I completed a program update and rebooted. After this, performance was terrible. TaskMgr shows AvastSvc at >50% constantly.
Went to "add/remove components" and found the cleanup tool and several other components enabled, although they had been removed previously.

A recent update added Cleanup back into my installation - even though I had excluded it previously."
