Hi all. Please welcome Avast 20.5.
We've packed it with a lot of new stuff:
- Introducing Remote Access Shield - Enjoy even stronger protection against hackers. This new feature lets you choose who can remotely access your computer and lets you block the rest. (Premium Security users only)
- Ransomware Shield is now free - We’re now offering this feature to Avast Free Antivirus users to maximize their ransomware protection
- Easier USB drive protection - We’ll now ask you to scan USB drives when you plug them into your computer. (You can also turn this off in your notification settings)
- Improved taskbar icon - There’s no need to keep your antivirus open during scans. You can now see your scan progress from the Avast taskbar icon
- Better botnet protection - Web Shield is even better about stopping malware from connecting to malicious servers
Things to note: - We are no longer releasing new versions of Internet Security and Pro. Every Pro/IS user updated to 20.5 version will end up on Premium Security to enjoy the full feature-set of paid version.
- Teaser for our dedicated forum users: We've added support for scanning Google QUIC protocol in Webshield, though it's enabled only for some users at the moment. We plan to full scale it in the upcoming version.
...and from about 110 other smaller or larger tasks, we pick here the fixes of:
- corner cases when Firewall was consuming too much CPU in correlation with VPS requests
- Cleanup install detection upon switching to x64 version (Congrats to Cleanup team and sorry when the app was being offered to you even if you had it already)
- bugs in protecting passwords stored in Firefox and Chrome that were installed after Avast AV
- some RescueDisk failures when being created on USB
- UI glitches for enabling/disabling shield in Protection section
How to install:
1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program
2. Or you can download and install files:
Online installers (recommended):
- Free: https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_FREE (https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_FREE)
- Premium Security (formerly Premier): https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_APR (https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_APR)
Offline installers:
- Free: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe)
- Premium Security (formerly Premier): http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_offline.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_offline.exe)
We hope you enjoy the new version!

What is the best way to configure Ransomware shield ?
-
I personally avoid Ransomware shield for this 2 reasons:
- It must be configured, each program you use must have exception and can slow down your PC, so it can cause more harm then good.
- You are not protected from HDD failure so in this scenario you lose your data anyway.
No one invented better solution than good BACKUP plan. I would rather see File shredder in Avast Free which have some usage (Still dont understand why is paid if there are many free alternatives).

I unchecked video, audio and image file types. I have backup for those. Archive files on my PC are mostly installers and portable programs, so I unchecked that too.

You clearly don't understand how Ransomware Shield works. User doesn't have to maintain the exclusion list. avast! team does that by utilizing their massive whitelist. They've been using it for years and it works superbly. Unlike Windows Defender which was using similar technique but was basically broken since its inception and it looked like its whitelist was non existent or non functional and they apparently got it under control with Windows 10 2004 update, somewhat. It still bitches over Crystal Disk Info tho.
Ransomware Shield is a really nice addition to avast! Free.

Now that the Ransomware Shield is included in the Avast Free version - Should the https://support.avast.com/en-nz/article/Antivirus-Ransomware-Shield-FAQ be updated (Inclusion in Avast Free) ?

This will now have fixed the problem, what were we talking about here?

Was it Avast's fault at all?
Thanks in advance for the answer.

I have used Avast for getting on for 20 years starting from version 4 with Windows 98SE. This is the best installation I have yet to experience having just updated Avast on 6 Windows 7(1), 8.1(1) and 10(4). All are working well and the extra work load imposed by AntiRansomware and other new features is not noticeable. Avast is astonishingly light on resources as adventures with the competition have shown me. :)

Is it advisable to add AppData and Downloads folders under Ransomware Shield protection ?

