Title: After Uninstall, Avast No Longer Shows Up As Installed But Is Still Running
Post by: Scott_0101 on May 30, 2020, 01:30:52 AM
I am using Avast free 20.3.2405 (build 20.3.5200.575) on Windows 10. I just had a problem where I got a pop-up message from Avast saying that it had detected a trojan and moved it to the virus chest. I could not get the pop-up to go away however. After numerous attempts (and regardless of whatever I tried with Avast), including setting it to silent mode, the pop-up kept reappearing.

I finally decided that the only way I could get the pop-up to disappear was to uninstall Avast and reinstall it. I uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller which is my go-to uninstall program and it confirmed that I had deleted all of the registry keys and files and that the uninstall was complete. I then re-booted the system to make sure that the uninstall had been completed.

Upon rebooting, I discovered that Avast was still on my system and functioning normally. I had done nothing to reinstall it. Furthermore, it now no longer shows up on either my Revo list of installed programs or in the Windows 10 list of installed programs. Can someone tell me first, why the pop-up problem occurred and now why Avast is still on my system after uninstall and now with no way of uninstalling it? I don't like having a program running on my computer that doesn't show up on my installed programs list.

Thanks for any feedback.

Without any information on what the pop-up was (screenshot of alert) no one can say why.

As for it still occurring after switching to silent mode, did you reboot after changing the setting ?
Whilst I don't know if this is required for the setting to take effect.

There have been some posts recently seeking for alert windows to be allowed even from silent mode.  I don't know if any decision was made by Avast to change that.  Personally I'm against that (I guess you are also) as what the hell is the point of silent mode if exceptions are being made.

What element are you saying is running or rather how do you know Avast is still on your system ?
The only thing I can think of is perhaps Avast Secure Browser, but that isn't an integral part of the Avast Antivirus.

Thanks for the responses. The first screenshot below shows the popup that I couldn't get rid of. Every time I closed it, it would re-open. After doing the apparent uninstall and reboot, the popup no longer appeared. On the other hand, Avast should have been completely uninstalled at that point so one would not have expected the popup to keep showing at that time (after re-boot) anyway.

The second screenshot shows Avast running normally even though it no longer shows up in the installed program list. All features of it operate normally. The Avast logo is also showing in the tray (although my screenshot doesn't show my tray icons). I have downloaded Avastclear.exe but haven't had the opportunity to run it yet since it requires safe mode. I am assuming that running that program then re-installing Avast will solve the problem of it not showing up in my installed programs list.

Are you familiar with the file named in the Alert ?

Unfortunately you didn't click the 'See details' option so I can't see what process/function/location that has triggered the Alert.
Whilst that isn't the point if as you say you uninstalled Avast.  However, whatever is triggering this alert would still be present even after Avast is successfully removed.

The second image is the Smart Scan and that is scheduled to run a scan periodically, unless you opted out of that scan.

When you installed Avast did you install it in the default location  ?

You can try the link given by Pondus to run the Uninstall Utility.  Personally I wouldn't use Revo to uninstall a security based program (avast could try to protect against removal), but the regular control panel uninstall and or a dedicated uninstall program from the company.

Personally I've always used Revo even if I advise beginners to use the tool, because the tool tends to forget to delete some files if we don't take care(ex:license file,overseer,...).
On the other hand to prevent the risk that avast protects itself against removal, I disable (knowingly) the self-defense.No need to go into safe mode like this, ... but I repeat, I do so at my own risk.  ;)
nb:disable self-defense: maybe that's why the uninstall didn't work for our friend.
