Title: engine update

What is the point of having the choice of being notified when an update is available if you just jam it down everybody's throat?

Engine updates are part of the  Engine updates and VPS, not part of the Program update.

Are you saying that you have the Engine and Virus Updates set to notify ?
The default action is Automatic, if you change that you won't be getting the virus signature streaming updates either.

I have virus definitions set to auto update.
The application is set to notify.  It is my understanding that the notification has not worked in quite a while.  I understand this and check manually from time to time.

My heartburn is the update that occurred at the end of February.  I was doing Microsoft patching and I would never update Avast engine until I had completed the Microsoft patching.  I avoid updating both at the same time to help with troubleshooting if a patch screws something up.  With the way things are going at Microsoft, odds are they will be at fault.
