Title: After a scan....'unable to scan' message
Post by: animal artist on August 24, 2006, 06:45:44 AM
Hi.
I am a newbie to this forum (sorry :))
I have been doing a full scan of my system with the avast home ed as usual and i like to read the reports and have noticed on my last scan that avast was unable to scan any files even thoug the scan took ages.
I am getting worried that I am not getting virus protection.
Any advice?

I believe there's nothing to worry about.
Anyway, you should enlarge the column with the error (using your mouse to drag the column heading) - so that you can see the reason why the files couldn't be scanned.

 :)  Hi :

The 2nd Screenshot has dates from Nov 2005, more than
8 months ago . If there is nothing recent, just click on the
red "X" along the top menu in the "Error" Log .

I'm having the same problem with the pro version. I scanned about 200gb of data and according to my log file about 75% of my files could not be scanned. The only reason stated by Avast was "Access Denied". Also, this was a pre-boot scan which is done at boot time before anything is loaded by windows. I've been in computer repair for 20+ years and all I can say is something ain't right here. I have used just about every AV program ever written and it is normal for them to skip certain protected system files and password protected archives. I thought it may have something to due with winxp's permissions and security but this was during a pre-boot scan which should be before most permissions and security is loaded. I also tried a scan from inside windows and in that scan I'm getting alot of "Cannot scan, file is a decompression bomb". So according to avast about 75-80% of my files(which also include a bunch of Mac OSX images) are decompression bombs. I DON"T THINK SO!!  If I am unable to resolve this I am just going to remove Avast and go with another program. You might want to consider doing the same.

Can you paste a few examples of the filenames, returned the Access denied error? (from the report file)

Strange. What operating system do you use?
What if you copy some of the files (e.g. the C:\Download\Linksys\lne100tx\Ndis\DOS folder) elsewhere?

Just use good old Microsoft Windows XP with SP2 (OEM Version). My download directory is only one of several directories I'm getting the error on so I don't think thats the problem..but what the heck I'll give it a try.

I don't know if this is relavent or not but I was just comparing my avast.ini with the post about understanding the ini and there are 2 issues that may or may not be a problem:

1) ApprovedPerson is not my login but my workstation ID

2) Database=SQLT which is not mentioned in the post only ODBC and XML are discussed

If this is a problem please let me know and I will change them.

The database is OK; I don't think there should be any login in the .ini file, but it shouldn't be connected.
The thing is that avast! doesn't really do anything special - it just tries to open the file, just like any other program, and if the opening fails (meaning that Windows doesn't allow this process to access the file), it returns the corresponding error.
So, this is really strange... it shouldn't happen, unless:
- the currently logged-on user doesn't have access rights to read these files
- there's some other low-level program running that somehow interferes with avast! access... but as I said, there's nothing special about avast! scanner. If it was avast! resident protection, OK, maybe... but the on-demand scanner is really just an ordinary tool.

I understand what your saying but this happened during a pre-boot scan.  Anyways I tried what you suggested and I moved the entire Linksys folder to another physical (not logical) drive. I then scheduled a pre-boot scan for that folder only(I wanted to recreate events as close as possible). The system rebooted and the scan ran with no errors. So just to see if there was a possible issue with the original drive (drive C) I scheduled another pre-boot scan for c:\download directory. Again the system rebooted and the scan ran with no errors. Hmmmm...very strange. Could there be an issue with a pre-boot full scan and not with a selective scan? I would run another full but due to have 4 physical hard drives and around 600GB of data, I don't have the time at this moment. I will however run a full as soon as time permits and let you know if it fails.

Ah, it was a boot-time scan... that's even stranger.
Well, the boot-time scanner runs under LOCALSYSTEM account, so it is possible to remove access rights for files/folders with the described behavior, but it's certainly not a common thing to do. Normally, the boot-time scanner should be able to access such files without any problems...

Well I'm running a small corp domain with 2003 server and 3 workstations. Looks like I got hacked. Checked group policies and they were all screwed up. Tighten up security today by setting up IPsec with encripted certificates for all ip traffic. Also defined several other security policies on domain controller. Geez..nothing of value in my lan, guess they just want to screw things up. Well hope they pull thier hair out trying to get back in..hehe. Anyways thanks for your help and if i come across anymore "strange" things with Avast I'll let you know. ;D

Are you using avast Home in the workstations?

Of course not!! Server edition on server and Pro on workstations as stated in my first reply.
