Title: Defragmenting a PC
Post by: Coolmario88 on January 25, 2020, 06:47:17 AM
Hey everyone long time no speak! :D

I'm just wanting your opinions on something, Is using windows 10's built in defrag tool enough or should somebody that is a heavy gamer use say Piriform's defraggler? Could using any other cause damage to my operating system or not?

Personally I rarely use a defragmenter, certainly not necessary if you are using an SSD drive (as in my win10 laptop) rather than a HDD drive.  In fact it is positively discouraged to defrag an SSD drive.

A recommendation for any gamer would be to use an SSD drive, much faster disk access and less heat.  That would prove to be much better for heavy gamer use.

When I have used a defragmenter, I haven't found any issue with the OS.

I was always my understanding that for Win10 it is not necessary to perform a manual defrag, as it was done anyhow in the background.
Also, as mentioned by DavidR, doing a defrag on a SSD is not good idea, as it adds extra read/write events to a device with limited capacity for them. The only manual defrag I do (on a very rare occassion) is on my Win XP HDD where I may use Periform defraggler.
