Title: Avast blocking sharing?
Post by: davidor on December 03, 2019, 11:24:40 AM
I've got Avast Premium Security on my desktop.  I have two laptops on a private network in the same workgroup.  I just can't get the laptops to see the desktop, let alone access files on it.  I've set everything I can think of in windows to allow sharing with anybody, but still can't see it from the laptops. Is there anything in Premium Security which would prevent the desktop being visible on the network?

Set the Avast Firewall to private mode and reboot.

Thanks for your (very) prompt reply.  I'll try that.

Well tried that.  Still can't see this pc.  Could the ransomware shield be responsible, although I've set that so that it should let private network pcs through.

Try the Geek Area settings, mentioned here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?msg=1505540

Done the geek settings bit as described in your link.  Also have Ransomware shield turned off.   I can now see the desktop, and it asks and accepts credentials when trying to access folder, but then says I (as laptop user) do not have permission - ask your network administrator to request access.  Everything is shared on the desktop with full access.  I am even logged in to both devices with same Microsoft username.
I've spent days trying to get this  sharing to work.  I'm tempted to install a generic Win 10 in place of the Acer-modified version that is on it.

Just as a test, try disabling the Avast Firewall. (you are still protected by the Windows firewall) reboot the system and see if that takes care of the problem.
If you still have a problem, it's not with the Avast firewall and you can enable it again.

Well I've fixed it!  With many thanks to Asyn.  Thanks for your suggestion too Bob.
It seems it was a combination of Avast's over-enthusiastic protection and Windows sharing settings.  The problem was that you change something in one, it doesn't work so you change something elsewhere, change something else .... and so it goes on.
It seems the geek suggestions in the link given by Asyn was one of the problems, then Windows didn't want to share even though the Windows "help" ( I use the term advisedly) instructions were followed to the letter.  So thanks guys for your assistance.
I've still got the ransomware shield disabled, but will re-enable that and hope it all still works.
David