How confusing is this? I just received an Avast notification warning me that my primary folders (I think that is what I was told) are vulnerable to ransomware and that I should upgrade to the premium version. Really? Hmmmmmmmmmm. :o

One answer to this, please! (That's why I registered for this forum.)
I haven't dared to use two apps since Tuesday because of this.

anyone else notice avast is constantly hitting the network card sending and receiving data? when system is idle and nothing is open?
Normal when my system is idle and nothing is open nothing is hitting network card.
Less this abnormal network activity on my card is due to dish network update again, bunch time over the year and update to hopper system would cause constant send receive hits on my network card if it hopper was connected to wifi.
-
I installed the latest version of avast free and to my surprise it doesn't freeze the applications as it did but certain applications are misbehaving and certain applications work fine. For example soon as I load into windows I have software called NZXT cam that controls my fans and that stops loading and will not open as it requires the internet, and after that stops loading if I click on the Edge browser it does not load anything even though I have a stable internet connection and shutdown takes a while, removing avast free fixes issues. Oher applications behave strangely to.

Probably related to stream updates, they get checked every few minutes.
-
What a nice surprise, that ransomware shield ! Actually it protects files in both partitions of my PC. ( xp + 7)
Thanks Avast.

Thanks for the update Avast, everything is running very smooth as a (https://i.imgur.com/LK91Bde.gif)

Avast Premium Security + VPN - latest update installed
Is notepad supposed to open automatically when opening Bank Mode in Secure Browser?
-
Hi,
For years I'm a user of your excellent free software.
But in the last version something seems to have gone wrong : every few minutes I get a notification 'External drive connected',
showing the ID details of my main internal boot-and-system drive (a Crucial 512 MB ssd).
I could click 'stop offering to scan external drives', but that is not really what I want.
Platform : Win 10 rel 2004. Avast version : 20.5.2415 - build 20.5.5415.561
Any suggestion how to resolve this ?
-
Repair Avast:
1. Avast GUI -> Settings -> Troubleshooting
2. Click on 'REPAIR APP'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

@Asyn :
Thanks for the suggestion - I tried this but still the same result - notification keeps coming
UPDATE :
It seems to be an issue caused by the WIN 10 update (which I got at about the same time as the avast update).
Got resolved by tagging the SATA bus involved as 'internal' in the registry...

Hi, I got this update and now I can't use Zoom conferences!
This needs to be fixed.
I get these blocks immediately after logging into my company's Zoom web portal.
I had to disable all shields in order to use Zoom.

why is avast shield blocking thunderbird from receiving/send emails using my google account? as soon as I disable the shields it works fine in thunderbird, soon as enable it it stops work
I have not changed anything in thunderbird and as of today avast is blocking it, it not saying it blocking it but obviously it blocking it cause soon as turn the shield off it works
I forced a definition update and seem to be working again.
-
This new version has been causing many failures in Thunderbird trying to read emails (timeout problems, connection problems). Turn off the mail shield and there are no troubles. After years running this setup, this is the first time I have experienced this issue.
I started a separate thread for the problem.

Avast Premium Security. Firewall not working on starting computer. Asked at computer shop who recommended I reinstall programme. I uninstalled previous version and installed new version. Avast wanted new subscription even though I have a subscription expiring 5 July 2021 and have the activation code. Help, please. I'm too old for such problems!

What does your Avast Tray icon (right click) show for the Registration Information (image 1 below) ?
If it isn't showing anything (or need to register) connect that installation to your my.avast.com account (same logon as you used to connect to the forum, image 2 below) you should be able to assign the license.
If you are still logged on to the forums when you do this it may connect automatically.

I'm having an issue with remote access shield. I am remotely connected to my office computer but every few minutes I get a pop-up notification that an incoming connection was blocked. Here are some of the URLs
rdp://45.141.87.250/BruteForce
rdp://52.191.162.141/Blacklist
rdp://13.95.156.233/Blacklist
rdp://52.168.10.65/Blacklist
Would it be safe to check out these IP addresses to see what they are?
I closed about 20 of these pop ups when I first connected to my office computer
Another thing I noticed is that I can't open Outlook. I tried doing a repair on it but it still won't open.

