Even though avast! doesn't work with latest Vista build (not Alwil's fault), I am sure Microsoft guys will fix that problem for the next Vista build...
Anyway, for all those on Windows XP, you can enjoy new Vista feel and look using our beloved avast! Yes, I had some time on my hands, and I wanted to see our antivirus in Vista-styled skin. It will be the first antivirus with Vista skin.
Still working on it, please be patient... I still have to compile all those graphical parts for Program Settings panels. Other than than, skin is pretty much ready and it's working great.
Interesting thing is... I created every single part of this skin in Windows Vista build 5536, and now checking it on Windows XP since avast! doesn't work with new Vista release.
When I'm done with this skin, I will contact, or at least I will try to contact Vlk... he's not answering my e-mails lately (probably too busy), but let's hope this skin will find its place inside avast! skins download section.
Oh yes... the name of this skin is aVist
I hope you all (or at least, most of you) will like it.

Ok people... skin is officialy finished and compiled. All I need now is to hear from someone from Alwil. The reason is, I don't want to bug them sending this skin to everybody's e-mail (Alwil staff), simply because I don't know who is suppose to be my POC (Point of contact).
I would greatly appreciate if someone from Alwil can direct me... after that, I will send this skin installation file to whoever is willing to upload it to avast! skins download section.

Hehe, i wanted to drop a line yesterday (well it was today already just very very early in the morning). So i skipped the comment for the time. Have seen the design though and i like it a lot. Will certanly go nicely along with my VistaCG or VistaXP theme in Windows XP ;D

Another small update... I changed appearance of HELP button. Now it's more noticeable, and IMHO it looks little better. Also, top buttons are better organized and aligned. Here is how new Help button looks like now:

I remember Igor, Pavel or Vlk (can't recall for sure) told me once that you guys are not visiting this part of the forum too often, but I didn't want to "polute" any other part of the forum with non-security related topic, so I thought this would be the best... that's why I asked Vlk in the past if we can have a separate forum where we could post skins related topics (updates/changes etc.).

Unfortunatelly I didn't receive your e-mail after I sent you skin installation file. Must be that ended up in my Spam folder. I'll check it now.
Also, it would be better if new skins are placed on the top of the page and not at the bottom. At least I think it would look better and easier for people to realise that there are some new skins ready for downloading.

If you are able to use skins with your current OS then you should be able to use this. Open the Simple User Interface and right click on the skin or use the menu and select Select Skin, Then click the Get more skins from .... link and select the new skin.

You can use the skin on every Windows with avast! installed ;)

I was always against the idea that some other skin could be default avast! skin, just because I thought that deafult avast! skin should be one that's been made by Alwil's official graphic designer. But when I look at this skin, I'm really starting to think that after all Alwil needs to change something in the near future. I've read a lot of avast! reviews all over the net, and it is really incredible how many people think that current avast default skin looks too media-player looking. Computer security application like avast! is should really look more professional, and the first impression is really important... default skin in this case is true first impression.
I am sure this skin looks nice, great, beautiful to some people, but also it looks ugly and too colorful to some others, but for sure it's not full of bells and whistles, it just contains some of those Vista OS effects. Besides, it looks just like any other normal window in Vista, no extra images, nothing... They say: "...keep it simple and it will look beautiful..." In many cases that's true. But, in the same time it doesn't mean, we shouldn't follow these trends in graphic design of new and modern OSes. I believe I gave it a modern Vista OS look, and in the same time I kept simplicity of one ordinary OS window.
IMHO, that's how avast! default skin should look like, not because I created it, but because of all those people that were asking for something like this. I was reading and listening all those comments, and at least I tried to make it come true. I know I gave my best... results ? I don't know... you people are here to decide. ;)

I like the graphics of the latest Skin, but I have to say I also like the silhouette_4in1 skin, especially the size, not too small as to be difficult to interpret and not too large to take up valuable screen real estate.
The G5 skin although relatively small is easy to find your way around, but the default silver panel is as many mention too much like an audio player and dificult to figure out what to do

IMHO, avast! users should be better informed if there is something new, some update etc. In this case, there is something new... brand new skin.

Oh, just remembered. Have you implimented transparency too? Vista is all transparent in all directions and since avast! skins support this it could be nice. Unless you already implimented it ;)

No transparency and that was intentionally. First thing... translucency feature enabled in avast! just gives some problems, nothing else. Take a look at screenshots I attached:

Second thing that was one of the reasons I didn't want to go into transparency feature at all, was that I would have to use TGAs with transparent alpha channel. It's been reported that skins with TGAs used inside of them, just gave some problems to users using some specific video cards. That's why I completely threw out the idea of having transparent features inside my skins.
Also, biggest problem of all... size of the skin would drastically change (increase) and I am sure no one wants that.
Regarding the problem with avast! settings when translucency is enabled, I remember Vlk and Igor mentioned something in the past that they know about it but they don't know how to solve that problem. IMHO, translucency ON/OFF option should be completely left out from avast! settings. Totally useless feature that just gives some problems to some computer configurations.

I just managed to create fully functional aVist skin but this time with transparency (translucent effect inside avast! settings would have to be enabled to see that effect, and it would work only on newer OSes like Windows 2000/XP and Vista).
However, there are some issues with TGAs being used inside skins, particularly with those buttons on the top of the transparent parts of the skin. So whenever you create a button with transparent surrounding areas, it would show those transparent parts over already transparent background of the skin. I am not sure if you people will understand this, but whoever tried to create skins for avast! knows what I'm talking about. Also, there is no way you can create a button in other shape than square and that gives even more problems (see all those rounded corners buttons ? ;) )
So, my conclusion was... if skin can't look and behave 100% without those small pixel glitches (I am even sure most of you would never ever notice those little tiny pixel issues), I am not going to publish it. In a matter of fact, I already completely erased it and even if I decide to publish it one day, I would have to do it all over again for which I relly don't have enough time. This is the only proof that transparent aVist skin really existed ;D
My file manager (spot the size of the skin and compare it to the size of the "normal" aVist skin above the transparent one... not a single byte added. I even managed to keep the same size even though I used TGA with alpha channeling):

Actually, it's not Microsoft's fault. They did everything perfectly to incorporate those effects in new Vista. That's why it's so demanding and you can't have those effects in Windows XP (Transparent blur).
This time it has a lot to do with sloppy ActiveSkin editor and limitation that buttons can only be cut out as squares.
