Title: Avast causing Excel to crash or hang
Post by: ko1967 on November 19, 2019, 01:30:59 PM
Using Excel 365 for Windows on occasion, with certain spreadsheets, if the user tries to change the font color of a cell, the background color of a cell, or the table format Excel will crash or hang.  Searching the web for "Excel crashes when changing cell color" and you will find many posts.  What I found (from one of the posts) is that if I disable Avast antivirus the spreadsheet does not crash.  This is a strange one as it doesn't happen to every spreadsheet nor to the same spreadsheet all the time.  Since there is no good way to report bugs I'm posting this here for Avast to fix and others to be aware of.

Hello, would you be so kind as to download Procdump utility (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procdump)
and extract it to some folder (For example C:\Procdump).

Then please try to reproduce the Excel behaviour running it the following way.
Run the Excel application the way you are used to.
Hit "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" -> click on "Task Manager"
If you don't have the expanded view, it is possible to click at the bottom of the "Task manager" window at "More details".
Right click on the "Microsoft Excel" and in the context menu click on "Go to details"
You can see the "Excel.exe" process and in the second column you can see its Process ID number (PID).
Dont close the Task Manager window, it can be used in case of Excel hangs.
Please use this number at the place of <PID> in the following commands.

Run the CMD window as an Administrator. Enter the following commands :
cd C:\Procdump -> Enter
procdump -ma -e 1 <PID> -> Enter
Click "Agree" in the "ProcDump License Agreement" window.

Then please try to reproduce the crash in the Excel.
If it crashes please send us the .dmp file from "C:\Procdump" folder.
If it hangs please use the "Task Manager" window.
Right click on "Excel.exe" process and in context menu click "Create dump file".
"Dumping process" window appears and after some while you can see the path where the dump file is located.
Please send it to us.

Thank you in advance

Hi ko1967,
please zip the dump as ko1967_11_2019.zip and upload it to avast ftp server.
(https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/FTP-file-upload)

In case you will induce a hang you can also use task manager to create a dump  (ctrl + shift + esc) select office app do a right click on it and from menu select create a dump file.
