Title: Do I need to run (or schedule) QuickScan? Or does it run automatically?
Post by: James Newbie on January 09, 2020, 10:49:39 PM
I have an old computer, so I don't want to run scans unnecessarily. If QuickScan (or equivalent) is automatically run, then there's no need for me to schedule a custom scan unless there's a problem.

I have the free version of Avast AV.

Thank you for your time.

With a resident (on-access) scanner the need for on-demand scans is much depreciated. For the most part dormant/inert files are being scanned, the other active files are going to be scanned by the resident shields when they are activated.

There is no requirement to run or schedule on-demand scans.  Generally I only run an on-demand scan as a result of a question in the forums.

In fact you probably have the Smart Scan (NOT so smart) set to do a scheduled scan by default, check and disable it if you don't want to run it.

I did run the smart scan, to see what it scanned and or found.  Having run it once do you need to run it again, I think not.  For me the smart scan seems to be a vehicle to promote other avast paid services.

Be aware that issues with Smart Scan from last update have recently been reported and has been acknowledged by Avast here:

Further confirmation (if it were needed) why not to run on-demand (inc. Smart) Scans ;)

What I can't understand is how is this just coming to light when this is essentially a long time after the update/build causing no issues. Surely we all can't decided not to run the smart (not) scan.

By all accounts there has been a fix for this issue.
