Dear global avast-users,
What is very bad during all this, is that MS and Google,
so actually all of Silicon Valley and Silicon Forest leaves us out in the cold for now.
No more browser updates and patches coming
(developers stay at home/work from home during lock-down, and major companies are rather afraid of espionage).
The economic damage done here in Europe is beyond belief.
YouTube video quality downgraded 25% because of higher demand.
Firefox allowing weak TLS for corona-websites. :o
We should step up security in these uncertain circumstances with a common threat, not weaken it.
Cybercriminals and provocative state actors are just waiting round the corner to take advantage of such a situation.
ransomware and fraud flourish as never before.
The fabric of our known societies starts to come loose at the seams.
Let us all be vigilant.
Stay in-doors, keep your distance, the young should take care of the elderly.
Stay digitally safe and secure,

The county I live in just issued a stay at home order for 30 days, but I have a feeling it will be longer. On a positive note, I did score some toilet paper which has been scarce along with everything else. Our supply chain has been in a shambles with all the hoarding going on.

Our biggest problem is finding eggs. I don't understand the mentality of the hoarders.
Most have bought so much that much of it will eventually spoil. Just makes no sense.

A little light relief/humour helps at dire times.
In my very early youth I can remember when toilets were outdoors and squares of newspaper were hanging on the door. Oh happy days, when my parents got married they were living with dad's parents rented house. When dad's parents emigrated to Australia, he just carried on paying the rent.
We lived there for several years until the local housing department found out that the original occupant had emigrated we got evicted, which was crazy as the rent was being paid and the same surname was paying the rent. Having made us homeless the council had to find us new accommodation, this turned out to be a newly built house with an indoor toilet, oh happy days :)

- Do not panic. How hard you panic, you can earn nothing.
- Get some good food and enough sleep. Keep your body healthy.
- Be sure to gargle and wash your hands.
- Avoid crowded places. Wear a mask when you have to.
- Have some fun. Fortune comes in by a merry gate.

There should be some clarity. It isn't that ZOOM is particularly vulnerable.
It happens to be very widely used and all the new folks using it need to learn how to use it safely and how to protect
their privacy and integrity of their ZOOM meetings.

Hi bob3160,
FBI is now targeting Zoom and handing out warnings.
Companies have a lot of information, that better stays there where it is.
Zoom apparently is not the best tool to do that.
When you wanna share all and everything of data you sit on with the rest of the world, perfecly so,
stay with zoom; but not everyone wanna do that.
Zoom tool means Google and you know what is Google's core-business,
selling as much of your data to the highest bidder.
Google should secure their account users on Zoom against whatever snoopers, period.
Can they do that? I expect an update of the software and better E2E encryption.

Hi kalimantan,
Long time coronavirus has gone undetected for in Indonesia Raja.
Also social distancing is sometimes a problem there.
But when you consider the number of victims in relation to the total population of these islands,
it is not worse than other Asian nations.
Singapore seems to do well as they always are known to be very strict followers of all set governmental restrictions.
Let us hope this virus will leave the region very soon and people can return to good health and renewed prosperity.
A lot of our electronic devices are being produced in Indonesia (imported via Belgium and Hamburg, Germany).
Kesehatan prima,

When the corona-COVID-19 apps are gonna be rolled out, what we need now is an app like LightBlue
(to save on our Bluetooth android battery consumption) and a reasonable Bluetooth Proxy to protect against snooping,
so the apps can function as foreseen, but not beyond that.
These apps should not "function creepily" being abused for total surveillance purposes by "the forces that be".
One should realize some of the Bluetooth patents now used, were already acquired and patented by facebook Inc. in 2016.
Did they already foresee this was coming our and their way? :-X

Hi bob3160,
You are so right there, as we can only establish someone could be a coronavirus infected person
well after the fact of him or her spreading the coronavirus
(sometimes we are a fortnight late getting aware of the fact someone actually has attracted corona).
Then we have mild cases where there is no immunity setting in,
and severe cases that have immunity after being healed/cured.
Then there is also severe under-testing within many communities.
What is the use of apps and deploying thermal cameras, even a lock-down,
when we are running constantly after the real facts with this our invisible enemy?

How Facebook can Flatten the Curve of the Coronavirus Infodemic
Study indicates Facebook is rife with bogus cures and conspiracy theories that remain on the platform long enough to put millions of people at risk
Facebook can flatten the curve of the Coronavirus Infodemic by shutting down. How 'bout that? Shut down all the false information, and it's mainly false information. Video game addiction is very real, too, and sales are up. I've noticed ads on TV for all kinds of new apps and devices to put in your home. Let's download them, don't bother reading the terms or privacy policy(s).
Government? Ain't no such thing as privacy anymore in this country or anywhere else. No one seems to give a rats patootie. Don't get me started on people freely volunteering every private detail of their lives online. ???

