Title: RECAPTCHAs Back Again?
Post by: alanb on June 04, 2020, 07:56:44 PM
I logged in today (as per usual) and noticed the login screen had been changed - OK, no problem there.

I was then greeted with a RECAPTCHA to solve.  Has there been a policy change on this forum?

I haven't experienced it, but then again it is rare that I log out.

I actually had to do a system restart, whilst testing something else (avast Backup and Restore settings, that some have reported failing when trying to restore).

When I started Firefox and my open Tabs, I had to Login to the forum and I didn't get a Recaptcha.

Are you using some sort of VPN it may think is suspect ?

@CraigB
I know the reasoning, but I have been a forum member since 2005!  I'm well past my first 3 posts...

@DavidR
No VPN, no proxy, no hardware or software changes that should make any difference.

(And of course I had to solve another one to post this reply  >:( )

Very strange, I can't see anything related to your forum use that might/could trigger this.  In your info to the left of your post has that said 'Poster' for a while, seems strange for that post count ?

Do you actually log out when you leave the forum   or clear cookies, etc. ?

All I can suggest at present is do another quick reply, which will probably result in your third (and hopefully last) recaptcha interrogation.

Hi Alan, did you try the "Keep me signed in" option..!?

Dunno how long it has said 'Poster' - I don't really take any notice.

I do (and always have) cleared cookies.

Hi Asyn.

Yup.  Tried the "Keep me signed in" option.

I have just completed my ninth login - all with RECAPTCHAs :(

I've had enough now.  Shame after 15 years  >:(

I don't use the Keep me signed in option either and this isn't an issue for me.  If I restarted the browser and I have my tabs restored, I sign in if required (using my Firefox saved logons) and login.  No Recaptcha.

I did experience this when I logged on once at an another site and that was only the Yes I'm a human check box.  So I just wonder if something is considered suspect with your connection (which was why I mentioned the VPN question).

What is really strange is why this also goes beyond the forum anti-spam measure of the first 3 posts and the fact that your forum stats recognises your post count and aren't in the newbie category.  I can only think that this is something above and beyond the usual forum anti-spam measure.  What that might be is beyond me.

I've had the recaptcha appear twice so far, once yesterday and once today.

I only had to click on a few photos (traffic lights) which couldn't be much simpler.

Hi guys, meanwhile I tested it to the limit...

With and without:
- Cookies deletion
- "Keep me signed in" option
- VPN connection

...but still can't reproduce it here.

So, no idea why some get it and others don't. ???

Well aren't you the lucky one!

On all 12 occasions I've logged in I have had to solve a minimum of 7 torture sessions "puzzles".

EDIT: Thanks for your efforts, Asyn.  For the moment I've worked around it by whitelisting all Avast cookies.

That's strange also as I have made no provisions to 'whitelist' avast cookies in Firefox.  I have uMatrix and uBlock Origin, Disconnect and Privacy Badger add-ons with no issue.

I also used to have Cookie Monster, but that isn't compatible with the latest versions of Firefox.  I did use CookieMaster as a replacement for Cookie Monster, but that proved to be  more trouble than it was worth, so it sits disabled.

OK I have been checking again after I did a system restart.

When I opened up my fixed tab for the forums I got the logon screen as I expected, at the bottom of that screen is the small Recaptcha icon.

However I didn't require any further interrogation I was able to click the Continue button as my firefox password manager had filled the fields.  So it isn't the forum anti-spam measures that hitting you but the integration of the Google Recaptcha and the forum logon URL, I think.  Why is the $64,000 dollar question.

Try to change your IP address if possible (ex. restart your router or ISP terminal), might work...

Snap nothing seen other than what I reported in Reply #15, just seeing that ReCaptcha is monitoring, but no interrogation for me.

I also doubt that it's related to the browser, seems their algorithms aren't smart. ::)

Hard to say, I guess it thinks you are a bot not a human (but it usually just throws up a check box), where it knows I'm 'Certainly Bot' :)

Has your ISP changed it IPs or method of connection ?

No nothing changed. Is the issue forum related or Browser, any idea?

Well yes and no.

Yes, Forum - When I have to log in, I can see the fact that ReCaptcha is enabled on that page.
See image in Reply #14 https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=234675.msg1549226#msg1549226

No, Browser - I think that if it were directly browser related - I would have expected to see a much larger activity level about the problem.

I don't know if it might possibly be add-on related, HideMyAss style add-ons where it is trying to mask you.  I use uBlock Origin but have it disabled for the Forums. I also use uMatrix and google analytics I haven't allowed.  I also use Privacy Badger and Disconnect add-ons and both are enabled on the forums.

You could try running your browser with add-ons disabled and see if that makes any difference.

You bet I'll play around but still can't see why all of a sudden when I've changed nothing.
Well in any case it won't change my world, just one of those things that make go.... Mmmm.  8)

Whilst you may have changed nothing, if the validation on the forum changes, e.g. the possible introduction of the ReCaptcha check (and I don't know if and when this happened) could then come into conflict with browser security.

On the subject of browser security, have you also got the Avast Secure Browser if so you could try that also.

During my dozen-or-so attempts to avoid the "Google-test", I disabled uBlockOrigin and Firefox's tracking protection to no avail

@schmidthouse,
You (and I) may have changed nothing, but uBO (for example) filters are updated several times a day.  One of them may be "over-zealous" I guess...

However, see my previous post.

Seems so , that it doesn't matter, if you choose that option or not (see screenshots). And it's only under XP!?

when they run into this problem. I personally haven't experienced this at all.
