI/platform_WIN/installertype_ONLINE/build_BETA/cookie_mmm_ava_bet_000_008_a
(Please ensure you are in the United States before downloading)

After installing the application, a compatibility scan will be undertaken to check if you have a compatible router.
If you are compatible, you will be guided through a purchase flow (costing $0), and then be sent the Omni hardware within ~5 days.

We hope you enjoy using the our new product and hope that you provide lots of feedback here on the forum.
We really want to get this right, so please don't hesitate to share your thoughts here or DM me directly.

edit1: If you do not have a compatible router, you will be notified in the desktop app when we do support your router model.
edit2: Avast Omni doesn't support IPv6 as of now and although we're heavily working on that, IPv6 networks will be treated as non-eligible for the initial public launch due to the lack of time to fix that soon enough
edit3: Non-compatible router list added below

Thanks,
Will

The reason for incompatibility will be due to the router you are using. What is your router model? Typically we do not work with mesh networks yet.
Our 'traffic acquisition' methods are limited to work on most, but not all routers.

I will try to find a blacklist for routers that we know do not currently work and share it with you.

Thanks,
Will

Hey Will,

I'm really interested in the Omni so I was ecstatic to see this beta test post. I've bounced between Norton and McAfee for years but today I decided I'd give Avast a real shot. I'm also a pretty avid beta-tester when given the opportunity. Like Bob, my router was found to be incompatible and I was legitimately surprised considering the router that I have.

The router that I have is:

Linksys EA9500 v1.1

It's on the higher price-point-end of the Linksys routers so like I said, I was surprised when it failed. Not that price-point would necessarily have any bearing on compatibility, but being one of the more common brands of consumer routers I figured it'd work fine.

Also, perhaps a whitelist of known-compatible routers might not be a bad idea while it's in the beta phase. I've only had this router for a year but if I understood the post correctly and Avast is sending the hardware appliance out to testers for full testing, I'd be willing to pick up a compatible router as long as one on the list met my network needs here at home.

My router is also not compatible right now. I have satellite internet but the router settings seem the same as any NAT router; maybe it will be supported someday. :)

Hmmm, after reading all the reports, I wonder if any router is compatible (yet). ;)

Hello everyone,

there are two big reasons why you may be treated as non-compatible because we're at the very beginning of evaluating compatibility:

Regarding the first issue we're looking at a way how to bypass this check for you who're willing to help even if we can't assess the router in an automated way.

Regarding the second issue there's not much you can do about it as of now. You may try to disable IPv6 connectivity on your router for the testing purposes and see if that helps.

In the meanwhile, please send both GUID/MIDEX via PM to either me or Will0x539 who raised this thread and one of us will try to investigate your specific case.

Thanks.

Hello everyone,

there are two big reasons why you may be treated as non-compatible because we're at the very beginning of evaluating compatibility:
  • Your router maybe hasn't been properly identified via HNS which limits our current automated processing
  • Avast Omni doesn't support IPv6 as of now and although we're heavily working on that, IPv6 networks will be treated as non-eligible for the initial public launch due to the lack of time to fix that soon enough

Regarding the first issue we're looking at a way how to bypass this check for you who're willing to help even if we can't assess the router in an automated way.

Regarding the second issue there's not much you can do about it as of now. You may try to disable IPv6 connectivity on your router for the testing purposes and see if that helps.

Wanted to post an update for my situation:

Linksys EA9500 is found to be compatible as soon as IPv6 was disabled in the router software. I was able to progress through the rest of the sign-up process with no issues and completed the "purchase" for the Omni appliance. I can't remember if my router came with IPv6 enabled out of the box or if I had done it during the setup, but I'm definitely good with IPv4 alone while we're testing the Omni out.

No problem Will. I'm in the process of deploying the Omni software on the computers and phones in the house. It's a pretty easy process for both PC and Android phones. I'll be installing it on the 2 Macs in the house later today. There is an issue with trying to add my own iPhone under my Profile, but I made a separate topic about that last night. I'll update that post with the results of trying to add my Wife's iPhone to her profile once I create it.

@DavidR,

I installed the Omni Beta to find out whether or not my router was compatible and  the scan I ran showed it was.  I then tried to open the ASB  but it wouldn't open so I uninstalled Omni reinstalled the latest version of Avast then was able to open the ASB.

If your router is compatible, then I would assume that it should work with all traffic going through.

You may however need to set your router not to use IPv6 but use IPv4 as mentioned in other posts, extracts below.

There is no problem running Secure Browser when using Omni provided you aren't blocking it's access with the firewall.
Please don't take this post Off Topic. Start your own post on your Secure Browser problem.

@DavidR,

What does my router have to do with the ASB?

Well you started it by posting about ASB not working in what is the Avast Omni topic. If you have Omni installed and the router is compatible then ASB 'should' work.  Why yours doesn't is beyond me.  As Bob suggests you should post this in the ASB forum.

Annette,

You can get the pairing code from the Avast Omni program on the computer. When you add your phone to your profile there, it will generate the pairing code.

It's very useful/interesting to know that you did not find this intuitive. Can i have some more information on the steps you took? Did you download the family member app onto your phone without instructions from your guardian/admin app to do so?

Thanks!
Will

UPDATE: Got my Omni today!