Ultimately, those infected, minus those who died = those who recovered.
The problem being, those not detected, asymptomatic, or the tens of thousands still being treated, or self-isolated and not confirmed as infected.
Or as they say in statistics, rubbish in rubbish out.

@DavidR,
That's why I fear that a covid-19 app is never gonna work. It is just gonna give us all a false sense of being secure.
(yep, for what actually?). Any sneeze or cough could be "that particular sneeze or cough",
especially when the elderly start to sneeze and cough. ;D
In the old days lepers moved around with a rattle, now the alleged old corona prepper will cling to a smartphone app.
Even when they make it mandatory it does not seem to change the overall situation much i.m.h.o.
We all going to experience a plandemic crash of the economy, bigger then we have ever seen.
Better to steer away earlier than later from the situation at hand, because this seems to me to be the nastiest part.

Would you believe that in the Army I had to take a Testing Techniques and Analysis course, essentially what to test, when to test, how to test and validation (statistics) of training. Even harder to believe was that this course was two weeks long.
All this to prevent the rubbish in element so you didn't get rubbish out.
The major problem is from statistics, you can manipulate the answers you get by the parameters you set. As they also say, Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics.

Aren't Governments already working on contract tracing apps ?
Though UK Government IT initiatives in the past have been woeful, I have little confidence in them. But the current UK Government scheme for covid-19 tracking, the data is meant to be kept for 20 years. Supposedly stored on Amazon computers but not accessible by Amazon, I find that hard to believe.
Now do I trust Google or Apple, probably even less than Governments.

I believe they said it was to be a guideline information database for possible future infections.
Me being me find that hard to swallow as would be signing up for the app in the first place.
In some other related information, they consider the hoaxers reporting false infection from a location where the population density is high. Scaring the pants of people and provoking an adverse/false response from governments. We all know there are plenty of these cranks about.

Until recent spike of COVID19 in Victoria, Australia seemed to be doing well with low numbers of cases. I thought he would say the App did not work because of low numbers of infections in the population, but he then says it does not work even during latest spike. Not sure what % of population downloaded or then actually use the App, due to reported concerns over personal privacy.
It is winter down there. Before the recent lock-down, shopping centres, hairdressers, gyms etc were all open and face masks were not generally worn. The spread of the virus seems worse in cooler conditions, maybe when more people are indoors, hence concern about potential second wave here in Norhern Hemisphere his coming winter.
Does anyone know if a COVID19 tracing App is really making a difference anywhere in the world?

Does anyone know if a COVID19 tracing App is really making a difference anywhere in the world?
Most probably only in the countries where people are forced to use it.
I can't see how anyone could be forced to use it, even in certain countries. How do they get it on their phones, how do they know it is on their phones, how do they get people in such a country to switch their phones on.
I have never thought these apps are a good idea, even if enough people installed the app to possibly be effective when there are hacking stories abound. Not to mention the potential for false negative and deliberate false positive reporting to spread fear and alarm in areas of high/dense population. Many such articles about these doubts, fears.

Well, that's what they did in e.g. China. They had checkpoints there.

We can see just how effective that was/is (to start with), what they need to be concerned with is not monitoring after the infection in the first place. Prevention, not cure should be the watchword.

2. Agreed..!!

To be affective, tracing apps must be used by 60% of the population.

Whilst effective, lockdown and enforcement checkpoints are not examples of a working COVID19 trace and track app.
South Korea were good at track and trace, but believe they were combining card transactions, mobile phone tracking and other personal data to do this, not just a app. I suspect use of bluetooth for proximity detection is not precise enough and varies from device to device.
In UK word was that Germany had a working app. true/false?
There are quite a few international posters on this forum, so my question still stands, is there a working app out there or is it just fiction.

Hi ye all,
You will get a bonus on your order with many firms for turning on your android geo-location for a period of 3 years.
Surveillance of individuals may do the trick but wearing face-masks does not help face-recognition, does it?
In the Netherlands they monitor the general sewer-outlets,
checks on the common loo gives reliable estimates for local outbreaks.
Are you lucky to have bloodgroup 0, or is your luck in having A?

Bonus, no thanks, who knows just what else this data might be used for.
Common as muck, O Positive, considering that O Positive is the largest/ most common blood type (but not by much, A Positive is right up there).

World Figures
O-negative (6.6 percent) B-positive (8.5 percent) A-positive (35.7 percent) O-positive (37.4 percent)

While we have a working app here (Stopp Corona), currently only 8% have it installed, so it's basically useless.

In the Netherlands where I live there is an app called " CoronaMelder " in a closed Beta at the moment. I am one of the IOS Beta testers. A nationwide launch is targeted for september 1st.

