Title: Frozen computer from an Avast download.
Post by: sspeedstreet1 on September 03, 2019, 11:54:04 PM
I have an HP Pavilion (Windows 10) that will not boot. I purchased Avast Internet Security. As soon as the payment went through a pop-up appeared showing a download was beginning. Odd, I thought. Said it was "preliminary to program installation" or something like that. I went back to the document I had been working on and noticed Word was really sluggish. There was a "cancel download" on the pop-up, so I did. The computer froze completely. I turned the computer off and restarted. Now it will not advance past the first "HP" logo window.

What was downloaded onto my computer?

Thanks.

There must be someone here who's seen this before?
Unless a random virus unrelated to Avast decided to strike at that moment (unlikely I  think). I really need help here. Please.

I haven't seen it, but then again I only use Avast free and when I install that I use the off-line installation file.
Did you have an existing AV installed when trying to install Avast Internet Security (AIS) ?

I have reported this in the hope of drawing attention to it.

Are you able to boot this system into Safe Mode ?
If so see if you can uninstall AIS.

If you can uninstall it, you could try using the full off-line installation file (but remain connected),  direct download links for the AIS off-line installation file http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_offline.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_offline.exe).

Thanks for the response. Please keep in mind I  didn't install AIS, it started without my permission. Yes, there is anti-virus already on the computer. I had no intention of installing AIS at that time, I was only paying for it.

I just talked to the tech who has my computer. He said the OS is corupted and he has to save the data he can and do a factory reset. I hope he can save the downloads file.

I don't believe you have to actually install it manually having paid for it the prelims would be getting it ready for a full install.

Whilst there could well be some pain if he can't save the downloads folder, it is a time to think about a backup and recovery strategy in the form of Hard Disk imaging software.

Try restarting the computer while depressing the Shift Key.
That should give you options to do a repair.
