Title: Updates reset firewall settings
Post by: diamondpumpkin1 on July 19, 2019, 10:52:01 AM
This is really getting on my nerves and if it isn't fix I'm going else where for protection. I have specific rules for the firewall so I'm not being spied on among other things. Even time the program updates, it resets my settings. Fix this.

Whilst I don't have the avast firewall, there used to be a function to backup settings that I do on occasion used (I don't know if there is a specific option in the firewall settings).  They could then be imported after say a program update.  For the most part my settings had been unchanged in a program update from the UI.

You could try the AvastUI > Settings > General > Troubleshooting - 'Back up your Avast settings' and see if that contains any firewall settings after a program update.

This should backup all your settings including any firewall settings.

Doesn't fix the problem, my settings should never be overwritten in the first place. I have avast set to update automatically, I have no idea when it resets my settings, could go an entire week without noticing.

I agree the settings shouldn't be overwritten, in my personal experience this hasn't happened in my installations of avast free and I don't know why it has in your installation.

Whilst the suggestion to backup your settings doesn't resolve the problem, it sure as hell can save a lot of hassle replacing all of those settings manually.

I will try to draw some attention to this topic.

This is a real problem for anybody that wants to control the information that gets shared. There is no warning that an Avast update has happened overnight and wiped all previous settings. One setting which should absolutely not get changed is the ask/autodecide settings for applications with no rule. How can we get this fixed? I am prepared to find a new internet security suite as well.

Exactly! That does NOT backup your application rules! Every time it updates, I have to readd hundreds of Exes and set them to block. It gets very annoying to do this time and time again

Reported to Avast. Let's see if that helps.

Here is part of Avast's reply to my inquiry,
"We suspect a corrupted or inaccessible rules.xml during the upgrade process, but weren't able to reproduce it yet.
We have a completely rewritten firewall driver, to be released in one of the next version where parts dealing with the xml config files have also been changed."
This isn't going to solve your current problem but hopefully will take care of this problem in the future.
