Title: How to Stop Telling Users to Reboot?
Post by: KDibble on May 26, 2020, 07:33:53 PM
The old Avast Business Endpoint Protection Plus did not tell users their software had been updated and they should reboot to apply updates, ever. Instead, the system simply applied the updates either without rebooting or on the next reboot, silently. The only time an end user saw a message from Avast was when it detected something. That was something I loved about the old Avast--and one of the reasons I used to give when recommending the product to others.

With Avast Business Pro people are constantly being messaged to reboot. This is more like the behavior of Free AVG than what I have come to expect from Avast. Our help desk keeps having to answer questions from users who, correctly, are very concerned that these kinds of messages may be bogus and dangerous.

In the Avast Business Pro On-Premise Console I can't find any way to stop these messages except, perhaps, to click the "Silent Mode" checkbox. I think if I do that then I, as administrator, would no longer receive email alerts. I also think that it would stop detection pop-ups for end users.

How can I make Avast Business Pro stop telling users about updates and reboots, and only tell them about malware detections, without also stopping my email alerts from the Console?

Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately you can't. I've reached out to support on this several times over the past. The versions that allow the same levels of control as EPP and SOA are targeted to MSP's and unavailable to regular business.

Hmmm.. Do you know if there's an Avast management module available for ConnectWise/Labtech?

Thanks.

ConnectWise plugin is in an early beta version.

So let me get this straight:

Avast used to provide its paying business customers a full-featured console that provided daily emailed reports with enough information on most detections that there was no need to log into the console to find out about them, and centrally-controlled endpoints that did a great job of keeping themselves up to date without pestering users and training them to ignore messages from Avast.

Then they released a brain-dead new console that doesn't do any of that.

Then they forced Windows 7 users to stop using the old, full-featured system because it no longer gets detection updates.

And they flat-out refused to re-introduce those good features into the paid (and, may I say, very well paid), business console because they apparently think they can make more money by only making those features available through MSPs.

And then they don't HAVE a version available for one of the most popular and commonly-used MSP systems, and may not have for nobody knows how long.

And there's a chorus of fanbois shaming people who don't immediately "upgrade" (in this case, it's actually a downgrade) to the latest and greatest version of ANYTHING for exactly these kinds of reasons.

Have I got that right? Is there anything I missed?

I can no longer recommend this system to anyone, and I will be looking for alternatives when my current licenses expire.

*sigh*

In the last 6 months, AVAST has improved a lot the reports funtionality: adding new reports, new style, the scheduled options (see picture), PDF creation, CSV export...

Unfortunaly, this new features are only availeble on Cloud console, not on On-Premise version.

What features?

I have the on-premise console. I don't want a cloud-based system, because the system and the software have to fully function even when the cloud is not available.

So my system doesn't have those reports.

The other feature is the capability to configure the endpoints so the only messages they display to end users are detection notifications. I don't want them constantly reminded of things such as the software has received an update that will be applied when they reboot, or that they have connected to the domain (they connect to the domain every day; why should Avast think it needs to tell them that?). The only effect that has is to train end users to ignore messages from Avast, and we certainly don't want to do that.

I want to be able to keep the ENDPOINTS in "silent mode" except for detection alerts, but I want the console to continue to send me detection and other kinds of alerts. As I understand it, the "silent mode" option in the on-premise console applies to EVERYTHING. That's not acceptable.

I would actually like to have a ConnectWise MSP plugin for Avast, because that solves the problem of keeping mobile devices updated, and enabling those devices to send detection information to the plugin, which can then alert me, without having to require all mobile devices to use an "always on" VPN to stay on the network. I have direct control over my MSP solution, something I would never have over avast's cloud.

@Kdibble... I think you nailed there. This is the poorest excuse for the old Enterprise Management replacement that anyone could come up with. To add to your list... lack of proper information about anything going on in regards to Scanning and Quarantined actions. I have scans that say "One file was unable to be scanned." What file? Why? nope... try information link? is that a joke? "Files might be locked, password protected or in use."... the answer is to dig through the text logs on the device. When scanning a file fails... we NEED to know why... when an email can't be moved to virus chest... why? There's 10 square miles of white space on all of the pages in the console but I have to click like I'm playing a video game two or three times on each computer just to see if things are working as expected on the systems.

I have also stopped recommending AVAST to anyone... I used to swear by it... even the free version for home use. No more. I have the next 2 years to figure out what product I'll be switching to.
