Title: Switching AVs
Post by: Fluff on August 25, 2006, 02:39:50 AM
Hello, I am currently new to the forum and would like to ask a few things about Avast! Home Edition.

I currently have Norton Anti-Virus 2006 installed on my computer. I originally didn't want Norton, but my computer has just recently been called mine (Was my brother's at first)

For Starters, Norton was already downloaded on my computer, so I couldn't use Avast at the same time. I've had it for about Two Months, and hadn't received a virus until Yesterday. However, Norton detected it and said what it needed to do, so I followed with what it said. I got curious and checked what the virus was online, a nd how to remove it, but the site said to do the opposite of what the actual program told me to do. I ended up having to search through the Norton Program to find it, and remove it manually (Or I'm pretty sure I removed it) But today, it tells me to un-install, and re-install it. I now have the chance to instead, install and switch to Avast.

So I have a few questions.

Is Avast better, or just as good as Norton?
Is it easier to use, and does it detect better?
I've heard un-installing Norton will get rid of it, but still leave traces that can result in errors of sorts. Can this be resolved?

I'm not exactly sure which AV program to use. I've heard a lot of great things about Avast! (Not so much with Norton)  so any help would be nice, Thanks!

Hi and welcome,
If you search for SYMNRT you will find a utility for cleaning up the registry leftovers that plague norton removal.
once you have run this then you will be able to install Avast and have confidence . ;)

Thanks for the reply!
I'm still new to the whole "Computer" but learning new things is great. I'll be sure to do this if I get Avast!

avast allows you the boot time scanning to remove recurring infections...

Is Avast better, or just as good as Norton?
Please...  ;D
This is avast forum, we love avast, we can't see ANY advantage of using Norton  :P
avast has low resources, is not a resource-hog-all-in-one-application...
avast updates are incremental...
From NAV, avast detection is not that different.
avast is configurable at most  8)

Is it easier to use, and does it detect better?
Could be... At least the forum is free, you'll get excelent support if you want to configure avast different from the default settings, meeting your needs and hopes.

I've heard un-installing Norton will get rid of it, but still leave traces that can result in errors of sorts. Can this be resolved?

1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2006031710323113?Open&src=&docid=2005033108162039&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg=) tool info.
3) Boot.
4) Install avast! Boot.
5) See what you get.

Full SymNRT info is available, I'll post if you want  ;)

I'm not exactly sure which AV program to use. I've heard a lot of great things about Avast! (Not so much with Norton)  so any help would be nice, Thanks!
What are you waiting for to be happy?  :-*
A lot of us are ex-NAV users  :-X

 :)  Hi Fluff :

And I recommend more through steps to be done, to
reduce the possibility that ANY Norton remmants may
be on the computer to "conflict" with the newly installed
Avast, namely AFTER uninstalling ALL Norton components
from your "Add/Remove Programs" AND AFTER running
the SymNRT "Removal Tool", that you use your
computer's "Search" function, then click "All Files and
folders" and enter the search "term" "Norton" & later
"Symantec" and "Delete" all appropiate entries.
Title: Re: Switching AVs

Ok, Just to make sure on what to do...

Un-install Norton from the "Add-Remove Programs" Icon in Control Panel, then Restart.

Next, Download the three Files, Using MSIFIX, then SYMNRT, and finally SYMMSICLEANUP. Run it, click yes and ok, then restart.

Just to be safe, go through the Search Function and look for any remains of Norton.

Doesn't sound so bad, but one more question...

Are the three files left on your computer, or are they removed after using the Norton Removal Tool?

They will be where you saved them (I believe) as the removal tools are looking for remnants of NAV not themselves, they can easily be deleted once you are sure NAV has been removed completely and avast is running OK.

Basically, anything that has "Norton" or "Symantec" in the name (Files and such) I should delete from my computer?

Better if you 'move' the files to another folder (new one created by you) than to delete them...
Remember, they're not infected, just can conflict... if you delete wrong files is worse.
But, before doing that, follow Add/Remove programs and the other steps, they should be enough  8)
Title: Re: Switching AVs
Post by: Fluff on August 25, 2006, 09:32:44 PM
Ok, I did that.
I used the "Search" function, and it brought up a few things...

Link.symantec.url
Link.symantecstore.url
PNG files
Some Text Documents, and a Symantec Security check.

So i'd just move these to a New Made folder, then delete?

(Terribly sorry for being newbish, just don't want anything to happen)

Link.symantec.url

Safe to delete immediatly...

Symantec Security check.
What is this? A file? Just move these to a New Made folder, then delete...

The "Symantec Security Check" Is in;

Start>All Programs> PC Security and Backup, and it's in there.

Again, thank you so much for the help!

I am now a member of Avast!

Everything seems to be working fine, no problems yet.
Is it safe the remove the 3 files that were used to clean Norton up? Or is it recommended to just leave it?

Again, thank you to all who helped me with this problem. I'm glad to now be a member of Avast! and hope to stay.

There is no rush to delete they aren't taking up much space, I would wait to ensure things are stable a week or two.

 :)  Hi Fluff :

      You need more than Avast to protect your computer ;
for GOOD & FREE programs to better protect it, see :

      http://members.accessbee.com/mitch/NewbieOldieUpdated.html .

Edit : left out one of the "c"s in "access"; now correct .

Do what you want  ;D
I suggest waiting some days, make sure avast is working, then you can delete them... you will avoid having to download them again, although this will be highly unprobable...
Welcome aboard  8)

Interesting that Dr Web link checker (Firefox extension) won't completely check the link. McAfee Site Advisor gives the site less than a green rating.

Hi, I have a small problem trying to remove Norton, as I have an older cpu, and I am the second owner, when I go to uninstall Norton, it asks for a password before it will remove it.  Of course I have no idea what the password is, and was wondering if there was a bypass.  (it is a corparate version)  Thanks for you help!
Title: Re: Switching AVs

You could check these out, I don't know if you will have any more success, perhaps it won't ask for a password.

What version of Norton do you have ?

Manual Removal NAV 2003 or earlier - Manual Removal NAV 2003 or earlier (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606)
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=)
You can also download SymNRT, a Norton uninstall tool (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/SymNRT/1125124391/1) that uninstalls all Norton 2004/2005/2006 products.

I just checked and there seems to be a problem with the manual removal for nav 2003 or earlier page.

However, I have just reread your post and since you mention (it is a corporate version) I doubt these solutions may work. You could try a google search for manual removal norton corporate version and see what that brings.

http://www.google.com/search?q=manual+removal+norton+corporate+version+9
Try this link - http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2002031914291648, this has a number of other links for Version 9 depending on what your OS is.

Good luck.

You may want to download avast and save the file so you can find it later, rather than go on-line with no protection later.

SymNRT doesn't work with the Corporate version.  You need NoNav instead, but the only way I know to get the current version is from a password protected Symantec site (google has some matches on older versions that might work with SAV 9.x).

If we get PMs back in the near future I could send you a copy.

@ Kubec - I know you don't like schedules but it would be nice to able able to give some help with this.

Yawn, isn't is always the way the most obvious default, surprised no one changed it.

I trust you have been able to install avast now ?

We have been through that Tech, suggested earlier, as it was the Symantec corporate version for which SymNRT doesn't work.

zippo1guy has however, been able to remove it.
