Title: Windows Firewall
Post by: Asyn on May 28, 2020, 09:07:39 AM
Why you shouldn't just use Windows Firewall: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfaRLUZK8No

Turn Off Windows Firewall and use something else. This video demonstrates with a trojan backdoor malware test, why you shouldn't use Windows Defender Firewall, even though it comes with Microsoft Windows 10 and isn't necessarily bad.

This video shouldn't be misinterpreted as advice not to use any firewall especially if you're using a laptop and connecting to random Wifi networks. Also, since everyone is asking why I ran the sample in a Win 7 environment (yes, this happens the same way in Windows 8/10). The purpose here isn't to bash Windows Firewall. It is a demonstration of the problem with a security model relying on the firewall on the same system the malware is executing from a cybersecurity perspective with real backdoor example.

Quite interesting, thanks Asyn

I would be curious to know if the same result would occur if Windows Firewall Control (with it's advanced settings) was added to the equation.

In any case, I'm very confident with the Firewall (and its advanced settings) in Avast Premium. ;)

So if you use Avast Free + Windows 10 Firewall you are not safe enough in normal use of a PC?

In these cases does Avast Free not intervene?

Avast Free does not have a Firewall Component. Avast Free is an Anti Virus, :)

Will there be a free Avast firewall sooner or later?

There hasn't been in over 16 years of using Avast free.

Somehow I can't see it, add a firewall to avast free and you take a lot away from purchasing Avast Premium.

There's nothing wrong with the firewall that's part of Windows 10.

I'd rather use the firewall that's already part of Windows.

Imo the default Windows Firewall, and a "lite" Avast Firewall are both bad ideas.

For many, many years I used Outpost Firewall Pro on a lifetime (that word again) license until they were bought out by a security company (no names) who offered a free years license by way of compensation.  But I didn't really want that as I was happy with Avast Free ;)

Long story short I couldn't use the old version I had on my win10 laptop, so I just used the Windows firewall.  The first thing I noticed was a lack of tweaking/maintenance required with the windows firewall.

I also used Outpost Pro Firewall until they stopped support(Updating).
When I use Windows Firewall I supplement it with Windows Firewall Control (WFC) which does allow for Tweaking.

Windows Firewall Control is indeed a good ( free ) supplement to the Windows Firewall.