Common as muck, ......
Oh thought you were referring to polonus post about sewage monitoring in The Netherlands. ;)
Security and privacy aside, still not sure the technology behind phone app's is yet proven accurate and up to the job.
But if few people actually download run the app on their devices, then it is effectively useless.

Well the UK trialled their corona track and trace app, in of all places the Isle of White https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Wight - Area: 380 km² - Population (mid-2019 est.): 141,538. I don't think it was big enough and the take up of the app would have been very small (if other trails are much to go on) to have been a good trial.
Not long after that, having found some issues and no doubt poor data (low numbers no doubt) the whole thing has been abandoned. This is not unusual when these words are used together UK Government and Information Technology. Seems to turn to rat droppings and very expensive rat droppings at that.

"rat droppings" Are you hinting that Dutch poo monitoring could be the most technological solution to track and trace?
Can sewage be traced to individual persons and therefore give rise to privacy issues?
I also seem to remember rats being blamed for the Black Death, but that was a different public health crisis and bit before my time. :)

NO, quoting in isolation which detracts from its meaning.
The UK Government has form for screwing up major IT projects, e.g turning to rat sh1t (or rat droppings).

It makes sad reading, but just shows the problems faced trying to deliver large IT projects. Usually over Promising (by ministers), Under Achieving, Constantly changing, Massively over budget and or ultimately Abandoned. Governments make statements, frequently changing (sound bites) not knowing the full problems or exactly what it is they seek to achieve.
This leads to no clearly defined program specification, so some IT department/Company start working on an unclear specification that is constantly changing (if not abandoned), resulting in either large cost overruns or worse having to pay the full price and no product.

It was said that she ordered pizza everyday but did not on that day, so pizza-shop suspected something might have happened.

But I really liked this bit.
The 'world beating' Serco Test and Trace system is being run on Excel instead of database software - which has caused the latest issues.
Next they'll tell us it's run on Windows 95 and they manually back it up on floppy disks each night.

lol, but Win95 may be more robust to malwares than latest systems ;D
But we can't laugh this thing here in Japan, it is said officials still uses Faxes to receive positive cases of COVID from institutions... :-X ::)

Well as far as I'm aware there are still many departments in the Health Services still using XP as the bespoke software would need to be rewritten (massive time and money involved). In the meantime (if I remember correctly) they are paying through the nose for continued XP support.

Sad, but true and I would guess others could well be in the same low tech situation. Low tech but possibly still effective no computer required to compile them, pencil and paper. But then again, wouldn't faxes be harder to hack :)

A really good article which really needs to better disseminated when you consider what some think is a face mask.
Plus why it is important for all to wear, especially the young, who feel invulnerable or don't show symptoms or generally feel well.
Which brings it to, why should they only be needed when in shops, when only a very short time is spent actually in shops and taken off when outside but still mixing with large numbers of unmasked people.

Here in Germany, it is discussed whether the lockdown should be continued until Dec 20.
I just don't see a point in ending it before Christmas as there will be many families and larger groups celebrating together and then the whole procedure will start again in the new year.
Nevertheless, I hope all of this will be over soon. Until then, stay safe and wear a mask!

T'was a month before Christmas,
And all through the town,
People wore masks,
That covered their frown.
The frown had begun
Way back in the Spring,
When a global pandemic
Changed everything.
They called it corona,
But unlike the beer,
It didn’t bring good times,
It didn’t bring cheer.
Airplanes were grounded,
Travel was banned.
Borders were closed
Across air, sea and land.
As the world entered lockdown
To flatten the curve,
The economy halted,
And folks lost their nerve.
From March to July
We rode the first wave,
People stayed home,
They tried to behave.
When summer emerged
The lockdown was lifted.
But away from caution,
Many folks drifted.
Now it’s November
And cases are spiking,
Wave two has arrived,
Much to our disliking.
It’s true that this year
Has had sadness a plenty,
We’ll never forget
The year 2020.
And just ‘round the corner -
The holiday season,
But why be merry?
Is there even one reason?
To decorate the house
And put up the tree,
Who will see it,
No one but me.
But outside my window
The snow gently falls,
And I think to myself,
Let’s deck the halls!
So, I gather the ribbon,
The garland and bows,
As I play those old carols,
My happiness grows.
Christmas is not cancelled
And neither is hope.
If we lean on each other,
I know we can cope

Hi DavidR,
Don't forget to properly ventilate.
In between exams we the essential workers will have the windows open and ventilate, ventilate.
This is an aerosol virus, remember!
Next to that boost your immune system as well as you can with a good solid dose of Vitamin D and Selenium.
Round the North Sea older people took a dose of cod liver oil all months having an R in it, a spoonful a day before bed-time.
Full of vitamin A-D.
They even rubbed their children's chest with it, or fishermen took some stingray oil.
The fattiest substance in the world.
Anyway, stay healthy offline and online, my good friends anywhere.
And don't let the virus catch ye, stay alert and keep to the recommendations as best you can.

