I'm trying to help a friend set up his new computer. It is all in Spanish with no option for English. He knows less about computers than I know about Spanish. :-) So it has been a challenge.
It is a Compaq running Windows 8.1.
It had McAfee on it and I told him that Avast was so much better. Now I am questioning the validity of that statement.
After I downloaded it, it took almost two hours to run the installation where the little box says to not turn off the computer. Finally, that finished.
Then when I clicked on Status, it says You're Protected but underneath that there's a message that says The Installation of Avast is Finalizing and it shows 45%. I've waited six hours now, and that has not changed.
How do I get it to finish? I think I've waited long enough.
Here's some of the things I've tried.
I uninstalled McAfee and turned off the firewall and rebooted before I installed Avast the first time.
After the problem started, I went into the Control Panel and ran the Repair on Avast. Then rebooted, and tried it again and got the same message.
Then I uninstalled Avast using the Control Panel, rebooted, and Re-installed it. Same problem.
What next? I'm out of ideas.
I'd like to get this computer set up for him so he won't have any problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is all previous used antivirus programs removed according to vendors instuctions?
