I keep getting a big popup in the middle of my screen (even in fullscreen videos/games) that tells me my free licence is expiring and I need to renew. I click renew free, but it just takes me to buy it and then pops up again 30 minutes later. >:( I'm sick and tired of this popup getting me killed in game

Yup step 3 is my nemesis. I'm doing exactly those instructions, but step 3 keeps coming back and I still have a big red button telling me to active. I even tried updating even though I had that on auto.

Make sure Avast isn't blocked by a firewall and try again.

My firewall wasn't the problem and my internet is more than fine. I finally updated on attempt 4 and the big red "activate" is gone. Changed updates to "notify me". I guess I'll reply again if the popup kills me again. Just thought I'd let this issue be known.

Thanks for the feedback.

I don't think that Updates were the problem, as the renewal popup is different and isolated from 'Program' updates. I have had Program Updates set to Manual for some considerable time and that doesn't stop the Renewal notification popup.
You could consider using Silent Mode when running games - Settings > General > Notifications - Use silent mode.
This does mean silent, no alerts, no notifications, no interaction, so I personally recommend using whilst gaming only. Outside of gaming, ads may well be a pain, that is the cost of free (I just ignore them) and as Asyn said the paid versions have options to disable ads/promotions.

Maybe the info was still in temp windows memory or in browser history?

When all else fails, reboot.

I'm a gamer, silent mode is the only mode I use.
It was the failing update that causing the issue. It stopped when I finally got it to update and looks like it popped up every time the update failed.
I had to restart and use task manager to stop all "nonessential" programs to get it to update though.

Side note, silent mode isn't optimised for gaming, check out DND mode.
