Title: HDD use at 100% by Avast Service process without scan or update
Post by: kjellschwaericke on May 31, 2020, 02:03:21 AM
Ive had this problem for months, I uninstalled Avast Driver Updater to make sure thats not it and disabled any automatic updates, scans etc that i could find in the Avast Premium Security settings, but still I randomly get an "Avast Service" process using 50% Disk (aka 100% of the HDD and 0% of the SSD) for about 10 minutes straight, completely ASDing any other program I am trying to use at the time, I think it mostly happens at 1:30 am but it might have happened at other times before I started paying attention to it.
So my guess is avast is trying to do a "sneaky" update even though I have put all updates on manual, but it isnt being sneaky at all so how the  ASD can I disable it?
THanks...

1. Download Avast Premium Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premium_security_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

Hi kjellschwaericke,

thank you for reporting, it would be great if you can try to catch that situation and generate xperf logs. This will help us to analyze the issue and fix it one for all. If you are willing to give it a try please follow this procedure how to install xperf and generate the logs when it happens the next time:

Thank you very much.

Ok so I had it yesterday at 20:30 instead of 1:30, failed to start the process in time because I had forgotten how to change folder in cmd and the whole laptop is basically in a coma, but cmd itself seemed to work so next time I should be able to catch it, if the xperf process doesnt need to use the HDD to start recording..

Got it again at 3:27ish, instantly tried to start cmd and look up the bookmarked cmd command, but the windows bar wouldnt even open for 10 minutes straight and the bookmarked tab didnt load, while "Avast Service" was busy doing god knows what to my HDD, then it barely worked after like 10-15 minutes while "Avast Antivirus Installer" was hogging the HDD, then some windows telemetry service, but once I could start cmd as administrator it was already over...
I might need to keep the CMD window in administrator mode open with the command already ready to go because its hard to do anything when nothing that needs to load ANYTHING doesnt react at all...