Ha, ventilate, what and catch cold or flu (with potential concern over covid-19 symptoms) :)
I get all the ventilation I need during my daily exercise (2,430 days in a row so far), enough to almost get blown away some days.
I have been taking Vitamin D and C regularly and a general multi-mineral/vitamin for years. Plus Omega 3,6&9, but Cod liver oil, yuck, remember that with dread from childhood, no way I'm starting that again ;)
Vaccination, I guess is the next stage when that comes around.

Well it didn't take these scum long to use this as a weapon to scam/attack.
That said people should be aware, that there is a priority order to this which has been in the newspapers, media, news, etc. If you aren't in the categories being vaccinated at the time and are being offered it then it could be false.
I'm sure it won't just be limited to the UK, as other countries start to ramp up their vaccination program.
I think the other one to watch out for are the queue jumping offers.

I hate the 20:20 hindsight mongers, I'm not sure if what is said here isn't more self-promotion than beneficial. What are we to do wait until we have absolutely all permutations
Professor Lindy Durrant, an immunologist at the university and head of the spin-off company ScanCell, said the next generation of vaccines needs to be better prepared to tackle the virus as it "learns" to evade the immune system.
"What has happened was predictable," she exclusively told Sky News.
"We have the advantage of learning from the inadequacies of the first generation of vaccines to make the second generation better."
For me it is more about promotion of the spin-off company.
What she is effectively saying is we shouldn't have bothered with the development and push to production until we have all of our ducks in a row as such. We would still be waiting right now and not have vaccinated fifteen million of at risk groups.
Oh, I had my first Covid-19 vaccination the Saturday before last.
Would I rather have waited until all possible contingencies were in place, absolutely not, plonker.

Personally I have difficulty trusting such massive databases, no matter whom controls them.
A statistics/computing term, Rubbish in Rubbish out, so accuracy is highly important.
We have already seen how bad many tracking apps are as any inaccuracy could cascade to people causing them undue concern.

Who in their right mind would buy a vaccine from the dark net.
I can see those who don't want the vaccine wanting to be able to get the benefit of having a vaccine passport, but again some countries haven't introduced them and there is no globally approved/authorised one. Not to mention how can you trust the dark net or would it even work, you wouldn't know that until you tried it, which is too late, they already have your money and no recompense.
Also what information do you have to give for this documentation and what are they going to do with it afterwards.

NHS Covid-19 app update blocked for breaking Apple and Google's rules
https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-56713017
I have never considered installing any codid-19 app, not just for this, but the fact they are more likely to be cr4p like other Government IT project. Over budget, overdue and under achieving. My other concerns is the notifications you get just aren't going to be accurate enough.
Lets say you go into a large town or city so the chances of your being in the same place as someone subsequently being positive for Covid-19 is a possibility. But you have to be pretty close to said person at the exact time and location (within transmission range 6 feet, social distancing guidelines) and unprotected. When I go into town I wear a mask all of the time until I get back to the car, not just when I go into a store/shop, etc.
So I have never loaded the app to be able to scan QR Code to receive warnings. I think that people need to take more responsibility for their own protection, remain masked whist out and about, regardless of the lowering of restrictions.
I have been into several places with the QR code contact tracing and in all of that time I have only seen 1 person actually scanning the QR code (and for the most part you had to be masked to enter the premises). For this kind of thing to be worthwhile everybody would have to be doing it. If they are masked their risk is greatly reduced anyway making contact tracing a bit of a waste of time (based on being masked, etc.).

Nice that you can see it now.
Another change, I now have the NHS (National Health Service) APP (I guess you could still say Government) as opposed to the Covid-19 App.
However this one appears to differ from the other failed attempt, in that I access my NHS account, this holds information on my Covid vaccinations and a COVID Pass required for some places in England and going abroad, etc.

Dear Avast forum members!
You can surely discuss this. But I think, that you are extremely forced to change the direction, after YOU got tested for Covid-19 and YOU got the result, that you're positiv like me since a few days.
If you have no other underlying desease (like me), you can easyly survive by e.g. 'reading a book'.
Where your data are stored isn't so important then.
;)
Everybody may stay healthy!

Unfortunately getting the shots and thereby giving up your information isn't a guarantee that you aren't going to catch COVID.

Dear Bob!
1: You're totally wright. That's our (4) experience. I did almost everything not to get caught by Covid,
but my wife was the first of us. I could escape only for 2 days!
2: It would be very interisting how many shots you got. My wife got 4 & me 4, too. But after the last
shot over half a year no other shot was offered!!!
Linda has a bad cough, but I'm still rather fit as you can see. So we all try to recover totally from this by 'reading a book', or sitting before a computer or looking tv.
;)
All the best for Alice and you.

I'm hoping to see someone at urgent care today to get meds for my throat on ear.
