Title: Avast 14.2 not updating virus definitions ...
Post by: Dennis46 on October 12, 2019, 12:18:36 AM
Hello,

Since the latest hot fix on Avast 14.2, I have not been able to get a virus definition update.  When I click on update it goes through the update, but always shows 19100902.  Knowing that it's now 191011xx, I would think the virus definition have been updated.  Is this a bug?

Thanks,

Dennis

Still the mess.....What happens ? Is it normal ? Ok there are still minor updates every 3mn but the major one is the 19100902 and we are at 19101306-stream....Still don't understand how it works....

There are streaming updates every 5-10 minutes that do not change the version number but you should still see an update about once a day for the master VPS update

Hi thanks for fast reply. All the question is there.....If I hit the About button I'm still in 19100902.
And in the defs file we can see each day the master VPS like 19101000 remain in stream and it's the same for 19101100, 19101200 and 19101300 now....like on the photo above.

So i don't think it's normal....

Please have a look on the capture of my defs file with my precedent post, you will see what i mean.

I see the same in the About page. Where do I find the definitions files? Tx

In the finder :

- Go/ordinateur/Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Avast/vps9/Defs

Thanks so much!
What I see is one base file 19100902 dated Oct 09 followed by 22 _stream files. My about shows 10100902. Not sure if it is correct in the visual but at least I can see multiple stream files and I assume the stream files disappear when the base file is updated.

Thanks for your reply!

Hi Mac !

So what do you think ?

I've uninstall, re install, I'm with Sierra 10.12.6 which fits perfectly mith my macbook pro mid 2012.
I've tried with a fresh install of Mojave and Catalina on a new partition and Avast 14.2 act the same way....
Tried AVG too but no surprise it's the same...

Ok we have a definition base and continuous stream in parallel to complete, but the def file is on the 09/10, so it's a bit so/so for me, but never had a look before into the details of def file, but with the 13 version I ever had the notification of the definition base upgrade....

So normal because there are just minor upgrade, new behavior of the software or there is a real bug ? That is the question...

AVG is same as avast, just different skin.

Sit tight for now, I’ve reported this to the dev team. They are working on an update for some of the other Catalina items and likely this will be fixed soon along with the other items

Hi guillaumelou,

Thank you for putting the pressure on them to work on my initial request for no virus def updates.  I haven't been getting any answers for some reason so I just checked in to see what was going on.  Looks like you finally got them to report this to the develop team.  Let's hope they get this fixed soon.

Thanks again,

Dennis

Hello,
we know about the issue, we are working on fixing it. Streaming updates are working (the mechanism that we use to push new definitions every few minutes), so you are protected.

Hi,
Is there an update on this this yet?
It's been over a week since I have been able to update definitions which is the limit for my work VPN so I currently can't work!

Any suggestions how I can get my definitions updated?

Hello,

what software your company uses to secure VPN access? Instead of requiring a VPS of certain date, they should check last time a successful check for a new VPS has been performed... sorry, I do not think it is possible to "fake" the vps time. Our team is working hard to push out VPS for Mac, there is no ETA.

Kind regards,

Ok, that doesn't sound good, but I'll ask our admins if that's an option.
Btw, they use F5 kit.
Thanks

Hi, in case you can use other OS, Windows/Android are on VPS 191015-6.

Thanks, but if my admins can't change the policy it'll be easier for me to change AV software then to change OS...
It's just a shame as I had nothing against avast.

OK, I know about their existence but AFAIK we do not have an official supported API for exporting the info; I have no idea where they get the info from the AV. I would suggest calling your tech support and asking them to change the configuration of f5 to be more lenient. I was told it is possible Mac VPS will be released today, but who knows... We apologise for the inconvenience, however this f5 thing is not something we are responsible for.

Just to be clear: paying customers CAN update their product. Our scanning engine downloads VPS updates every few minutes; these are stored in so called streaming updates. Every few days we integrate these updates into a new VPS. Last week we were not able to publish the new VPS, but all our customers are still receiving streaming updates, so their virus definitions are up-to-date.

The only issue is that f5 does not take streaming updates into consideration and thus reports AV as not up to date. We will try to coordinate with them so that in the future this does not happen.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the clarification Ondrej, but all I (as a normal user) can see is the signature version which in mine indicates it's 9 days old now.
I have no option to manually update these (I believe i used to have a separate button for this in an older version if i'm not mistaking) and I've been told that's the reason I can't connect.

Unfortunately, for me it doesn't matter who's at fault here as the result is the same.
Bear in mind I have no control over the platform used at work or over their policies/settings so all I can do is adjust my AV solution so it works for me.

I understand. Please note that if you are using Avast 14.2, on your GUI there is something like "You are up-to-date! Last updated Today at 11:08". That the Virus Definitions number looks like a date is an implementation detail.

Hello,

please note that a new VPS should already be released for Mac! We apologize for issues, which should now be a thing in the past.

Yes it has - I just checked and I am now at 19101806 with a _stream already after that. Thanks for the information and your help on this! I learned alot from this discussion. Happy to be an Avast customer. Just hoping some lost features will be added back in, in future! Take care!

Hi Onderj,

I hate to be a wet blanket here, but it's still not working correctly.  When I update, it gives me the update info and time stamp, but it doesn't change to the correct virus def.  Right now is shows 19101806 on the main UI screen when I click on About.  Today is the 19th so I should be seeing 191019xx.  If I check the streaming, it shows 19101902 as the latest stream.  So, as you can see it's not updating the main UI.  We shouldn't have to go to the Streaming area to make sure we are updated.

Thanks for your help on this, but Avast needs to look deeper into the problem.

Dennis

If I am not mistaken, it was posted earlier that the streaming updates will not update the version number you see in the About page

There are streaming updates every 5-10 minutes that do not change the version number but you should still see an update about once a day for the master VPS update

Correct streaming updates do not update the VPS version, but the main VPS package update does. Historically it was daily, lately that has slowed down and sometimes is daily and sometimes every few days.

The streaming update platform is faster to respond to new threats than the old way of releasing a VPS package. Its also faster to correct an issue like a false positive. As Ondrej noted, its irrelevant the date of the VPS package and more relevant to the date/time of the last update downloaded but coming from a business background I can understand the issue with VPN and NAC/NAP type sensors checking Virus database dates.

I think it would be reasonable to do a VPS update every three days, with streaming updates in between. This should satisfy the strictest enterprise policies.

Hi Onderj,

Just wanted to let you know that as of yesterday 10-21-2019 the UI is now changing to the correct virus def after clicking on Update!

Thanks you for all your work on getting this resolved.  Very much appreciated.

Hi, I'm using avast and having the same problem... It says that is up to date, but when I try to connect to my work vpn fails with this error:
Code: [Select]
[2019-11-29 23:39:03] INFO: Antivirus Virus Definition scan failed
My work use CitrixEndpointAnalysis to check it.

I have this definitions installed:
Code: [Select]
19112602
19112902_stream
19113000_stream

Any suggestion to solve this? is preventing me from working.
