Title: avast 4.7 home and ezArmor 3.1 issues
Post by: mcc17ss on August 14, 2006, 03:41:37 PM
I am a Road Runner customer and use their ezArmor security package which includes pest patrol, ez antivirus and ez firewall. ez firewall is a clone of zone alarm pro version 5.1.039.004.  I just started using avast 4.7 home and am having occasional pc lockups.  Not sure what to turn on/off in each of the programs to provide a stable environment.  Pls help...

Having two resident AV scanners isn't recommended as they are likely to conflict (and possibly lock-up), toy will need to uninstall the ez-antivirus.

I have turned OFF the mailsafe options in the ez firewall.  I have also turned OFF the resident protections of the ez antivirus.  i have 5 of 7 providers running in avast (no instant messaging &  no outlook/exchange.  i use both Firefox and Thunderbird.  So far (today) things are running fine.  Any other suggestions as i do like the avast program?

Turning off the ez-antivirus isn't enough as they will still have legacy keys in the registry and device drivers and probably services still in the background. You have to uninstall the AV component completely.  Stopping the mailsafe in the ez-firewall should be fine.

I have turned OFF the mailsafe options in the ez firewall.
As David said... this could be a mess.
Services running in background, legacy (low level) drivers loaded... messing is coming  :)
Trust avast and keep it, uninstalling the EZ  ;)
Or keep the EZ and test avast in another computer  ;)

OK, I have decided to uninstall the ez antivirus (for now) and give avast a try for the next 30 days or so.  Part of my rationale is the recent CONSUMER REPORTS review of antivirus software where avast got a good review and ez antivirus did not.  I appreciate the quick responses of the experts on this forum and look forward to using avast for a long time.  FYI, I still have the MAILSAFE options turned OFF in the firewall.  Thanks again.

The mailsafe option in your firewall shouldn't cause anything like the issue with a resident antivirus scanner. I have an Attachments Quarantine function (plug-in) in my firewall Outpost Pro and that is disabled, so I don't believe you would have a problem with that.  These types of plug-in don't have an installed drivers element in the same way as an antivirus.
