Title: Private data in BCLTMP
Post by: gb122 on July 08, 2019, 10:43:41 PM
Dear Avast team,

in my Temp folder there is a folder BCLTMP and it contains personal data from my Firefox and Chrome profiles. It is possible that the data in this folder will be updated when Windows starts. It is enough for me that these data can be found in the profile folders of the browsers and I don't want to have them in the Temp folder as well. After a research it seems as if the data from your Avast Antivirus Free is copied there. The problem seems to have been around for several months without you finding a solution. If you really are the originator of this problem, I would like to ask you to find a solution. My privacy is very important to me.

Yours sincerely

Hallo,

C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\Temp\BCLTMP\Firefox\(different Profiles)\webappsstore.sqlite
C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\Temp\BCLTMP\\Chrome\I don't remember the filename
C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\Temp\BCLTMP\Edge\empty

Win 10 Home 64 Bit

Avast 19.6.2383 (Build 19.6.4546.494)

Firefox: 67.0.4 (64-Bit)
Chrome: 75.0.3770.100

I created a batchfile that deleted automatically everything in the Temp folder. Since then it happened only one time again.

Yesterday I updated Avast to the latest Version. Perhaps it is now no more actual.

Thanks

@tosal2.  To make that comment are you Avast staff?
That is not stated in your profile.

Isn't this a missed opportunity for AVAST to promote the use of CCleaner which seems to get rid of such TMP browser files by default?  I certainly do not have anything similar in the location described and I use that at the end of every day so I'm assuming it is one of the things it 'cleans'. I actually have an, empty, AVAST folder there in the Local folder

Even if it does not do that by default and this is something specific to the OP's system/browser version/OS CCleaner has the Settings options to include custom locations like that.

I've just done a bit of research and BCL apparently means Browser Cleanup List and the 'problem' described has been reported at least for the last 5 years including this very forum:-

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=148479.0

There is some really unhelpful advice about this you can find even at otherwise reliable places like the Malwarebytes' and other Anti-Virus forums. But that ^ topic suggests it may simply be a backup copy, made for safety/restore reasons, of your browser profile settings etc made by the AVAST Browser Cleanup Tool.

The obvious method of testing this is to go into the AVAST program features and, assuming it is enabled, disable Browser Cleanup and see if that temporary file disappears.

It would be ironic if it is that which is creating this temporary browser info file backup. The tool is actually compromising the browser user's privacy. Presumably it is meant to be deleted at some point (Shutdown?) but if the file is being created on bootup or when a particular browser is being used it is effectively not temporary.

Today the Folder was again there. The filename for Chrome was Web Data. When I shutdown or restart, my batchfile deletes the Folder. But many hours my system is running without interruption and the Folder appears. I don't know exactly when, because I don't look always in my Temp folder. But it seems not to be at startup, perhaps a little time later.

My Avast Free doesn't have a browser cleanup option and I never used this. The data in my browsers are never been cleaned. Only accidentally by PrivaZer last month, but the Temp files are newer. They are with the lateast date of change, as they are in the browsers folders.