Hi all. Please welcome Avast 20.5.
...
We hope you enjoy the new version!
AVAST Team
Problem. This latest version, Avast Free Antivirus (20.5.2415 (build 20.5.5410.561)), now prevents me from saving my work in Corel PhotoPaint 2017. It tells me that corelPP.exe is trying to modify my protected folder (Huh? What? - no it isn't - its just saving to my Documents\graphics work folder like always, like I tell it to). When I manually override to allow the save to occur, actually the saved file never appears in my work folder. The latest version of Avast seems to have destroyed it. No issues with saving in IrfanView however, even though it's saving the same photo with the same edit to the same folder. And there were no such problems with the previous version of Avast, 24 hrs ago.
Assuming that this is a bug, and if it can't be fixed, then I'll have to uninstall it if I'm going to keep working on my stuff.
Thanks though -- this is the first problem I've ever had with Avast. So you're doing good.

Typical more Avast crap.
I have to enter the code every time I open Avast can't it remember any effing settings?
Easier USB drive protection - We’ll now ask you to scan USB drives when you plug them into your computer. (You can also turn this off in your notification settings)
More Avast crap. I can't connect to my other computer everything has need checked file and printer sharing are set.
I have to put files on a flash drive to copy them over 20 time a day.
I have loads of flash drives there is 1 2GB I use all the time.
Now Avast popup scan drive they is nothing that wants scanning.
(You can also turn this off in your notification settings)
As I've said before Avast Premium Security 20.5.2415 (build 20.5.5410.561)
For an application for any settings its total crap, menu search for text notification shows nothing.
Every application I build I have an help file you can search for anything.
Avast need the same help file.
notification on the top shows sweet FA
You tell me where notification is that you talk about?
-
You can disable USB thumb drive notifications from
Settings => General => Notifications => Offer to scan external drives
IIRC we also have a link to this settings (or "Click-to-disable" link) on notification toaster
-

I found that setting - Offer to scan external drives which isn't selected as I disabled it.
It searched for Notifications.
If I search for CyberScan which is the new DeepScan it shows nothing.
As I've said what is the point in have text search when you know the item is there but a search shows nothing. You shouldn't have to select a section to search and good help file will search all parts to find the text searched for.
For an application the help is total garbage for what I've paying for this crap. That is another annoying thing with this company and crap PAYPAL that won't sort the stupid price.
I've asked about subscriptions on here before with no useful reply.
I could make a new thread but it would probably be added to an existing subscriptions thread.
There is a lot of text to post.
As I've said I have to enter the code every time I open Avast up, can't is remember anything!!!!!

Hi, could you post a screenshot, I've never heard of CyberScan or DeepScan in Avast. ???

Hello.
Yes, the anti-spam component has been removed.

Hello.
Yes, the anti-spam component has been removed.
You must confuse something else, Anti-Spam component is still there.
You can access Avast UI -> Privacy -> Anti-Spam.
-
Hello.
I contacted Avast support and they confirmed that it has been removed.
You need to do a clean install of Avast Premium Security 20.5.2415 (build 20.5.5410.584) and you will see it is missing!
Also your image is the beta version.
I include the Avast Support reply below:
"We’re sorry this update left you frustrated. We strive to provide the best protection possible, and our research and comprehensive review of the feature showed that Anti-Spam wasn’t offering enough value to our customers. And given that email providers nowadays provide strong embedded anti-spam filters, we decided to focus our development efforts on adding value in other areas. Recently we introduced new features like Remote Access Shield, Password Protection, improved botnet protection, etc. We think these new features — along with ongoing improvements to our other many features — provide advanced protection for our customers."

Thanks for the info, then it's not a good thing as official website still offers Anti-spam as premium feature.
In most cases there is no major difference with beta and stable build in terms of features, btw. If there is any stated, I avoid posting them here. :)

Thanks Stephen1066 for the detailed update.
I noticed however there is a component called Mail Shield when installing the latest version - not too sure if you noticed. Outgoing emails from outlook carry the Avast signature too. I guess Avast must have integrated Mail Shield and not included it as a component in Avast.

Now I have canceled my further licence subscriptionn to your produckt, because you never fixed the error wirh the icarus permissionn requests.