When I first started it up, it wouldn't go online so i tried flashing back to my TP-Link C2600 stock firmware when it went online but blocked ALL my outbound network traffic.  :( So i did a quick check, and my stock firmware isn't supported.

At that point, i flashed back to OpenWRT, restored my configuration, and did some poking around... long story short, do not disable IPv6 DHCP! It appears the Omni needs it even though it picks up a IPv4 address.

Whats interesting is that while i was on my stock firmware, the Omni broadcasted its MAC for all the entries in the ARP table.  Im assuming this is how the Omni is configured so that it can inspect the network traffic.  While on OpenWRT, I do not see the same behavior.... but my network traffic does get out.

At this point I'm not sure the Omni is actually collecting my network traffic.  :-\

Id be glad to dig into this more but its a bit late and i need to get some Zzzzs in before work.

So even though I'm not seeing it take over the ARP tables, it is working.  So far so good!

It was purely by accident. I had removed OMNI since my router wasn't compatible.
I was working on the license section in the Avast Free UI and when I selected the OMNI license, the program
started to apply that license and upgrade the free version. After the upgrade and restart of the system,
I was greeted with the request to hook up the hardware. :)

@bob3160,
Do you have the ASB installed and if so does it open with Omni installed?  Also, I've forgotten how to get to my router settings.

The answer is yes. For your router, do a google search and include your router make and model in the search.
(Why do you need to get to your router settings?)

When I ran the initial compatibility test, everything working fine, I signed up for the Beta testing, and I received the Omni unit. When I went to install the unit, the compatibility test ran again and now my router is not compatible?  I have an Eero router/booster system throughout the house. Please advise as to the issue with compatibility and if Eero products will work now or when they might work in the future. Thanks.

Since there was a Beta update for the Avast product, us there also an update for Omni Beta?

Something was updated yesterday. I got a notification from the desktop software that said my PC was still protected, but Windows needed to restart. When looking in the update section, only the virus definitions had been updated. They don't usually require a restart though.

Unfortunately, whatever was updated caused my system to crash on restart. It said that Windows couldn't start due to a bad config file and the Automatic Repair function couldn't fix it. I couldn't even boot into safe mode.

Hello HeffeD,
I'm really sorry to hear this. We'd like to help you. Please, could you try restoration again (Some tips: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options)? Or try to reboot to safe mode and uninstall Avast Omni (could be done with Avast Clear). Also, we'll be glad for any diagnostic information - Support package, screenshot etc. Thanks

Hi Zbynek6,

After many tries, I was finally able to get into safe mode and uninstall. I can reinstall and try again. By "support package", what do you mean?

Thanks!

Hello HeffeD,

I'm glad that you were able to solve the issue. Support package - https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Submit-support-file. If you install the Avast Omni again, I'm attaching instruction on how to create and collect a dump - If crashed again, dump will be created and helps us address the issue.

A) Enable Complete memory dump
1. Open  Start > Control Panel > System >
2. Open "Advanced system setting"
3. Open tab "Advanced" - and "Settings" in Startup and recovery section
4. From the Write debugging information drop-down menu, select "Complete memory dump."
5. Check Overwrite any existing file.
6. Click OK.
7. A message about pagefile requirements may appear; if it does, click Yes.
8. Click OK.

B) Reproduce the situation
- pc will be restarted

C) Collect Support package and Dump
- Dump (memory.dmp) will be generated at C:\ or C:\Windows

Hi Chemi,
Unfortunately, you cannot join the beta anymore, because beta testing was closed. Ordering Omni from Mac is also not available, but if you order Avast Omni from Windows platform, you can log in to Omni Companion app on Mac (available at www.avast.com/omni-app).
Thanks

Hi Zbynek6,

I haven't experienced the update crash again, but I have had a crash both times I've run Tor browser in the sandbox. As soon as closing the browser window, the OS crashes. I've submitted a report using the support tool. The file ID is 15UAK.

The submission is after the second crash, because I wanted to make sure I could reproduce the issue.

Thanks!

Hi blackdog47, We are working on increasing compatibility routers every day. Please stay tuned. We are offering the product as an upgrade to our current customers and the current price is always available in the app, before ordering (depends on which product you already have). The hub will be delivered approx. 7 days after placing the order. Thanks, Zbynek

Will there be a difference in the renewal price since at that time you aren't purchasing another hub?
I've had some inquiries but didn't have an answer.

Thanks for the reply but that really doesn't give me any information as to what to tell those with a question.
The original price was announced at $149.99 what is the Special price? Thanks

So I know that Beta testing is "officially" closed, but I also heard that some beta testers will continue being used to gather information.

well here is an opportunity for Avast Omni to increase it's knowledge base.

I am seriously interested in using this solution for for all my connected devices.

my network router:
netgear model # DGND3700
this is a dual band ADSL router hooked up to Centurylink DSL

my process so far:
installed Omni software and ran compatibility test.
states router is not compatible.
I checked my router config IPV6 is not enabled (however not sure about IPV6 DHCP)
after checking router settings I re-ran compatibility test.
again states "not compatible"

However this may mean nothing but doing a network scan it shows all devices correctly connected to my wireless network and they are "secured" so some wireless traffic is being recognized by Omni.

Also at this point I have no way of ordering the Omni Hub.
I would be willing to purchase a subscription and the device to see if we can get this working on my network.

Thank you
Mike
